It’s Rabbit Awareness Week. Be aware, we are adorable. This message brought to you by Bindi Loo.

I thought we could all share some stories on how you have raised awareness about rabbits in the past. What do you do to help rabbits? Or just post some pics!

It’s their week! Let’s celebrate them!

Ahh Bindi is so cute! This isn’t anything big but I took my rabbits to the vet once and a lady saw them and thought they were so cute and started to ask me where I got them and that she was going to get one. I informed her of the reality of owning a rabbit. I actually tried to deter her from getting one. She seemed to be the type that just wanted one because it was cute not thinking of the actual care of them. Any time someone sees my rabbits or hears I have them and are interested in them I try to answer their questions as honestly as possible. I tell them to do their research before getting one. I can relate though it is really hard to resist a cute bunny!

I’d never heard of Rabbit awareness week before. Whenever people ask about my bun I answer their questions, but other then that I can’t recall anything big I have done to inform people. I’ll have to do so this week.

              Hey Bindi

My vet has free health check ups for bunnies throughout the month of may, and free evenings where bunny owners can go and get info on bunny care throughout awareness week. They also give away loads of freebies, last year we got food samples, a keyring, loads of leaflets and treats!

I know what you’re thinking; yes, my vet is the best.

How lucky are you guys… BRAGGING to everyone about your bunny’s! SOOO jealous! I still can’t believe I am the ONLY BB member who can’t – SAD face!

BUT I can say that I have offered my BB knowledge to a friends friend that has a bunny AND talked someone OUT of getting a bunny! Does that count?

AND my/Henry’s vet is the BEST too Tessie – HAPPY face!

Do you know when we buy his food we NEVER say bunny food as we are looking and deciding…… We say ‘Henry’ food! Lol…

Most of my bunny awareness raising takes place at the vet too. People comment how cute he is (since it’s usually Bindi!) and are so fascinated that they can be easily litter trained, can be spayed/neutered, etc.

I also like to raise awareness about companies that test on animals.

Lets see, aside from boring anyone who asks my bunnies with tons of pics as if they were my human babies, whenever we go to the pet supply stores, I hang out by the rabbit “cages” and bunny food while hubby plays with the cats up for adoption and the reptiles. Invariably, someone who just got a bunny will see me standing there with my cart full of bunny litter and ask me if I have a bunny. Door open to answer questions and help at least one bunny have a better life!

I also have no problem butting in when I hear a store employee push pellets with all the extra junk in them, hamster balls for someone to put a bunny in, tiny “rabbit” cages, etc. Potentially rude to jump in and stear the customer toward quality pellets and hay and xpens? Yep, but not going to stand back and have a bunny fed junk, stuck in a 2×2 cage, and put in a hamster ball!

LOL Hazel! Yes Cottontail – but I’m NOT happy with her at the moment (LOL!) cause she ran off and met up with MB! Seriously, if she steals MY Gus…. ha ha ha ha ha!
BUT I have to be honest, I did forget about CT (naughty me) cause she is such a natural with Pete it is so easy to forget. I wish I was half the bunny mum that CT is! I’m only a good mum THANKS to you guys and I’m sure Henry still thinks I could do much better….. HUH? Dam bunny! Lol!

Cheer’s to you Cottontail! And thank you for the reminder Hazel – it’s true! It does make it SO much better when you know your not the only one. BIG smile! PS CT – touch Gus (unless your hugging him for ME) and I WON’T be happy! Hahahaha……

You have NO idea how much I would have loved seeing/meeting you in the bunny section JR!!! The money I would have saved on the rubbish I bought, ridiculous!!! I still shudder when I think back to when I first bought Henry home before I met you guys on BB! Lets say it’s was GREAT that I found and met BB sooner rather than later!

What horrifies me living in the bunny banned state – I’m aware a lot of people own bunnies and the majority don’t get vet care out of fear. OR are eating the same crap food I fed Henry as a baby and even worse are stuck outside living in hutches – what I’d do to scream and yell ‘this is not how you own and care for a bunny’!!! Thank goodness I had the sense to find you guys – I’m sure Henry thanks you every day!

I am never afraid to tell anyone about all the woes that come w/ bunnies. In fact when we got Pumpkin a lot of my friends were like “ooh you got another bunny??? didn’t Boston destroy everything?” haha yes, yes she did…..

I usually end up trying to talk people out of it if they don’t seem serious about the care or only want one b/c they are “cute/easy.” I let everyone know about the work and the vet bills!!

A friend of mine wanted to get a rabbit, so he got the whole conversation how many problems a bunny can cause, what you need to do to make them comfortable, bla bla bla… I thought I’d discouraged him, but he did end up getting the cutest lady bun. She’s very well taken care of, and whenever he has a question he asks me.

Asides from that, I basically talk about Chester to anyone that wants to listen. And I use the cuteness as an entryway to explain how bunnies have personalities and all that! A lot of my friends are better informed about bunnies now. I actually had a friend that, when she was living in town, would take an extra dose of allergy medication so she could come and play with him for a bit

As I’m new to the area no one knows me but have seen me carrying a big bag of hay and sawdust on my back, I didn’t have anyone to talk to about rabbits so when I was up at the pet shop I gave them some money to help with the adoption service.

Speaking of personalities and such, my mom is here for the weekend. She’s met Pumpkin a couple times but not Shamrock. She’s in awe of how well they get along and of their funny nuiances. Like they’ll be all chilled out on the couch and suddenly out of no where they need to drink, and then they lay down somewhere else. And how they follow me and Jared around. I think “Grandma” is becoming a bit smitten. It doesn’t help that the first thing Shamrock did when he met her was run up and beg for food!!! haha
