After reading SO much info on here, I’m a little confused.

I was planning to start out by seeing where my Boots (Flemish Giant) goes first, then putting paper in that area and wait and see if that’s his continued spot. Then I was going to get a 3 sides litter tray with hay on it, and put it in that corner. Does that sound like a good plan?

I would start with a regular litterbox, a very large cat size litterbox. Rabbits can jump, and young buns have no issue hopping into a box. I wouldn’t train him to paper because often times people like to use newspapers or phone books as toys. Getting him used to urinating on paper will confuse him too much when later you want him to have fun with newspaper. If he makes an accident, just clean it up.

How old is he, is he neutered yet? What size pen is he is?

I read that Boots is an outside bunny – he will be more difficult to litter train in that environment.

I read that he’s outside – does his cage have a wire floor? If that’s the case, it will be nearly impossible to litter train him. Litter training works when bunnies realize that pee is absorbed in one area, the litter box, and then they prefer to go there over the floor of the cage. If you have a wire bottom and everything falls through, they don’t see the difference in where they go.

If you do have a solid floor, then I would just get a very large cat litter box (since he will be a very large bunny) and fill it with litter, then put it in a back corner. He’ll probably use it, but if he doesn’t you can move it to where he does go.

Do you plan to neuter him? Unneutered bunnies often have poor litter habits, but they can still be mostly trained if you set the cage up correctly.

Also, as Sarita said, it will be more difficult if he’s living outside.

There is one other problem with putting down newspaper for Boots to go on. It does not absorb liquid immediately, which means there will be a puddle of pee at first and Boots will get wet, yellow feet. I agree that you should buy a large litter box and use that right from the beginning.

He is 6 months old. He’s not neutered. I haven’t measured his cage, but he’s got a large cage and large pen area to run around in.

He came inside last night for 4 hours to play with us. During that time he didn’t go at all. he has one place in his caged area that he goes (outside, as far away from his food as possible).
