Finding a good small exotics vet can be such a headache, I’m very thankful to have my vet.

I brought the whole “herd” in yesterday for nail trims – Zeus, Hera, and my guinea pig Zephyr.  I also wanted to have Zeus checked to see if he needed another sanitary shave.  I always get to work with the same one or two vet techs – they actually have specialized small exotics techs on staff that are experienced with rabbits.  They do a great job getting the nail trims done quickly and minimize stress.

Zeus is a giant chicken for nail trims and hates to be weighed – pretty much anything that involves him being picked up, he just flails all over the place.  They’ve pretty much perfected the art of trimming his nails while keeping him on the exam table; they just kind of roll him sideways and stretch out each paw, LOL.

Once everyone’s nails were trimmed (Hera was a little superstar, good girl), the actual DVM checked Zeus and yay, he didn’t need shaving again.

They’ve always been totally great with the buns.  When Zeus got neutered, the vet actually kept him in her office while he recovered because it was quieter, and so she could keep a close eye on him as he came out of the anesthesia.  And Hera, I adopted her from the clinic, and they did her spay at no cost!

Who else has an awesome vet, and why are they so great?

Living in the only state of Australia that bunny’s are banned (!!!!!!!) I adore my vet cause he is only a 20 minute drive away and HE EXISTS! Being ‘dumb’ first time bunny owners – he never once made us ‘feel’ stupid. He was compassionate, but had a sense of humour – offering simple basic advice, not overwhelming us, and didn’t roll his eyes when we asked questions. Even though Henry is an indoor bunny, the vet strongly suggested the vaccine for mosquito spread disease (sadly not both cause the one for Myxo isn’t available to us Aussies – I actually found that out from Bam on the other side of the world). Because Henry had a sleepover we took in food, & he politely pointed out that it was ‘CRAP’ and suggested Oxbow (have to drive 35 minutes to get it – bugga!). The staff bunny talked to us – how cool! We got a phone call when he came out of surgery and when we collected him the next day he had fresh food in his cage (I’m guessing someone’s lunch?).

The reason ‘I love my vet’ – forbid if anything happened to Henry, my vet is right there! to make my precious Henry all better again.

Your vet sounds awesome, I’m jealous he’s so close by!  My vet is nearly an hour away.

I love my vet. I’ve only been in to see her once, but she was so gentle with Chester and she asked me a ton of questions. She had printed off all the info from the house rabbit society to give me, because she’s seen a lot of rabbit owner that didn’t do their research!!! She was so impressed he was free roam and well taken care of

She’s also just around the corner from my house, which is a plus!

I am so lucky bunnnnnnie!, especially considering that bunny’s are illegal here! I get lost on some forums talking about this and that bunny product etc., cause it just doesn’t exist where I live – I’m grateful I can access his Oxbow – no other brand is available! Good thing Oxbow is a fav amongst other BBer’s, and a lot support it as a good nutritional bunny brand.
I did tell one little fibby – my vet did roll his eyes once! Like BubblesJo, I told the vet that Henry was free range along with 3 dogs – showed him a picture of the 4 of them on my bed (and I wasn’t even in it??? What tha?) and I’m not sure he realised he did it, but I did see his eyebrows lift and his eyes go into the back of his head. Ha ha hah!

Your vet sounds awesome! Given that rabbits are illegal where you live, were you never worried that he might tell on you though? I would think that veterinarians have some sort of legal obligation to inform the authorities if they come to know that a person possesses an animal illegally. I don’t mean to say he should, of course .

Hey Hazel – I did too at first, and even considered giving a false name and contact details, ha ha ha…. but no – not at all. He has no obligation, or as he put it ‘no interest in passing our information on’. I’m sure his only concern was that Henry is well cared for, and I’m sure he could see that on our arrival with our boy, even if we were bunny ignorant at the time. And I’m sure the 300 bucks later (from his neuter and vaccination) helped! Lol…..
We have gone to one extreme though – except for immediate family, we still have not told anyone (friends) of our newest family addition. Not that we don’t trust them, it’s just not worth the risk of an innocent slip of the tongue. Besides adoring ‘all’ you guys, why else do you think I’m BB obsessed – I can bunny talk here to my hearts content, ha ha ha!
I do think though (and even agree) if we had a pet that wasn’t domesticated (so super illegal) he may consider doing the right thing?

Maybe he would. I was wondering if he would get in trouble if you were caught with Henry and they found out that the vet provided services to you, since that kind of makes him an accomplice, right? That’s mainly why I thought a vet in his position might tell someone, just to keep himself out of trouble.

Hubby and I always fantasize about having a more exotic pet but in our state they don’t allow any of that. You can’t even have a Savannah cat. And like you said, if it was an exotic animal, a vet might feel more obligated to spill the beans.

                        I also love my vets!
They’re a 20 minute walk or 10 minute bus ride from my house, which always helps.
They are so friendly, and definitely know what they’re doing.

The place is really modern and clean and has little paw prints on the floor <3
They know a lot about rabbits, and have all the best stuff for them. They have a 24 hour emergency service, and state of the art rabbit anesthesia for buns, which really puts me at ease.

They’re so nice and friendly, I just love them!
