› Forum › THE LOUNGE › Vibes needed for Moxie
For the past few days/almost a week she has not been acting quite right. She hasn’t been wanting to come out a lot, but I just assumed that her medicine was making her feel a little sick. But today I noticed she was definitely not acting like her self. She hasn’t eaten or drank anything today. It’s 4:30 PM. She also has not wanted to come out of her home base willingly today. I had to physically take her out of it, and lock the door so she wouldn’t go back in. But she just layed down by the wall, not wanting people to touch her. When normally she wants to be touching somebody at all times, and is always underfoot.
The vets are not open today. And the nearest emergency vet is like 2 hours away. Plus my mother is at work and has the money and the car. She told me that first thing in the morning we would bring her and my mom would pay in if she hasn’t improved. What should I do??? Should I try and mash up some pellets mixed with water and try to syringe feed her? Should I syringe feed her some veggies in the blender? Should I syringe feed her water? How much and how often? I’m super stressed and nervous! All she has eaten today was a tiny piece of banana and I had to syringe her meds into her so I used a little banana baby food. I think she pooped this morning though. I’m going to check again if she has pooped recently, I cleaned out her pan a few hours ago.
But yeah, We could really use some vibes for her to eat!
{{{{{{Moxie}}}}}}
The vet told us baby food and he said mushed up pineapple/pineapple puree is good. I would start syringing her as soon as you can, especially fluids. I think apple juice is OK too, if she likes it better. Also maybe some light tummy rubs to help keep her tummy going. ((((Vibes for moxie and mommy))))
Oh No!!! Moxie start eating! So sorry to hear she’s so down and out!!! You MUST keep us posted. Anything you can possibly get into her has to be better than nothing. We’re here for you!
{{{ VIBES }}}
I’d get some food in her, even if it’s just mush. I know when Pete has lowered his appetite before I just went ahead and gave him “treats” like grape-juice-CC, fresh hand-fed hay, cilantro, carrot tops, etc.. anything he thinks he’s getting special just to make sure there is something in his belly. He wasn’t much for pumpkin, but I have a jar of banana baby food just for him! I hope something peaks her appetite!
((((Moxie)))) keep us updated!!!
So sorry to hear Moxie is unwell. Have you tried Simethicone? That’s what we give Oscar when his tummy is upset and it works every time. But I know Moxie is already on different meds, so I’m not sure if that would be problematic. You did the right thing locking her out of her cage, that’s what I always do. Give her a nudge once in a while to get her moving. Also, try tummy massages. I put Oscar on my lap, holding his chest/front feet with my left hand so that he leans back against my stomach, and massage him with my right hand. Pretty much like the picture JR posted in the “Bunny Burrito” thread. Don’t apply too much pressure, and if you hit a spot that makes a gurgling noise, keep massaging there.
Sending lots of healing vibes for Moxie!
I used our blender and made a “smoothie” for Moxie. It was some leafy greens, water, and banana all blended up. I think I got her to eat about 2 teaspoons of it.
Now this is the strange part, Moxie got worse, she looked very sickly, just laying around. And it broke my heart when all she felt like doing was resting her head on my leg so I could pat her. She was laying there, very sick looking when she peed. She peed while she was laying down, on my bed, right next to me. A few minutes later she got up and started playing with her toys. She ate 4-5 lettuce leafs, and looked much better.
I’m very glad she looks to be doing better, but why would she look better and start acting slightly more normal after she peed? The color of the urine seemed normal, but I was thinking she might have a Urinary Tract Infection or a Blockage. Any thoughts? I’ll have the vets find out for sure tomorrow though…
MM- here’s my theory on the pee.
Have you ever had such a sore/upset stomach that you didn’t realize or (more likely) didn’t care that your bladder felt like it was about to explode it was so full? Sometimes when you’re in abdominal discomfort it’s hard to personally distinguish what is aggravating what, and therefore things that you KNOW are a problem don’t seem as important as the current condition because in your brain they are different… when they are actually working against each other. Well, when either your brain or your body gives in and the bladder is emptied, the soreness/discomfort decreases quite a bit; sometimes it even relieves nausea to a degree. I hope that makes sense… Kind of along the lines of feeling better after you throw-up, I guess..? Anyway, it’s just a theory.
I hope she continues to feel better, even if that means some piddling here and there!
{{{ VIBES }}}
Ohh poor Moxie (((Moxie))) Please do feel better.. Hows Moxie doing now?
Playing is a good sign, but I agree with the others that you need to get something into her. It looks like she will eat greens on her own so I would push those if nothing else.
Poor Moxie, I hope she feels better. I don’t think simethicone can hurt, if you haven’t tried it yet.
(((Vibes))) for Moxie! I hope Moxie perks up soon! Poor baby, keep us updated.
(((vibes))) Hope the vet goes well.
I hurts me in my heart whenever I come across a post which tells that someone’s bunny is not well. Most of the times I dont have anything to say and I leave after reading.. I really hope the vet can tell what exactly is wrong so that you can take care of it. My good wishes are with Moxie and you. I have to say, people here are caring bunny parents with big hearts.
(((((((Moxie))))))
How is she doing now?
Wondering the same thing bam. How’s Moxie?
She started getting better, eating a little pellets and hay and a few lettuce leafs. I gave her her last dose of baytril today, and shortly after that she started just wanting to rest again. I think it’s upsetting her stomach. The vets have no open spots until tomorrow, so I guess that’s just when I’m going to have to take her in. (Unless of course she starts looking very sick again, then it’s either emergency vets or *Make room for my baby if you know what’s good for you*)
I’ve canceled everything for today so I can monitor her, No CPR and babysitting certification, no sleep over at my friend’s, and no get together thing me and some friends always do on Tuesday. I don’t mind, Life’s been very stressful lately and I am glad for the break to just stay at home and spend time with Moxie.
Does anybody have any suggestions for me to ask the vets tomorrow? And I don’t think her other illness is cleared up, and I don’t know what they are going to say/prescribe her. I just hope everything goes well.
I’m going to get some sort of juice to add to her water to try and get her to drink more, that’s the only thing I’m very worried about. I don’t even think she has drank 2 ounces in the past 12-24 hours. I might syringe water into her and really wet her veggies.
Ahh I hope Moxie gets better. Usagi has a UTI our vet said to syringe feed him water. Have you given her water that way? I wish I could be of more help. Let us know how her appointment goes.
((((( Healing vibes for Moxie )))))
I am not very successful in syringe feeding her water, she will just let it dribble out. All she has really drank today was about 1/8 a cup of a pineapple juice/water mix. I was able to get her to eat a little bit of pellets (not much at all, a tablespoon max) by dipping them in pineapple juice so they smelled good to her she also ate about a tablespoon of frozen banana flavored babyfood. She’s been nibbling on hay. I’m going to attempt to syringe feed her some water and food later.
And thanks for all the vibes everybody.
I just remembered she drank a little regular water early this morning.
Best of luck at the vet. ((((((Feel Better Moxie))))))
I got Moxie to drink some water by mixing a little pineapple juice into it. She ate a big bowl of greens tonight and a little bit of pellets.
Yay for eating! ((((More vibes for our Moxie))))
Do let us know what the vet says.
Will do LEL!
Is there anything specific I should ask them to do?
Thanks.
We went to the vets. They still aren’t sure what’s wrong, uhg! They flea treated her and gave her medicine for tape worms.
The vet said her lungs were very clear, so it was really only a nasal/sinus thing now. She’s also lost a few ounces.
They said they can’t do a culture for another week because her meds ended yesterday, and we would get false readings. They gave us a price quote for what it would be. $400 for a culture and like a lung rinse or something, I forget what it’s called at the moment. And that doesn’t include meds. I’m worried about the whole procedure though, and am trying to decide what to do…
A tracheal wash perhaps?? Wow! Sounds major and maybe it’s a good thing you have to wait a little bit, since you can see if she comes around now that she’s off the meds. No clue and no words of advice. Just sorry you’re going through this and hoping she comes along. I guess my only thinking, when vets start talking about all this work is “What might it show? can we just treat for that w/o the whole work-up and see what happens? Is there a chance it would even show anything treatable?”
Sometimes they want to do tests which could then lead to something you aren’t going to treat for anyway, so you want to make sure it’s for a good reason. But that’s just me. Others want anything and everything done and they want to know WHAT it is that’s exactly happening, even if it isn’t going to be anything you can treat. Does this make sense??
Yes I think that’s what it was called.
I think it would be helpful to have the culture done, so we could stop guessing and know what it is and how to treat it. The vet suggested other illnesses like staff infection. The vet noticed (to my horror) a few flea eggs in her fur. She suggested she might have an allergic reaction to that. So I don’t really know what to do. $400 dollars is a lot of money to just hand out, and a lot of stress on Moxie. I don’t want to do it unless it is worth it. If Moxie stays safe and they find out the problem and how to fix it, I think it’s worth it.
On a side note, I changed vets and I LOVE this new vet. The other vet was in there for like 20 seconds, feeling her over and then just leaving without really explaining anything to us, allowing the nurse to explain everything. (maybe that’s just how guy vets are?) This new vet was a woman who was so friendly, explained all of our options, didn’t try to pressure us into anything she didn’t need, showed lots of empathy, seemed very knowledgeable and kept complimenting on how pretty Moxie was.
How stressful the test will be is important. Too much stress can be more harmful as what ever they think they will find. So I would ask a lot of questions about that. It’s a fine line between this will benefit my bunny and this will hurt my bunny.
For example, when Porky was sick recently, I said yes to the x-ray that he just needed to sit in loaf position for them to take, b/c even though there was some stress involved in being on a weird table the x-ray was important and all he had to do was sit still in a way he is normally comfortable in. However, I said no to the x-ray that they would have to anesthetize him for, b/c I did feel he was up for that in his weak state.
Moxie, as for fleas….we have always battled fleas with our cats. But they can have reactions besides just itching. One pulls fur from his tail, one scratches her ears til they bleed and get scabby. Sometimes they get edgy or eat a lot or are just blah. I can see how Moxie may be reacting negatively to the fleas. It would be great of it was something so simple. Also, for some reason, fleas like Obie. He gets kinda blah if they get bad too. He’s hard to tell until its bad though. Plus Moxie has such lovely fur, perfect for fleas.
I agree with others that the stress of a test should be taken into consideration. Plus, will it really tell them more than what the culture would anyway? Would what they find change how they will treat it? It doesn’t always change things.
Good luck to you and Moxie bun. I hope she perks up quickly!
Just seeing this thread MM. So sorry you are going through this with Moxie! Poor baby! To chime in on the food thing, when our last rabbit sick we syringe fed a lot of Pumpkin baby food–she seemed to like it. You’ve already gotten lots of other great advice, but I just wanted to send some vibes and let you know we’re thinking about you!
(((((((((((Moxie)))))))))))))
Fleas and possibly tape worms would sure explain her feeling bad. Hope that’s what it is, especially now that she’s been treated. It’s so hard watching a bunny feel bad and feeling helpless when all we want is to fix everything for our babies.
I am reading this and have no advice to give. I agree with JackRabbit. Its hard knowing the bunny babies arent well. I have always wished they could speak only when they are not unwell and explain whats exactly bothering them. Another of my childish fantasies.
If you are a student like me, its particularly hard. The additional stress of asking parents for money for test and medicines.
Avantika— Yes, that does add to the stress. :^/
I am going to wash everything fabric and scrub EVERYTHING top to bottom, at least in my(Moxie’s) room. Hopefully that will get away any dust, fleas, or anything that could make her sneezing worse.
I hope the sneezing has been about the fleas. It’s not nice, fleas, but it’s perfectly curable at a reasonable price and it’s not actually a sickness which is good too.
((((((Moxie)))))) Get well now, girl!
I think I’m going to try and come up with the money to get the culture and tracheal wash done. She had a lot of sneeze attacks during the night.
If it’s an allergic reaction it may linger for some time even after the causative allergen is removed. It would still be in her system for some time. I don’t know about tapeworm but they wouldn’t die all at once I think they need to be at a certain stage of development in order to be killed by a de-wormer and that’s why you often need to do repeat treatment.
How does she seem otherwise?
Edit: I happened to come across this as I googled sth else, https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100110121859AAhTzMp
Don’t know if you’ve perhaps already read it. A culture seems rather like the way to go if this persista, but you should perhaps hold off on it for a couple of days and see.
Thank you Bam for the link. It was interesting to read, and there was some good information in it. I’m not rushing to have the Culture done either, we need to wait another week for her antibiotics to get out of her system otherwise we’d get false-negatives.
Otherwise she seems okay, although she’s been wanting to be in her home base a lot. I don’t know if it’s because she isn’t feeling well, or because she’s super annoyed that everything that I’ve been doing to her. (like giving her meds, syringe feeding her water and taking her to the vets.)
I don’t like her spending lots of time in her home base because it’s pretty small (only like 4 feet by 2 1/2 feet.) so I’ve been locking her out. But she gets mad and will scratch at the bars. Her new home base I planned on getting will have to wait to see if we’re spending $400 on this culture, I just spent $100 at the vet getting the de-wormings and flea treatment ect.
Here is her drinking some Pineapple juice:
She’s such a pretty girl. I have found cultures to be very helpful for things like this, but as you already treated for pasturella and had it come back so soon, I don’t know what kind of answers that would provide you with. That being said, it also could be very helpful. Not any help here!
I think that if she feels bad, she might just want to rest in her home base, I don’t know if locking her out is a good idea, although you know her best. Glad she seems feisty when you lock her out though, that’s a good sign.
Not a very helpful post, I just wanted to let you know I am thinking of you and Moxie. <3
Thanks LEL for the input.
Moxie’s been out playing for the last 2 days, and looks like she’s feeling a lot better, besides the sneezing. I even got to try and bond her with my dog again last night. It ended with Moxie flopping behind her box a little less then a foot away all annoyed while my dog was in her cage. My dog just wants to be friends with Moxie, although she can get a little excited and annoy Moxie lol.
I’m glad she seems better!
My dog tries to show Bam affection by licking him on his head or back, but Bam doesn’t appreciate it. To say the least.
My dog just gets excited and starts running around Moxie and sniffing her. I know my dog would never every hurt Moxie, but I’m still not too sure about Moxie yet.
We have scheduled the Culture/Trachea wash for next Tuesday. I’m dropping her off at 8AM (AKA wait in the waiting room pulling my hair out with stress! ) They said not to feed her after 4AM, that’s 4 hours of not eating. Is that okay? I heard not to fast a rabbit before a surgery, although this isn’t really a surgery… Any advice/suggestions?
Did you ask WHY you were not to feed her? Like, is there any specific reason? Normally you never fast bunnies, but 4 hours is perhaps not exactly fasting. My vet says they should eat right up to they’re being put under, they just shouldn’t have food in their mouths or esophagus.
(((((((Moxie))))))
I echo Bam with asking the reason for the 4 hours with no food.
(((((More Vibes for Moxie))))
I wasn’t the one on the phone talking to the vets, but will get in touch with them. Does anybody know how long Cultures and Trachea washes last?
I dont post much on the site (mostly cause my i pad is a lil “special” ) but i read all posts i send all my good vibes to you n moxie but from what ive had read from all the posts on this site you two are both strong and wonderful ladies. {{{{{{{{Moxie&Mama}}}}}}
Thank you Usagi26.
I should update that Moxie’s been on meds for a few days now, with not much improvement. Still sneezing and making the honking/coughing noises sometimes. I hope this clears it up because I don’t know what other meds I can try.
Moxie — just curious, is the air dry in the area she lives in? Have you ever run a humidifier in there?
I don’t think the air is is dry… But I’m not sure? And no I haven’t run a humidifier in there yet, but definitely planning on buying one soon! I just got an AC for this summer for Moxie, and the Humidifier is one of the next things on my list!
You can get a cool mist humidifier for under $20. We have one that we rin in our bedroom in the Winter that has auto shutoff, etc. I was just thinking that if the air is dry (from running the heat) that a little humidity might help. My hubby can’t sleep without it in the Winter — coughs and sneezes because he says the heat drys out his sinuses and throat.
You are very welcome Moxie I hope it e erything turns out ok
Yes JR, my sister has one for her pet bird.
