News is saying there is a high Nitrate alert for the next couple weeks for our tap water. We have a filter but it does not filter the nitrate level. I know rabbits are pretty sensitive to things and was wondering. Should I switch to bottled water for our bun until they fix the issue?

This talks about the effects of nitrates. They talk about livestock, but not rabbits in particular. Horses, however, are susceptible because they have a large cecum so my guess is that it would be similar in rabbits.

I don’t know how high your levels are, but I would use bottled water for the rabbits for now just to be safe.

I’d second LBJ. While I don’t know anything specific about the topic the fact that rabbits are so much smaller will magnify any possible effects. If you live anywhere near a wine making store then you can get large quantities of “bottled” water at very little expense. Ours sells ten litres and more for two dollars and fifty cents. Just something that can be handy to know. And this water is just cleaned , it doesn’t have added salt like many of the bottled waters you get in the grocery stores do.

3rd vote for bottled water. Better safe than sorry.

Definitely bottled water for the bun
