My rabbit recently started to love jumping on my bed and sleeping with me at night. I was very happy because he had never gone to the bathroom outside I his cage and I started leaving him out throughout the night about a month ago and he seems to love it. But I just woke up to the smell of rabbit pee next to me. I had to get up and put my rabbit back Into his cage and he was very unhappy. He has been a free bunny for a whole month now and his cage us on the smaller side because he only goes in it for food and water and to use the litter box so I feel bad having to lock him in there at night. I have a vacation coming up and I was planning on getting him neutered after. Is this why he is peeing? What can I do to fix this, I like seeing him free and happy 24/7 an I don’t want to have to wait a few months until I can let him out all the time again.

This is very common and it has nothing to do with litterbox training. It is marking because it smells the most like you. The only thing you can do is prohibit him from being on your bed. Eventually it will stop once he gets older (maybe). Couches and beds are prime spots for rabbits to mark whether they are fixed or not due to the strong smell of humans.

You just told my story Lexidavoulas before Henry was neutered. One morning my hubby (who slept in the spare bed cause he snored) came into the bedroom at 5am as he was leaving for work and he actually (while I slept) changed my top blanket/comforter – apparently I was covered in bunny wee and POO! and as much as married people want revenge on each other – he said he couldn’t leave me sleeping like that (gosh – he does love me? lol!). I too couldn’t PUT Henry to bed – so rang the vet and he was neutered the next day. Even though it can take up to 6 weeks (?) for the hormones to settle – Henry only wee’d on my bed once (no complaints – he didn’t spray! I’ll take a piddle puddle any day!) and have never had a wee/poop problem since. Henry has been living free range happily ever after. (or should I say – I’ve been sleeping bunny wee/poop free since happily ever after). Cheers.

I have the same problem! My bunny is fully litter trained but for some reason as soon as she gets up on the couch she pees all over the pillows! She fully knows better but I’m pretty sure she does it on purpose. My guess is because she is marking the area with her scent or marking the area as hers. Maybe it is a control thing?

nothing like a hot blast on your arm from a bigger bunny.

get a plastic painting dropcloth from home depot to put over the couch,, then put a giant fleece or comforter over it

also keep a spare litterbox specifically for couchtime. some buns give a shorter warning than others (digging or taillift)

Ha, I should laugh, but welcome to having a house bun!

Our sofa was prime target a few months ago, but since moving everyone around a bit, we have on bun in permanent residence in the bedroom, and, for the first few months, yup, he would typically pee on the bed… Normally on my side, up around about where my shoulders would be, typically…

But, now that he knows the bedroom is pretty much permanently his, he doesn’t pee anywhere other than in the corner of his cage.
And he’s out all the time, all our buns are out 24/7…
His territory has been marked, now he’s happy and our bed is dry…
