So my mom has a 4.5yr old Netherland Dwarf named MoMo. Hes been relativelt healthy his whole life and lives by himself, no other pets. He has a spacious living area. Over a month ago he started developing an eye problem. My mom noticed one day that it appeared swollen and shut. They went to the vet who prescribed eye drops and ointment. It took a couple weeks but it did eventually go away. The other day she saw it was getting red again and today it is squinty. Not swollen yet, and she used up the last of the eye drops and is putting the ointment on it again. Any thoughts about why this might be happening?

Oh no, poor little dude. Did they check his teeth? Netherlands are notorious for having dental problems which can cause problems with the eyes as well.

If it's not that then perhaps he needs to see a opthamologist vet.

Could be a molar root problem too which can cause a blocked tear duct.

Agreed could be teeth. Other thought is jagged nails? While cleaning his face he might scratch it?

Sarita- if his teeth look normal could this still be an underlying cause then? My mom is really good about taking him to get his nails trimmed regularly, so I really doubt that is an issue. I'm thinking its more serious. I saw him today and his upper eye lid was a little red and he was squinty eyed then keeping it open then keeping it closed.

Years ago Spockie had a blocked tear duct which caused weeping and some slight redness, and his teeth were fine, so it's possible if she says his teeth are OK that it's confined to an eye problem. Spockie's eye duct blockage was chronic, and every few months I had to apply the cream (it melted into his eye from the body heat) until it was fine in a day or so. Yours sounds more complicated, however, not just weeping.

I would take him in to the vet again for another look, just to check the teeth while it's acting up, get a refill on the prescription and see if there is any chance of infection (or illness like a cold or allergy) going on. My vet had this blue light she used in a dark room to see the duct blockage which made her diagnosis definite. Maybe your vet needs to examine him more thoroughly this time since it's reoccurred.
