Is grapefruit seed extract safe to put on rabbits? I’ve been thinking if putting on my rabbit’s sore hocks while waiting for a vet appointment, and maybe future mild ones.

I’ve never heard of it being used on sore hocks so I can’t advise based on experience. On wikipedia it says there are some concerns about the preservatives used in it. So to err on the side of caution I would say don’t use it. Try preparation H instead.

GSE is a great anti-bacterial cleaner (as long as it’s citricidal not all natural) but I would clear it with a vet before putting on a rabbit’s sores. I know it has been used by vets for birds for mutilation injuries, but bunnies are not birds so I can’t say it’s safe for them. My worry would be them ingesting it since it’s anti-bacterial (safely, so not toxic, but still) it has potential to kill good bacteria in the gut and that can lead to all sorts of health issues. Plus, the way it is made is chemical, so there are trace amounts of certain chemical by-products, including petroleum in certain brands. Whatever your vet ends up recommending, be aware it needs to be DILUTED before being put on anything.

I advise against it unless your vet says its okay. I recently read an article about how using essential oils and extracts can be very harmful or even fatal to rabbits. A lot of things that are okay for humans or dogs are not okay for bunnies.

There are other things you can use, like K&K suggested: Prep H, or Bag Balm.

Thanks everyone. I have never heard of Bag Balm. I think I’ll try that instead.

EMRabbits-Bag balm is a great product that was developed for use on Cow utters…It’s what I used when Bud had an issue with sore hocks…they were only a little red but not open at all…Not sure if it would be recommended on an open sore…

Yeah, probably best to not use Bag Balm on an open sore. If they are just red, Bag Balm is great. You can get it at farm supply stores.
