Thumper is probably a little over 6 months old and in the last few days my daughter and I noticed instead of just the extra hair growin on the top of his head between his ears it looks like he is now growing a mane. At what age would it be fully grown or do some just grow in shorter than others?

Gabby is over a year old and she has a light mane that started coming in once she came to live with us. It’s not long at all. Will hers get longer or probably fully grown now?

I tried to look up these answers on the internet but it kept pulling up breeding sites and I can’t stomach reading their websites.

In general a bunny gets their full growth by about a year, but I have never had a lionhead. Lion owners, please reply!

Like with any breed, especially of unknown origin, there will be discrepancies between what is standard and what your rabbit might have. There are also single and double-maned lionheads. And some lionheads have full body fluff (looking almost more like an angora), and others just have the fringe around their faces. That’s about the extent of my knowledge about lionheads.

Thank you, I’ll take any info I can get.

Gabby’s fur is a little thicker than Thumper’s fur, but not what I would consider a long coat. Gabby’s mane is just enough to notice around her neck. Thumper’s right now looks just like Gabby’s but I suspect it may get a little thicker too. He has shorter, thinner hair than Gabby.

I would assume both of my buns are a mix of different breeds but gorgeous to their mama.

Wooly isn’t a lionhead but I can say that his adult coat wasn’t looking completely filled out until he was about 10 months old.

Spencer is I think at least part lionhead, he came to me at two years old fully fluffy so I have no idea when he came into his glorious hair-do, but his mane does get significantly bigger and smaller depending on how much he’s shedding. After his first shed, he lost so much of his mane that he looked like a completely different bunny!

From what I have read, there’s a lot of variability in their adult appearance, and some adults eventually lose their manes altogether. Hodari is just about seven months and she’s often changing her appearance. I suspect she won’t have much of a mane, though, because the changes there have been more slow and subtle. Her mane is getting longer in the back and around the ears, and that hair is softer than on the rest of her body, but she’s not growing any additional hair so far.

Lionheads are extremely variable since they’re not an established breed yet. Some have a double mane and are fuzzy all over, some have the normal mane with hair around the head and down the sides of the body, and some lose their mane as they grow adult fur.

Most bunnies that size are fully grown by 1 year, but often reach their full weight earlier. The final hair type will probably be apparent after the baby fur is shed out.

Yuki is a lionhead, and when we got her (about 10 months old) she had a tuft of hair between her ears, a bit of a mustache, and 2 tufts on either side of her tail (i call them her butt tufts). Now she is just over a year and I’m noticing that the hair between her ears is a little longer and is spreading to her neck. Also her mustache is definitely longer and fuller. her butt tufts might be a bit longer as well. Also I read that when bunnies molt, or shed, it should only last about 3 weeks but she has been shedding like crazy for a good month….and yet she’s fluffier than before! Perhaps she’s shedding her baby fur? I do hope the shedding stops soon, it’s getting a little crazy and I’m worried about blockage from hair in her gut. she doesn’t like being brushed but i am able to hand-pluck her daily. I’m interested to see if she gets any fluffier…I hope so

Mine are both lionhead crosses, and moulted in their manes when they were around a year old. That said, each moult their manes change at least slightly.

Thanks for the feedback. After Thumper came to live with me he was over 6 months old but not a year old. His mane and some “bangs” have started growing in. It looks like a little old man comb over. Gabby’s mane is still just a little longer than her normal hair.
