Is it okay to feed alfalfa based pellets as long as you are also feeding ample timothy hay? I can’t seem to find timothy based pellets very easily and when I do find them they are (no joke) 10 times more expensive. Both of my bunnies are rescues and have never eaten anything but alfalfa pellets and niether of them seem overwieght in the least. Also, I don’t want to go to all the trouble of switching over to a different food if I don’t HAVE to.

Both my adult girls get 1/4 to 1/2 cup of pellets each day along with timothy hay and fresh veggies. Again, they seem healthy but let me know if this is a big deal and if I should really switch.

alfalfa pellets are generally too rich for adult bunnies, and have too much calcium. But if you are only feeding tiny amounts, it should be okay if you can’t find timothy pellets. How big are your girls? Moose, my 4lb dutch, gets just under 1/8 of a cup a day of timothy pellets, which is more than enough for a bun his size.

Oh wow. I have two girls. One is 4 lb dutch like yours so I’ll have to cut back with her a bit. As for my other bunny, she’s 6 lbs and an utter piggy.

I was telling Monkey the other day that I should have named her Piglet instead of Monkey.. she was inhaling her pellets like she would never have them again

Right now, Petco is having an online sale, including free shipping for $60 or more (no dog/cat food/litter can be included for free shipping). Some of the prices for pellets seem pretty reasonable, at least by my standards. Also, drsfostersmith.com has permanent free shipping over $49, and there is a current sale on Oxbow pellets. It may seem like a bit of a high price point to reach, but you might as well look around and stock up on supplies for your buns and any other pets you have!
