› Forum › THE LOUNGE › What ‘cha reading, watching or listening to currently?
I’m reading – “The Red Queen” by Philippa Gregory – just finished “The White Queen” – see a pattern here then the last of the Cousins Wars book (at least that I have) is “Lady of the Rivers” – I think there is one more but I don’t have it. But that’s okay because I’m kind of tired of her books but I’ve forced myself to read what I own. I have one more paperback by her but I cannot remember which one, that I’ll read. Not sure what I’ll read after these books.
I’ve been marathon watching “The Good Wife” on my Roku through Amazon Prime – I’m in Season 3 and have 2 more seasons I can stream – so good.
There are 2 movies on Netflix on my list – well there are tons more but after “The Good Wife” I want to watch “The Wolf of Wall Street” and “On My Way” with Catherine Deneuve….this is set in Concarneau, Brittany (France) where Etienne was from so I’m very excited to see this.
I also watched Miss Fishers Murder Mysteries on Netlix set in the 1920’s in Melbourne, Australia – loved these.
I just finished reading “The Book Thief” and Am watching “Once Upon A Time.”
Oh, and I’m also reading “Life Without Limits” It’s about this guy from Aussie who has no arms or legs. It’s actually a very motivational book.
As always, I am reading religion and theology books
I’ve also been watching Once Upon a Time! And Friends reruns… many many Friends reruns
I’m doing one MOOC in neuroscience and one in genetics, both by Duke uni. This means I haven’t got time for any other reading or listening. I have “Us” by David Nicholls on my night-table though. I’m looking forward to reading it.
Other than that I’ve just watched season 2 of House Of Cards. I’m starting season 3 of The Killing tomorrow. Both Netflix.
We sneak in a little time to watch whatever hubby records. Right now that seems to be Celebrity Apprentice, Grimm, Chicago PD. Just waiting on Walking Dead and Game of Thrones to come back on. Haven’t had time to read a book in ages (I’m one of those that can’t put the book down so I need lots of open time all at once!).
I’m excited to report that my pay tv expanded my channel viewing so am able to finally see ‘Orange is the New Black’, but I missed Season 1 completely along with Season 2 Episode 1, but watched Episode 2 and think it will be easy to get into even though I missed the beginning.
Oh Sarita, the Good Wife is the best!!! I’m sure here in Oz I’m up to season 6 this year (???). I like to record full Seasons as they air and watch them in one go – especially on a rainy miserable day while snuggled up in bed.
I watch so many series, too many to list, ha ha ha! I’m also big on a lot of our Aussie TV series that I won’t bother mentioning as I doubt anyone would know them. Oooh, Girl’s! I saw the advertisement to watch Season 1 & 2 and recorded it – I thought it was quirky, light entertainment so kept watching it. How surprised I was to see that it’s huge in the States – good to know I’m not the only one who enjoyed it after getting into it, ha ha ha ha!
Oh Moxie, is that the guy from QLD, who had all his limbs amputated just a few years ago??? He has a wonderful wife and I think 3 little kiddies…..
The wife had to decide on his behalf to amputate for a chance of survival or let him die. If this is who you are reading about, he is in the process of getting his new limbs.
Oh gosh bam – I can’t wait till Netflix becomes available here…. I’m counting down the days! I was told it’s sometime this year, finger’s crossed!
Much cheaper and more variety.
Downton Abbey and got the hubby into watching “Tiny House Hunters”
I read the book Orange is the New Black. My daughter said I can’t watch the series unless I FF through the sex parts…they didn’t happen anyway. Sad they feel they have to add it to sell a movie.
YES! Lol! I watch Downton Abbey tooo!
I didn’t see any naughty bits in Orange is the New Black, but then again I only watched one episode. I just come to expect the sex scenes MB, I can’t remember the last time I watched something without sex being seen or referred too…… it’s so out there, it doesn’t even faze me anymore, I barely notice. Though I do appreciate the shows that get them over and done with quickly, ha ha ha! I’d rather get back to the story line, LOL!
Yeah, but prison sex scenes, well, that would be disturbing. Rape, really, unless it’s consentual, but I got the feeling it isn’t. You’ll have to let me know. I don’t know when/if I’ll get to it. I’m really not a prude, but I’ve watched a couple of R movies lately that are more like X. I cannot believe they can put some of that stuff in R movies…and that my daughter watches it and is so immune to it that she has suggested we watch certain movies when she’s here, then she says, “OH I forgot about that part…and that…and that..and that…” Sheesh! Yes, get on with the storyline already!
AH— No, it’s about a guy named Nick Vujicic (is that his last name?) Who was born without arms and legs. The book is about how he was able to overcome obstacles and how we can too. It’s just a nice book all-in-all IMO if you are into those sorts of things.
LOL MB! Don’t watch Girl’s then! Ha ha ha! It’s all good – consensual, BUT…. it is out there! One thing I did admire – the star of the show (dam, can’t remember her name), she has this ‘NOT’ Hollywood type figure, and she plays the part perfectly. Maybe that’s why I enjoyed it so much?
And I have to admit, no one watches the stuff I watch (slacko’s!), so I never feel awkward – I watch my shows on my own. Lol!
Cool Moxie! My best friend from high school – her mum was born without an arm – being born without it, it was never an issue (no loss – does that make sense?). I noticed when I first met her (obviously), but then and to this day, I never give it a second thought – she’s just my friends mum, no different to anyone else’s mum.
The guy I was referring too – lost his limbs as an adult, husband, father to save his life – WOW! He is amazingly positive. A lot at that time in their lives wouldn’t be. Good on him! Cheers Moxie!
My son went to school with a boy who got run over with the dad’s lawnmower when he was three and lost 1/2 arm. How sad, right?? But the parents didn’t baby him and he played baseball and probably other sports, was quite popular, girlfriends… This got a bit off track, but I was just thinking of him. Not the same as all limbs, but…
AH I don’t think I’m going to put that series at the top of my list. Thanks for the warning. I’ll stick with Tiny Houses, Downton and all my true life crime (Unusual Suspects…)
I watch Unusual Suspects toooooo!!! Lol!
I pretty well watch everything on the true life crime channel MB! That’s actually why I got ‘pay TV’! Ha ha ha ha…….
Cool!! I can’t get enough of those shows!
Sarita- There is also “The White Princess” in that series. I got her new one “The King’s Curse” for Christmas.
I’m reading “Le Temps Viendra- A Novel of Anne Boleyn”. I’m really enjoying it. I just never get sick of books about her.
As for TV still catching up on Game of Thrones (I don’t get much TV time) and watching Sleepy Hollow and Downton. Really want to start Once Upon A Time (there’s 66 episodes on Netflix!) and Vikings.
Moxie- The last movie I watched was “The Book Thief”. Really good but so sad.
Sex scenes and references have definitely exploded. I like old reruns of shows but am the only one in my house that does. Anyone remember I Love Lucy? No sex, separate beds. Little House on the Prairie? They read and talk in bed. Waltons? I think only the kids ever went to bed and then it was only so everyone could say goodnight to John Boy. Even on King of Queens (the ultimate show! — AH — haha!), the bedroom scenes have Carrie in cute but comfy flannel pj’s.
Now, I make sure not to watch anything on Cinemax if there’s a chance I might fall asleep . . . fall asleep watching that channel and you’re going to wake up to “soft” porn and someone in your house asking what on earth you’re watching!
I’m sure Debra on ‘Everyone Loves Raymond’ wears the long flanno pj’s too Carrie! LOL!
AND…. don’t you have a timer on your TV Carrie??? (sorry, JR)???
As soon as I feel sleepy, the timer gets set for an hour (no porn for me! Girl’s is enough! Lol!), and I make sure to slide the control under my pillow so Henry can’t eat it while I sleep!
PS – OMG! Doesn’t this show our age…. I loved I Love Lucy, the Waltons AND Little House on the Prairie! Did you watch Grizzly Adams with the black bear??? What about cartoons – The Flintstones and The Jetsons were my fav’s!!! Ok, I’ll stop now…….
LOL!
AndHenry – it’s Lena Dunham who wrote and stars in Girls – I’ve watched it but it’s just so out there for me and yes, those sex scenes, very uncomfortable. I do admire her though.
I loved the first season of “Orange is the New Black” – haven’t gotten around to the second season yet. As for the sex scenes – they always make me uncomfortable but I think that’s what make good drama.
Thanks LPT – going to look into those books.
GRIZZLY ADAMS!!!!!!!!! He was my hero. I wanted to be him when I grew up!!!!! I could NOT get enough of him. WOW!!! Talk about a blast from the past! What a memory!! And, of course, Daniel Boone.
If I’m going through a tough spell, Little House is my comfort show. My husband (I shouldn’t admit this) went through a Glee binge for awhile. Once he quit his job, though, no more Glee. He just needed something “feel good” I guess. He’d only meant to watch the first episode, which had the song “Don’t stop Believing”, but then he kept going. It was a weird weird time for us.
Have a Yabba Dabba Do Time A Dabba Do Time!! We’ll have a gay old time!!!!!!!
Yes! Flintstones and the Jetson’s (I think I can still sing the intro! — One if my favorite trivia questions – what was the maid’s name?)
Alice! No wait. That’s the Brady Bunch.
JR I grew up watching most of those shows. Shows are definitely different these days. hehe
I watched the Red queen series I didn’t read the books. Its been awhile it was good from what I can remember. We watched The Killing on Netflix I liked it except the last season could have been better. I liked the ending mostly.
I listen to my husband’s books he is listening to when I ride in the car but I don’t know who writes what it is. Its a series of books called The Wheel of time.
As for what I am watching I recently started watching old episodes of Lockup. I don’t know why but I have. hehe Nothing really seems to exciting on atm just the usual shows.
Yes “The Book Thief” is a sad book, I haven’t seen the Movie, but I can really imagine it being sad!
I’m enjoying this thread and writing down a few of these titles to check out.
Sindriona – I listen to audio books a lot, but not if my hubby’s in the car too. It would put him to sleep at the wheel!
Megabunny I am actually surprised it doesn’t put my husband to sleep.
I just watched a newer version of Phantom of the Opera. It got kind of intense in some spots. The stage designs and costumes were gorgeous.
As for TV, the only series I’m keeping up on right now is the new Sailor Moon anime series. With getting the Xbox for Christmas, I’ve been doing a lot of gaming. Lol
As for reading, I just finished the last book of the Incarnations of Immortality series by Piers Anthony. My next read will be a manga series called xxxholic. But I’m waiting til I own all of the volumes before I start. I’m about half way there lol.
Listening to – I dug through my old CD binder and pulled out some music. Currently listening to a Power man 5000 album.
I’m heading to the library. I’ll let you all know if I pick up any good books.
AH — no timer. I fall asleep in the family room on the sofa and hubby just leaves me there while he goes upstairs and plays xbox all night.
Answer: Rosie
Megabunny — ok, Brady Bunch . . . dog’s name?
Why couldn’t you ask the dog name on Little house? And how can you remember all these? I remember what the dog looked like and some of the shows with him but cannot for the life of me think of it and I refuse to cheat an Google it, maybe I should start a new trivia thread, though My memory is the WORST!
I want to say something like Scruffy
The 3 books I got:
The Sight (About a wolf…)
Goose Chase
Cesar’s Way. The natural, everyday guide to understanding & correcting common dog problems.
Megabunny – Tiger! Little House was Bandit. I watched reruns of those shows practically every day in college after class and again a few years ago when I had surgery and was off for a month. My husband is better than I am!
Megabunny — Like my hubby, I remember useless things. Don’t ask me anything important or what I had for lunch!
Now I remember Tiger. Bandit? That must’ve been a newer dog. He was black and white, right? I was thinking of Jack
Moxie I have a friend who won a trip out to Calif. to spend time with Cesar not too long ago. She loved it!
I had forgotten about Jack! I think Jack was the first dog?
Megabunny— That’s too cool! It’s amazing how he can help misbehaving dogs. I like to watch his TV shows.
Just started to watch Dance Moms from Netflix… It’s an interesting, drama filled show.
I LOVE dance moms!
So does bunnytowne!!! He he he he he he……
(How strange that I remember that??? LOL!)
Ha ha, it’s a good show!
Just finished watching “The Good Wife” up to season 5 on Amazon Prime – SO GOOD – I’m sad I’m done.
Not sure what I’ll watch next…I have a bunch of shows DVR’ed so I’ll watch some of those I guess. I’m anxiously awaiting Season 3 of “House of Cards” on Netflix too.
I am really trying to catch up on my reading as well – finished “The Red Queen” by Phillipa Gregory – it’s was okay now am reading “The Lady of The Rivers” by Phillipa Gregory which I think was supposed to be the first in the series of Cousin’s Wars so I goofed up on that – it’s the best one though. After that I’ll be reading “Virgin Earth” by Phillipa Gregory and I’m done with all my Phillipa Gregory books which is fine because frankly I’m getting tired of these books.
It will be fun though shopping my book stash after that to decide what to read…
This probably sounds lame, but I’m totally addicted to the weekly show, “Stalker”, and really wish that I was several seasons behind on it so I could have a Stalker marathon, but it’s new, so I eagerly await each week. I know my daughter would love it too, but she’s in college and I couldn’t possibly wait several months for her to come visit and watch with me, though I’m saving “Big Bang”. She doesn’t know that, though, and is probably watching them at school. I keep forgetting to mention that to her. Oh, and for those who watch “Orange is The New Black”, my daughter went to some sort of show/presentation/whatever it was, with Laverne Cox at college. Sounds like there was just a HUUUUUGE turnout…like 700 people were promised to have a special meet and greet with her and get their picture taken (I’d think that would’ve taken all night) but they didn’t check w/ Laverne, and she put the kabosh on that, so only 60 random people got to meet her early and my daughter wasn’t one of them. But she was still excited to go.
I like house of cards too I haven’t finished watching it though. We watched The Fall on Netflix. It has Gillian Anderson from X Files and the guy that is I see in the Fifty Shades of Grey commercials. The Fall was pretty good. I am assuming there will be a season 3.
As for reading I have not had time to sit and read an actual book recently.
Well now that Bruce Jenner has announced he’s transgender, I’m wanting to watch “Transparent” on Amazon Prime…that’s not really the reason but it sounds good. I heard the creator of “Transparent” speak on NPR’s Fresh Air and was intrigued by this show so it’s on my list to watch as well. Just seems like such a coincidence about Bruce Jenner and this show.
Bruce Jenner?? Wow!
I saw a picture of Bruce Jenner on a magazine the other day. He is really starting to look like Michael Jackson after all of his surgeries.
Watching random stuff like Once Upon A time and Duck Dynasty…
The Good Wife has just started up here again in Oz, and I am going to try and resist watching till I have the whole Season to watch in one hit. I bet I’ll give in…… lol!
OMG MB!!! I watched the next episode of Orange is the New Black and WOW! It was ‘out there’! I see what you mean now….. but it won’t stop me from watching it, ha ha ha. Even though I missed Season 1 (bugga!), I am getting the gist/story line and am enjoying it – light entertainment.
Scandal is also back on YAY! and Revenge is starting up again soon too. Busy busy – who has time to read books?
LOL!
Watching: Backtrom
Reading: “Vegan Eats World,” by Terry Hope Romero
Listening: Our Hen House Podcast or some video game music on Pandora
Im listening to the Avenue Q soundtrack. IF there’s one thing to see in a theater, it’s this.
Just started a new book “The Devil’s Queen”. It’s about Catherine de Medici. Really excited to find out more about her.
Blacklist came back on last week, and Walking Dead comes back on tonight. Reading BB. Listening to my son complain because we took the truck away from him again.
Uh oh. Poor neglected kid
Pitch dark outside and he just left, going to walk almost 9 miles to a friend’s house on the other side of town.
Whaaaaat??? Isn’t it cold? Won’t he accept a ride???
I’m going nuts waiting for my son driving back home tonight 3 or 4 hours, which I imagine will take longer, but they have storm warnings of up to 18 inches in Albany for, oh, the next day and a half or so. I’m going nuts!!!! I’m afraid to text too soon and make him mad. Heaven forbid I worry!
It actually isn’t cold — got up to 65 degrees today (heat wave?). He did this when it was 30 degrees one time. Makes me nuts. He’s doing this to make us angry — says we can take the truck away but can’t keep him from going.
ouch
JR— Yikes… (hide his shoes to prevent him from walking ) And a heat wave here has been like 7 F lol.
Blacklist…. another TICK from me!
Moxie — much to AH’s dismay, if I hid his shoes he would just go barefoot!
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
Thought this that would get your attention AH! He’s actually more of a slippers or Toms kind of guy, but he’d do the winter barefoot thing just to prove he can do what he wants. My pet peeve with him and shoes — he will wear a pair of brand new shoes right out of the box out in the rain!
MM – You should come to the South. Yesterday we went to Charleston and it was 65 degrees, sun, blue skies, people eating outside for “Second Sunday” when they close off a street and restaurants serve outside so people can bring their dogs and have lunch, different people playing music/singing, college (?) kids sitting in an open window, listening to the music and people watching and lots and lots and LOTS of dogs EVERYWHERE!! Weird that everyone back home was hunkering in for yet another storm. I just HAD to send some video to family…it’s the only way they’ll get some sunshine for awhile
JR— Ha ha ha ha ha! We can’t have him going barefoot, or AH won’t be pleased!!!
MB– Warm weather!!!
And did anybody see that because the groundhog on groundhog day was attacking/biting people (from what I’ve heard) that we apparently have 6 more weeks of winter?????
Even I saw that here in Australia Moxie, ha ha ha ha……. I wonder if the Mayor’s ear has healed??? Lol!
Ha ha ha, I never saw the video, I’m going to have to look it up. I know his ear got bit but didn’t see how bad. I also didn’t know if all of the sudden the groundhog flew at him and attacked him? Will have to look that up on youtube, lol!
Just watched the video, lol!
I’m sure the groundhog was saying ‘you got me out of bed for this….’ and bit! Lol!
Ha ha, well they were holding Phil (the groundhog) right up to his ear. I don’t know, he was pretending to get the answer from him. He was just asking to get bit! LOL!
I agree Moxie! LOL! Good on Phil! That’ll teach them for getting him out of bed when it is still cold! Ha ha ha……
I told my husband I have to get my news off of BB! I hadn’t heard about that.
I think AH would bite, too, if someone woke her up and dragged her out of bed when it was still cold.
Wonder if there will be a new Phil next year, though we probably won’t know about it!
The hubby (or anyone actually) can confirm that when it’s COLD and I get dragged out of bed I will BITE tooo! Ha ha ha ha!
That’s all Winter is good for MB – staying snugged up in bed!
Though I am struggling to imagine how it feels to be cold at this very moment??? It is 9.30pm and I am sitting here in a singlet and shorts with all the windows open and the fan on. I’m not complaining – I haven’t had to put the AC on for over a week now – it’s lovely!
But poor Henry, he still needs ‘plucking’! He has tufts of hair sticking out all over him…… the hubby was patting him this morning and I said ‘pluck his butt (the fur sticking out) while your at it, ha ha ha ha!
JR: Your son sounds like a handful! Is he in trouble for something else or is there some other reason why you don’t want him to go to his friends house?
The second season of Bate’s Motel just showed up on Netflix, can’t wait to watch it! And season 4 of Game of Thrones is coming out on Blu-ray this month, yay! We don’t get HBO, so we’re always a season behind.
Hazel — he blew off college (walked away from an amazing opportunity and merit scholarship that he worked hard to get), only works part time, doesn’t help around the house, owes me a ton of money, doesn’t even put gas in the truck, and thinks he is entitled to do whatever he wants. The day I took the truck away, I found clean white sheets taken out of the dryer and dumped on the floor (next to a table and empty laundry basket) — he needed to de-wrinkle a t-shirt.
JR, aw, that’s too bad about the scholarship. Sounds like he feels a bit entitled. If I was you I would take away any privileges and stop paying for any of his expenses (phone?) until he straightens out. Have him pay rent. He lives in your house and as long as he does he needs to pitch in and respect your rules. If he doesn’t like it and feels he is an adult who can make his own choices, then well, he can go out there, find his own place and be an adult all he wants.
I just feel like if he doesn’t appreciate what he has, then he can go without. Throwing clean sheets on the ground? No sheets for you!
I hope you don’t take offense to me saying this, I don’t even have kids so it’s easy for me to run my mouth. I don’t mean to butt in or anything. (although I guess I just did… )
Hazel — no offense taken! You are absolutely right in everything you said. Its just hard when he’s an only child. There’s a little more to it, but you are still right. If I didn’t know better, I’d swear he was switched at birth!
It’s of course very different when you’re actually the one in this situation. And I can totally understand him being your only kid makes you want to be a little more lenient with him. I know you’re a great person and parent, and I just hate for him to not appreciate what you do for him.
By the way, if you ever decide you want to make up a bit of the money that he owes you by selling some of his music stuff, the hubby and I would be happy to take it off your hands.
LOL!
So my son makes me so angry then turns around today and emails me a clip of a song he wrote and is recording. He knows I melt when I listen to his voice. Such a brat!
Just remember it’s the age. You’re giving him a great home life and he will come out the other side. My friends say it takes til they’re 27 years old..but there are happier times ahead. I would melt too!!
27?!?! That’s like 6 1/2 more years!
Starts packing bags to go stay with AH for 6 years . . .
I was just watching Jon Stewart. So disappointed that he is retiring. It’s too soon!
LBJ I could tell that something was different from watching the show lately. I am kind of not surprised but will miss him. I wonder who will replace him. John Oliver would have been an obvious choice if he didn’t already have his own show.
JR I think I may pack my bags and join you at AH’s house as well… these boys will drive us insane. hehe
Just started “Virgin Earth” by Philippa Gregory and it’s quite different from her other novels which is a nice change – once I’m finished with this, I’m done with Philippa Gregory for awhile.
Been watching “Say Yes to the Dress” on DVR – it’s a silly show but I do love looking at wedding dresses which is the only reason I watch it…maybe because I never had a wedding dress myself. I also like watching “Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta” and “Something Borrowed/Something New” – don’t have to think too hard just enjoy pretty dresses. So I’ll probably finish watching those 3 series that I currently have DVR’d.
Sarita I also like watching all the Say Yes to the Dress shows. I like the blush colored dresses. If I ever had a vow renewal I would choose a dress in that color.
Sindriona – Yeah, in his own words he has been “restless”. He wants to move on to new things and let someone else have the spotlight for awhile. And yes, I want John Oliver back. Maybe he’ll tell HBO to heck with them. LOL
I watch say yes to the dress sometimes, I like seeing all the dresses.
Sarita- I enjoyed “Virgin Earth”. I really want to get the sequel “Earthly Joys.”
MoxieMeadows: Say Yes to the Dress is so entertaining! Love seeing the pretty dresses and hoping I can wear one on my wedding day I also like What Not to Wear and Love, Lust, or Run
{Alli}— I enjoy watching what not to wear also! I’ve never seen love, lust or run though.
I think the only thing I am reading is BB? Trying (forever) to get caught up!
LEL— LOL!!
Just found a new show called Allegiance. It’s like a KGB/FBI version of 24. Fast paced, intense.
*sigh* John Oliver renewed his contract with HBO for 2 more seasons so he won’t be taking over the Daily Show. I’m sad now. =(
JR I will have to check that show out.
LGJ I figured he was going to get picked up for more seasons. its too bad.
My little sister has recently started watching H2o:Just add water. It’s about mermaids?
I watched an episode of a show called “Brain games” from Netflix. It’s about how your eyes and mind can trick you ect. It’s kinda cool.
Listening to some old Rodney Dangerfield stand up. Man this guy was awesome.
Moxie – Yeah, that’s on the national geographic channel all the time, I think. I’ve watched it before. Some of the stuff is pretty cool. They show us how our brains can trick us and we see things that aren’t there.
I started watching Downton Abbey when I couldn’t fall asleep last night… It was good for a bit, but I did fall asleep pretty soon afterwards so I couldn’t tell you for sure. I’m still reading BB!
LBJ-What’s up with your avatar… Team Bacci? What? I must have a sticky around…
LOL Amanda – I asked LBJ the same thing in the chat thread……. ha ha ha!
Mwhahahahahaha!
