I came home from class tonight to find Tofu cold and stiff in his cage. At first I thought he was just sleeping....
I don't know what happened, I don't know where I went wrong. All I know is that it's been less than a month but he's already worked his way into my heart. I can't stop crying.
How can something like this happen? Where did I go wrong?

I am so so so so sorry to hear this. He was an adorable bun and I know you must be devastated. I would call your vet right away and him look, but don't beat yourself up. Sometimes, despite your best care and being a fantastic bun mom, these things happen. ((MAJOR HUGS)) |

So sorry for your loss -- buns seem to have that special way of working their way into our hearts quite quickly. And Cinnabun is definitely right -- bunnies are such fragile little creatures and despite all our best efforts and loving care they sometimes do pass without any signs. Definitely don't beat yourself up. |

I'm so sorry about Tofu. I'm certain it was nothing you did wrong. Often, when you've only had a new bunny a month you haven't had any time to learn about their true health situation. Many bunnies are born with things like congenital heart conditions, which don't show any illness symptoms, just take them suddenly. It is possible that little Tofu was born with an illness that she couldn't withstand. Please be gentle with yourself about this. {{{{{{Hugs}}}}}}}} |

Thank you all for the kind words. I'm just really really really bummed out. I was looking forward to a long life with Tofu, and couldn't wait for his hormones to settle down so he could really be a house rabbit. He had even started laying on the back of the couch near me and didn't mind being picked up (as long as I was showing him the view on the porch ) I like to think I gave him an awesome end to his crummy life. Going from 24/7 in a tiny cage with no interaction to having free run around an apartment, cats to chase, fresh greens every day, yummy hay, and a ball to play with...... I also took him outside on a harness a couple of times and he loved to sit out on the porch with the cats and nibble at my herb plants. I don't know if i'm going to get a rabbit again any time soon. I really want to, but Tofu was special. It's just not fair. |

Hugs to you. You did nothing wrong but love him very much. He was lucky to have found such a caring owner like you. I agree with you, it isn't fair :~( |

Binky free, Tofu. It hurts to lose a friend. When the time is right for you to be a bunny parent again, the right bunny will come into your life. |

Oh my gosh, I didn't realise your previous post was the actual last pics you had of him! I'm so so sorry, he was a beauty. I can easily tell from those pictures you certainly didn't do anything wrong. Like the others said, buns really are experts at hiding their sickness, believe me I know! He looked a very very happy healthy bun from what I saw. I'm so sorry, I can't imagine how painful this must of been |

I have to agree with TBpony -- when you're ready to be a bunny parent again, the right bunny will come into your life... just remember. You gave Tofu an amazing end to his life and you can give another bun that great chance at life also when you're ready! Definitely do not feel like it 's anything you did. And remember you always have the BB community to help you whether you decide to get another furry friend or not! <3 |

This makes me so sad to hear! I am so sorry! You at least gave Tofu the best last month of his life. You could just tell he was so happy to live with you. |

I know what you mean it's not fair. I lost my 16 year old cat two days ago and the sadness is so overwhelming. I know I need someone to talk to, if you ever do I'll be glad to talk to you. It would be nice to have someone to chat with. I don't know how old Tofu was but I know animals can get blood clots, sometimes for no reason, usually in their leg and they'll let out a loud wail or something and then their just gone. It happened to a cat at the shelter I work at and my grandma's cat. Usually they had some previous infection. It can happen to any animal. It's a pretty common death to unexpected deaths. I'm sorry you didn't get to properly say goodbye. |
