        Hey all!

So, I’ve been noticing for a long time, but recently become concerned with, my bunny’s urination.  It seems that she saves it up for ages and then decides once a day(ish) to let it ALL out in a several gallon leak.  Also, occasionally, I find a tiny puddle of dark brown liquid.  Has this happened you any of your sweet lil’ buns?

        Thanks so much in advance.

My bunnies pee a few times throughout the day and evening, but I know other members have mentioned that their bunny will hold it.

As far as the color — That can vary depending on diet, weather, meds etc.    The normal range is anywhere from yellow to dark brown and even reddish.

Check out these articles regarding urine pigment:

          http://www.3bunnies.org/litterbox_training.htm#color

           http://www.rabbit.org/journal/3-1/red-urine.html

What concerns me is the little puddles as if this is a new behavior, then it could be sign of a UTI.   Maybe she’s just trying to hold it, but where do you typically find the puddles and how big are they?   It could be a form of marking, but since I have dealt with the issue of a couple of little dark red puddles a couple of years ago with Jack, and it was more serious, I am always a bit more hyper aware.

Are there any other symptoms? Does your bunny seem to strain to pee?  Is her tail end wet and/or discolored?

My male rabbit will hold it if his litterbox is too dirty for his liking (after about 12 hours it HAS to be cleaned, or he will NOT use it) – then when I clean it out he bounces around me like a little kid saying “I gotta go, I gotta go” and rush to the fresh litterbox and totally soak it. He has a secondary spot he uses if the box is too wet (he doesn’t like to get it on his paws) beside the box, which once that gets wet is unuseable as well. He will not go in any other area, so I have to be very good about cleaning out his box and his secondary spot. Once in the morning it gets cleaned when I wake up, once at night before bed.

You could try once she uses it, cleaning it out and then see if maybe she’ll start using it more normally. But, I would keep an eye out for any sort of infection as well as litter box habits changing is a sign something can be up.

That’s a really good idea!  I didn’t even think of that.  My bunnies do the same thing.

Hey, thanks so much for replying guys!

Apart from the pee holding she seems totally normal!  And the little puddles seem to happen when she’s somewhere she isn’t normally so the marking may be right.  I might use my next pay check o get her a urine test anyways, for my own piece of mind!  I feel like she just likes holding it and trying to break the record for worlds largest bunny pee….I feel a little better knowing others bunniesdo similar things.

Thanks again for the advice!  I really do appreciate it!
