Someone I know has a girl mini lop that she is trying to rehome. She has offered to give the bun to me, along with the cage and outdoor enclosure. All she is asking for is a good loving home, which she knows she will have with me. I would love to take her in, as I wanted to get Bashful a friend once he was fixed, but my only concerns are that:

1.) My netherland dwarf is only 12 weeks, and cannot be neutered til around January, a few months from now, and the girl bun is 20 weeks and isn’t spayed, and I’m assuming I would have to keep them separate until they’ve both been done before I can even start the bonding process?

2.) Bashful has full access to my bedroom, even when I am not there, as this is the only place in the house that is bunny proofed, and the only place my parents will allow him to stay as he is my pet and my responsibility. He is only in his cage of a night time, and I’m worried that if I bring in this new bun, he will become territorial. Or if I was to keep him in his cage while the new bun has her daily exercise, which he isn’t used to and tends to shake the cage very aggressively, that he will resent the new bun for him being put away. (I can’t really see Bashful being territorial or mean, as he is by far the most loving bunny I have ever met. He licks everyone he meets and is sweet and playful. Knowing him, he would probably love the new bun instantly. But I want to expect the worst, instead of expecting everything to go swimmingly.)

However, Bashful has recently learned to jump on my bed and has been peeing and chewing the bedding, as well as the other furniture around my room. He’ll only do this when I’m not with him, so I’m assuming it’s that he is lonely and wants to show his displeasure of not having someone around. Another reason why I’m considering getting a friend for him. But because of this, my parents have offered to help me close off a corner of my room. (This is quite hard to explain without showing someone.) We’re building a little run going up in this cupboard type unit, and blocking off the area around it so that he also has a little flat ground to run around. I was thinking of ditching his cage and keeping him in there all the time, making that little section of my room HIS room, so that the only things he can chew are his and not my expensive Ikea furniture.  Of course, I’d let him out to roam my whole room while I’m in there with him, but it would be better for him to stay in there while I’m out, rather than his large store bought cage.

But if I was to bring in this new bun, it would be very unfair to keep him closed off in his corner, and keep her out in my part of the room, like he used to have? The current owner said that she is okay with being in her cage, so as long as I don’t do what I did with Bashful, and give her too much freedom too quick, she may be okay with only being let out of her cage only while I’m in the room? I don’t think there’s anywhere I could build her her own little corner, as this is the only space I have? Once they’re bonded, would I be able to keep them both in the little bunny corner? Or is it best to keep them separate, even after they’re fixed and bonded?

Is bringing in this new bun a good or bad idea?

You definitely want to have both bunnies altered before you start any bonding. You’ll want to wait several weeks after de-sexing to give their hormones time to calm down.

Or if I was to keep him in his cage while the new bun has her daily exercise, which he isn’t used to and tends to shake the cage very aggressively, that he will resent the new bun for him being put away.

I don’t think bunnies think like that. He may resent being in his cage, but I very much doubt he’s going to blame the new bunny.

As far as Bashful peeing on your bed, this is very common for bunnies, especially unaltered ones. They are marking the bed. For some reason, they like marking beds and couches that smell like their humans.

Before getting a second rabbit, I recommend doing some reading on bonding. A good place to start is here on Binky Bunny in the “Bunny Info” section. Bonding can take several weeks or even months so make sure you have the time to commit to it.
