› Forum › DIET & CARE › Worried about Yohio
Yohio is still not right. He takes a few mouthfuls of greens, then stops eating. I thought he was doing so much better so I didn’t syringe-feed him this morning, he ate some kale and willow and hopped around, dug a tunnel in a stack of towels, ventured out on the balcony even. These last few days he’s been so much better and almost normal amounts of poop and pee. He’s been sleeping in my bed, not under it.
And then in the afternoon today, he just sat again. Refused even a pumpkin seed (but hopped right up to it as if he wanted it, then didn’t take it.) I brought out the CC and the syringe and fed him like 10 mls + simethicone. He was very, very angry with me and attacked my hand and growled (I’ve told him it’s ok to bite mommy, but he doesn’t).
I fed him twice more tonight and he sat in my bed with me as I did some studying, his head sort of wobbled a little like when you try to sit up but keep falling asleep. He ate pumpkin seeds (they’re not good for him but he must eat something!!!) and a few leaves, but it seemed to me like he’s taken a turn for the worse, like he wasn’t comfortable.
I’m calling the vet first thing tomorrow. In the mean time, does anyone have a clue as to what may be going on? He’s barely 2 years old (estimate, but a good one). He’s not a dwarf (thinking of tooth issues), the vet couldn’t see anything wrong with his molars with her instrument, she took him into another room so I wasn’t there to see it.
After each time he’s had his CC-mix, he perks right up (after like 30 mins or so) and acts normal. But it’s like he won’t eat enough on his own to keep him going.
I’m so afraid for him. My yellow darling.
I wish I had some advice but really don’t. All I keep thinking is that, since he perks up and acts normal after the CC but not eating well on his own, is that it hurts to chew. I wish bunnies could talk.
{{{{{{Yohio}}}}}}
Oh bam, I find this so distressing, I can only imagine how your feeling. Yep, I think it’s vet time…. I have absolutely no idea, so am no help till you get to the vet – but now that JR has mentioned that, I can’t help but wonder the same thing??? It makes sense….
(((((Yohio)))))
Vibes to see Yohio through till you get to the vet. And make sure he knows how worried we all are for him – hug’s!
Did the vet sedate him to see his teeth? It might be necessary to get a really good look. Some buns are very sensitive and will show signs of discomfort even if the molars are not that bad.
Did he receive any antibiotics when you went in before ?
Thank you for your support!! I so appreciate it!!
He wasn’t sedated went we went in before, it was an emergency appointment. We didn’t get any antibiotics.
He eats during the night, mostly willow and Jerusalem artichoke leaves, he was very interested in some clover I picked yesterday but I only dared give him a few leaves since clover has a bad rep. And he comes and DEMANDS pumpkin seeds and of course he can only have 1 or two, but he’s like frantic for them. He’s gone off hay and pellets. I’ve ground up hay to a fine powder, mixed with water and given in a syringe. I also gave water yesterday because he won’t drink, and it was like he really enjoyed the water, Tooth-ache wouldn’t prevent a bunny from drinking. But tooth-problems seem like the most likely explanation for this.
The vet opens soon. I don’t trust them like a 100%. There is a supposedly good rabbits’ vet 80 kilometers from here but that’s a long car-ride with a sick bunny.
Roberta, is Pascal well now?
Oh Bam…Poor little Yohio!
(((((((((((Vibes)))))))))))
Thank you LEL!!!
Now he’s muching away on kale under my bed. I’ve scheduled a vet’s appt for tomorrow.
See, I have magical kale-munchy vibes.
Good luck at the vets tomorrow!
Any update bam?! I have no clue what time it is where you are…
(((Yohio!)))
Hi Beka, it’s 7.12 am where I am right now. Vet-appt at 9.30 am.
I fed him 4 times yesterday. Perfectly normal behavior in the evening and now this morning. But he’s tricked me into believing he’s well before. He eats some leaves. He even ate an almond yesterday (theyre not supposed to have almonds but if he wants sth, he gets it now, it’s just important that he eats on his own.)
I watched the dental procedures videos here on BB last night. Awesome dentist! I want to inform myself as best I can before the vet-appt.
Update: Went to the vet, had to wait for 45 minutes, then another vet came and said my vet was sick. But she took a look at Yohio, sid he was in excellent shape, that I’ve done a good job feeding him and gave me a new appt for tomorrow morning for full anaestesia and teeth-exam.
Yohio really was in ridiculously good shape for a sick rabbit – interested in his surroundings, bright-eyed and plump and his fur thick and shiny, no stress-shedding. It’s almost like he’s recovered – but he’s done that before these last two weeks.
Now I’ve fed him today’s second meal and he took it from the big syringe. What a good boy!
Vibes for the little man……..
{{{Good vibes for him and you.}}}
Sorry to hear that he hasn’t been so well, lately. I hope either he’s through it, or they find and fix his dilemma during his vet visit.
Thank you!
He’s not eaten since I gave him his CC at around 11 am. I can’t catch him to feed him tonight, he won’t be caught. He hides under the bed and won’t move until I go around to the other side of the bed, then he moves away. And that’s what we’ve been doing for 30 minutes now. I even became angry so now I’ve probably scared him into stasis.
It’s probably sth wrong with him that I can’t afford anyway, his insurance doesn’t cover dental work. (No small-pets insurance in Sweden does).
Edit: as you can see, this is stressing me out sth terrible. Poor rabbit.
Oh Bam,
I’m so sorry this is being such a battle. I just found out about Vetpay here in Australia… Maybe there is something like that over there. Basically it is a short term loan with easy repayments, I suspect it is like the US Carecredit.
Are there any other vets in your area at all… It might pay to ring around as sometimes the staff changes and a place that didn’t have a bunny savvy vet before may have one now. I went from having none in my area to having several in the space of a few months.
Thank you, Roberta!
I’ve checked him in to the vets for the teeth-exam now. I’m to pick him up in 7 hours. They will call if they find sth that needs deciding, that’s not fixable by some simple procedure. Luckily he ran out into the hallway himself this morning, or I could never have caught him. I don’t think he’s eaten any of the stuff I gave him during the night.
Thinking of you bam! (((((YOHIO)))))
Please let our bunny be ok………
(so worried!)
Thank you, Andi! ! He wants to get well so he can go back to eating your (his) delicious Aussie comforters!
LOL! I’ve saved a whole patch just for him!
I’m ok with sleeping under a sheet, I don’t need any warmth….. ha ha ha ha!
They called from the vet and said he had slightly elevated molars in his lower jaw and that they’d trim (grind) them down. Just like LPT said, they said some bunnies are very sensitive. They didn’t think there were any infections at the roots. So I’m to pick him up in 4 hours and hope he eats like he should then.
When I left him and the vet they said they’d only call if there was something unexpected (meaning sth really bad), so my heart nearly stopped when they called. But apparently the vet who called had got orders to call if they did find sth with his teeth, and they did.
Relief!!! Best news ever! Lets hope this does the trick…..
PS – Yep, I work on the ‘no news is good news’ – no wonder your heart almost stopped! But at least you know now – so wonderful!
His portion of my comforter is all ready for his newly trimmed teeth (molars), lol! Welcome home Yohio!
That’s good news that they have found a cause. I think Pascals was caused by a hind leg sprain. He is moving fine now and was chomping about in his hay yesterday.
I’m so glad Pascal is well again!
Just picked up Yohio at the vet. He’s a bit drowsy still and he’s not wanted to eat so they’ve given him CC. He had small (very small) spurs on the cheek-sides of the lower jaw and his lower molars were rather high so they took quite a bit off. Now he’s sitting under my bed and doesn’t make a sound. I hope this will fix him. It wasn’t expensive, I payed the equiv of 96 Aussie dollars (82 American dollars, 52 British pounds).
I’m glad you figured out what was wrong. He will most likely be sensitive for a few days. Bindi usually is. Try serving his pellets as a warm mash by mixing with a bit of water.
Thank you LPT, that’s very good to know! How often does Bindi have his teeth trimmed?
Yohio is still groggy. I’ve just fed him, then he hopped out into the hallway and fell asleep under a chest of drawers near where Bam’s sitting and eating an apple-twig. That’s rather nice I think.
I hope Yohio gets to feeling better soon.
Thak you, Sindriona!
He’s still not eating and he was a total beotch about his CC this morning, I could barely get anything into him. Maybe his gums are still sore, I’ll give him today then call the vet again tomorrow morning if he’s no better. He’s very shy now and doesn’t hop around. Almost no pee and poop.
Edit: He’s not in good shape. Bit me hard in the thumb when I tried catching him for a bit of lunch. I can’t get hold of him, he’s extremely “clever” and knows exactly how far I can reach. He’s not eaten anything at all on his own and the litterboxes are empty. Not only is he not better, he is worse. I’ve noone to take me to the vet today.
Since the vet just saw him, give the vet a call. Hopefully they can give you advice over the phone.
{{{{{Yohio}}}}}
I’m just to keep feeding him. My mother was kind enough to come and help me catch him so now he’s gotten his lunch.
Of course they want me to bring him in tomorrow, Friday, so they can keep him over the weekend. I’ve emailed another rabbit-vet, hope she answers. Otherwise I don’t have a choice, he’s in pain and they won’t prescribe pain-meds. I can’t have him suffer.
That’s awful they won’t give you pain meds. You should try insisting. Bindi always needs Metacam for a few days after.
Bindi gets his teeth done about every 4 months or so. He starts showing symptoms like mushy poos and sometimes a bit of weight loss.
((((((Yohio- Feel Better Soon)))))
Oh bam, this is terrible! I can’t believe you can’t get pain meds??? Honestly, I want to post you my Metacam.
I am so worried for Yohio (((((VIBES))))) and a hug for you – you need it!
Thank you for your support! It means more than I can say. This is so upsetting.
He’s still not eating. He’s very, very feisty though, like a small bear. He tries to dig me into submission when I feed him.
He drank from his bottle in the night though. He’s never used that bottle before, he just has it in case he’d flip his water-bowl over. So I was surprised to hear it.
I don’t think insisting would get me anywhere. Maybe they are afraid I’ll turn him into a junkie.
Update: Called the vet now. The vet tech said she’d ask to the vet to prescribe some metacam. They recommended the other vet that’s 80 km from here for tough cases with exotic animals. I’ll call them and try and schedule sth for next week.
Edit update again: He’s now gotten metacam. Had to put it in his CC in droplets, stupid little package, I hope he got most of it in him, I know he has some under his chin. He’s eaten 1/2 willow leaf today. Called specialist vet, they’ve reduced staff next week due to education elsewhere, so I couldn’t book an appt, but I’m to call back on Monday if he isn’t well by then.
He tried to dig me to death during the lunch-syringing. He is very strong.
Did you try offering him some warm mushed up pellets. Glad you got the metacam. He’s def a difficult little guy, my buns love the taste of metacam.
((((Yohio))))
I tried the warm mushed up pellets. He gave me a look saying “You’re an even bigger idiot than I thought if you think I’m eating THAT.” I’ve kept offering him mushed up pellets on a plate but he ignores it.
He’s still not eating. He hops right up to whatever I offer him, has a sniff, then pulls back his head with a growl. He’s not pooped much but at least he’s peed some. When I brought him fresh willow he was very interested, eagerly had half a leaf, then stopped – like, no, I can’t.
Maybe it’s a stomach ulcer? Then I should give him some zantac (ranitidin). I can get zantac but only the people kind.
With the Metacam, honestly bam – I know your gonna hate me saying this – but grab him (your gonna need your mum again) and honestly, get your mum to hold him while you shove the syringe down his throat (you know what I mean). Once he gets some pain relief, he’s gonna be happier and feel so much better. He may not like it at the time, but he will feel better for it. It’s better for him to get a full dose than to get a bit in some food and it won’t do the job.
Sorry if this comes across as harsh, I don’t mean it to – but you know me well enough to know what I mean. I just think Yohio needs some relief from any pain he is suffering for him to be able to relax and know you really are trying to ease it for him.
I know when I am in pain I can’t stand the thought of anyone touching me, and food is the last thing on my mind. I’m guessing Yohio, for all he’s been though must be feeling the same way…..
Edit to ADD – If you were anyone else, no way would I have said what I said to you, again I trust you know me enough to get what I mean…. I’m so worried that your so worried. Like you, I just want Yohio to feel better. I really think the Metacam will help immensely. But he needs a full dose for it to work, especially as he hasn’t received it till now – poor baby.
Andi, I do see what you mean and I did shove as much Metacam as I could down his little throat – and it seems like he has indeed gotten relief from it. He’s not as grumpy, he’s not growled at me even once and he actually hops around a bit. Whatever is wrong with him, knowing that he’s not in pain is a huge relief for me too. It’s so unfair not to treat pain in animals.
He’s still not eating though. I bought some fresh cilantro for him and he sniffed it, but decided against it. Poor little darling.
I am so relieved bam! Even though the Metacam is working, Yohio may need time to get his appetite back – sometimes the relief from pain is enough and hunger will come along after. Just keep his favourite food available and once he has settled, hopefully he will eat on his own accord. It may take a second dose (when he’s allowed/due) for him to trust the pain is really gone. If he doesn’t eat after an hour of receiving a second dose, you may have to do the CC again. It’s been such a long time since he’s been well, he may need time to get back to normal?
And I’m with you bam – as distressing as all this is for you (and us BBer’s cause we love him too!), knowing Yohio is no longer in pain is most important. I was so happy when I read that you finally got the Metacam. I was being serious – not sure how long delivery would take, but I was on the verge of saying what the hec and sending/posting you mine! It was so unfair that Yohio didn’t get pain relief. I hope it makes all the difference.
omg I’m so sorry to hear Yohio hasn’t been feeling well and jumping in so late! I know how gut-wrenching it feels with each day he isn’t getting better =(
Since Yohio is hard to catch, I don’t know if this will help – but Simba was going into stasis like 4 months back and during the wait for a next day vet appointment, I confined him in an open space using an exercise pen with a bowl of water and his litter box and I stayed on the floor with him relentlessly trying to give him his favorite veggies (literally trailing him with the piece of veggie in front of his face). I also rubbed his belly whenever I could while he was sitting (but that was stasis issues which I don’t know would help in Yohio’s case with his molars). At some point I was either too annoying or he knew I meant well that he nibbled a little of the veggie and drank some water which led him to eating a little bit at a time because it was just so important that he got something down on an empty tummy for almost 12 hours.
~~> ((healing vibes for Yohio!)) <~~
Granted it’s not tooth related, but when Pete isn’t eating as much, usually the best way to perk his appetite is a little watered-down apple juice. He’ll suck it down and generally go back to eating like a horse shortly after.
{{{Lots of good vibes for Yohio.}}} Force-feeding medicine to anyone that doesn’t want to take it is always upsetting to both parties, but sometimes necessary. I’m sorry that he’s not doing better yet Maybe you can drip the metacam on some banana for him? It’s mushy and may be sweet enough for him to associate meds being a good thing since that way after eating his mouth will start to feel better? Not sure how big a dose he gets, but it’s just a thought. Best wishes your way!
MijOok: He was absolutely feeling better yesterday, came out and socialized with Bam and he’s even eaten a little during the night. Yesterday I confined him to the hallway because I can’t catch him when I’m alone, but it makes him so unhappy, he tries to dig through the bedroom door to get back into his “home” under the bed. But last night he cried out a little hoarse cry when I caught him for his dinner, so I don’t know what is worst for him. So confining him is perhaps the best option. When I pester him with food he growls and boxes, but last night he came and demanded pets even!
Cottontail: Didn’t see your post earlier. He eats when he’s syringe-fed, I refuse to back down just because he doesn’t like it. He clearly has poor judgement. After the horrible horible CC, he perks up and becomes almost a normal bunny. So he definitely has a problem with thinking 2 steps ahead. Now he’s eating sth under the bed, the best sound there is =)
Andi, you are so incredibly sweet!!! I will definitely give him a second dose of Metacam today, he can have 30 droplets once every 24 hours. The improvement yesterday was so heart-warming. I’ll keep feeding him too though, because he’s lost some weight now after the day he was sedated.
Thank you so much for your concern, it really is the greatest comfort. I keep telling him he has support from the other sde of the world, from so many people who wants him to get well!
Small update:
The metacam is working. He’s eating some on his own, like cilantro, dandelion greens and willow and pumpkin seeds, I think he even ate a slice of apple earlier. It’s the best appetite I’ve seen him have in a long time. I keep feeding him though but not as large portions and he’s only had 3 portions today. I think the CC + pumpkin is good for him, sick animals (and humans) need all their nutrients. I hope he’ll sleep in my bed tonight again.
I got an email from the other vet I contacted, she too suggested the same specialist clinic as my own vet suggested. It was nice of her to answer though.
I am glad to hear he is doing a bit better. I hope you get an answer from the vet soon.
That’s great news… Hopefully he has turned the corner
Glad to hear he’s eating!!!!!
Thank you =)
I’m not so sure he’s ok though. He only eats willow and pumpkin seeds. He eats the tough twigs of willow too though, not just the leaves, He’s very angry and un-trusting, he bit me hard in the shoulder yesterday. I don’t care though and I’ve told him that. But I hate that he doesn’t trust me. He has to have his CC. It’s so sad that it makes him so upset though.
How is Yohio doing today? We’re still sending healing vibes his way.
Oh no… What a mess! This has me really worried… He’s a young-ish bun still, right?! It does sound like there is something more going on, but what i don’t know… :-\
He’s eaten quite a bit of willow during the night and cilantro. He’s not had any CC for 16 hours (but he’ll get some for breakfast now) and he’s hopping around and following me into the kitchen etc, so that’s an improvement. I didn’t give him Metacam yesterday and he’s still been eating (he was only to have metacam for 3 days, there’s very little left in the bottle now).
He’s only 2 years old, Beka. If he’s not keeping this improvement up, it’s time for the big guns, the Bird-clinic in Hjarup (They’re just called the Bird-Clinic, they’re specialists on exotics).
Something about willow. One time Bindi was in a really bad stasis and wouldn’t eat anything for days except willlow leaves.
Starting to think we should pitch together and send you and Yohio a big pile of willow.
This is speculation, but I recall reading somewhere that willow has a lot of tannin in it. It’s the same stuff that makes you want to pucker a bit after sipping wine. It’s also in lots of nuts, berries, and even fruits/juices. Supposedly it’s the same acid compound in cranberries that helps heal/prevent urinary tract infections with people… maybe those tannins are why he’s so into willow? If he knows he feels icky but not sure what to do about it?
I hope he gets to feeling better. I am sorry to hear that he isn’t back to eating normally and feeling like his normal self.
Cottontail, =) Luckily I have a huge willow tree in my back yard that still has leaves on it. Yohio is kind of into tannins, he readily eats beech.leaves f ex (but there are none left this time of year), Willow also has salicylic acid so perhaps it is a bit pain-relieving. Now he’s eating dried apple as well, I found an old jar deep in a kitchen cupboard.
He’s a bit better still, not quite as angry, but I keep feeding him anyway, only not as much, because he proably needs the extra nutrients.
Sindriona, thank you.
This has been such a long haul. I hope he comes around soon
I hope he feels better
