Well here it is! (And yes I know the pics are horrible, but my camera is broken and the camera was scaring the chicks.)
The box they are in is 4 feet tall and I’m not sure the dimensions on the inside? Probably close to 4 feet times 4 feet. maybe 3 by 3, not sure but it’s big. I can sit inside and still have plenty of room for the chicks to run around me if I chose to sit in there. Here’s the set up:
it’s cut on the top and held together with clips.
when you remove the clips the flap comes down so you can view the chicks, feed and water them, or change their bedding. There is a light hanging in the middle a safe distance from the chicks and there are 2 safety ropes attached in case it fell it wouldn’t land on the chicks or hit the bedding and cause a fire.
Now here are some pictures of the chicks. The light makes things look really yellow, but oh well. More pics coming!
One of my girls:
More pics:
Now you see that white chick in the center of the pic below (the one that looks all yellow and is above the other yellow one)? That chick is a girl white leghorn. Her name is (drumrole please) Henrietta!
My little roo:
“You know who” will be so proud! Now, which one is Alice?!?!
Little roo looks like a Manny to me!
Now I’m looking for some names for my chicks.
There’s 1 named Henrietta. She’s (going to be) all white
1 named Nanny who is a Rooster (He’s the all brown one with a lot of white on his head.) He’s in the 6 photo. He may need a new name, because family members don’t seem to like “Nanny.”
we probably have 10 girl chicks and probably 2 more roos. Although their gender is still a little uncertain until they feather in a little more.
I’d love some name suggestions!
Manny would be a cute name.
Foghorn for the Roo! Like from Foghorn Leghorn
Cabury
Parsley, Maid Marihen, Henny Penny, Patty, Cluck Norris (stole that from a friend), Omelet, Sunny (as in sunny side up)
Buttercup (i’m a Princess Bride Fan), Chickpea or Sweet Pea, Clover, Custard,
Manny is the best name for any animal or person. But Henrietta isn’t far behind of course.
I think Rust Cohle and Marty Hart for the cockerells, but for the girls – maybe flower-names like Althea, Foxglove, Periwinkle, Mallow, Violet, Myosotis, Lily, Snowdrop, Marigold, Poppy. (Yay, I came up with ten pretty flowers in English!).
Or girls/women from various favorite tv-shows, like Carrie Mathison, Mildred Pierce, Nessa Stein, Robin Griffin. Or really old-fashioned old-lady-names like Prudence and Augusta, Winnifred, Berengaria, Concordia, Millicent etc (I THINK they’re old-fashioned names, not totally sure though.) .
Cutie pies!!!! What’s the story? Are these your new pets? Or are you just raising them.
My sister has pet chickens and they are just so funny. They really do each have their own personalities, which surprises most people (kind of like bunnies). Her chickens are all named things with “Belle” at the end. Clarabelle, Isabelle, Lulabelle, Jezebelle. Those are the only ones I can think of. Except Chicken Nugget. Named by the 5 year old.
Oh my god, how cute are they?! I want them!!
I like Gulliver for one of the boys. That’s all I got, sorry for not being more helpful… I’ll keep thinking!
You’re taking such wonderful care of them! What a bunch of spoiled little chicks.
They are soooo cute Moxie!!!
I think you need an “Alice” as well!!
PS-only on BB would one find a “Chicken Naming Thread”
They are too cute! I can just hear their adorable peeping noises.
Ok, so my one naming contribution…… Princess Lay-a (don’t know if you were ever a Star Wars fan).
Moxie, I wish this thread came with sound effects! It would be so peepy
I like bams idea of old-lady names. Gertrude, Ethel, Octavia, Mae, Irene, Helen, Hazel, Rose, Merle,Alice.
I like theme names also. So flower names or holiday names or musician/author/artists names.
No way do any of them look like a Manny (OR a Fieval)! Those names belong to two very special BB bunnies already.
Averyl is a good “old lady” name. It belonged to a special grandma, but I think it would make a great chicken name.
I like the name Gracie for one of the girls. I have no other names that come to mind. They are really cute!
LPT— The story? Well…Middle of winter… Cabin Fever… and online websites that sell chicks… (Don’t worry we’ve had chickens before.)
I like the names so far.
Has anybody seen the new Cinderella movie? Well my mother thinks I should name my roo “Kit” (The prince’s name was kit) and 1 of my girls “Cinderella”.
ARNOLD AND BORIS !!!
Wait never mind, I just remembered they’re girls (DUH! I’m supid )
Ummmm…. Patricia
I like the name Lulabelle.
I’m also thinking about Tobias (Those of you who have read the books “Divergent” “Insurgent” or “Aligiant” {<– probably spelled the last one wrong….} will understand).
I AM ‘SO’ PROUD!!! I am gushing….. lol!
How gorgeous is Henrietta!!! Seriously Moxie, I am so overwhelmed I am struggling for words (so unlike me, ha ha!) thank you! I know some people may find this silly, but do you know how happy you made me all the way on the other side of the world? I hope it’s ok to admit on your thread how much I adore you, but I think everyone already knows that, he he he!
My hubby came up with Bruce and some other stupid name, so lets ignore that now… lol!
Yes, I think one has to be named Alice, lol! And I have to admit, I like all the other suggestions made so far, especially yours. I don’t think you can go wrong….
PS – You could name two girls Carrie (after JR) and Debra (me) – our sitcom names??? Ha ha ha ha ha! And the boys Doug and Raymond, LOL!
BIG hug to you Moxie – you are so precious!
Edit to ADD – I have grandchickies!!! I couldn’t be happier!!!
PPS – The pictures are PERFECT Moxie!!! You do know I want my bed filled with baby chicks now…… ha ha ha!
And your off the hook Hazel – no need to name OUR cuddle bunny Henrietta, ha ha ha. (Yes, I’m still going to take Bubbles – but you OWE me!) LOL!
You need an Ophelia…. If you have a rooster he could be Homlet. ?
AH, you also might be interested to know about Henrietta’s story. The hatchery actually gave her to us for free, so that we could donate her eggs to the homeless and needy. How cool is that? Her eggs will be feeding the hungry! (with some help of our other chickens because she can’t produce THAT many eggs. )
I will hopefully get some more pictures up tonight. I am currently at the library, I walked there. Give me a point for exercising when it was snowing last night and this morning. (it’s only a few degrees above freezing right now)
Ooo, I love baby chicks!
Shakespeare, huh? There’s Kate, Bianca, Beatrice, Juliet, Ophelia…
…Cordelia, Miranda, Rosalind, Viola! Desdemona.
I thought I would post how the chicks will (should) look as adults:
The yellow chicks will look like this as adults: (first pic hen second pic rooster)
This is how the dark chicks will (should) look: (First 2 pic hen second 2 pic rooster)
This is how Henrietta will (should) look:
(I do not own the pictures. I got them off of the website for the hatchery. No copyrite intended)
CHICKS! They’re so adorable. I can just imagine all their chicky noises.
Just out of curiosity, how can tell which ones are the roosters at this age? Also, if you plan on collecting the eggs, what do you do with the roosters once they’re all grown? Do they get a separate enclosure?
MissG— Well if you are trained/knowledgeable you can by RoyalShopperApp” style=”border: none !important; display: inline-block !important; text-indent: 0px !important; float: none !important; font-weight: bold !important; height: auto !important; margin: 0px !important; min-height: 0px !important; min-width: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; text-transform: uppercase !important; text-decoration: underline !important; vertical-align: baseline !important; width: auto !important; background: transparent !important;” in_hover=”” in_hdr=”1″>check their “parts”. although Some breeds gender’s are born different colors. The dark chicks we have, the girls are black and white or very dark brown and white and the boy is light brown with extra white on his head.
Although for my yellow chicks (the chickens in the first set of photos) you can’t tell until they feather out if you don’t know how to check their “parts”.
Now that my yellow chick’s wings are all feathered, I think the one I thought was my roo is just a darker by RoyalShopperApp” style=”border: none !important; display: inline-block !important; text-indent: 0px !important; float: none !important; font-weight: bold !important; height: auto !important; margin: 0px !important; min-height: 0px !important; min-width: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; text-transform: uppercase !important; text-decoration: underline !important; vertical-align: baseline !important; width: auto !important; background: transparent !important;” in_hover=”” in_hdr=”1″>female. My 1 roo I was supposed to have may have been one of the 3 that died. But I can’t tell for sure until they get some more feathers. I hope he lived, I was really looking forward to have a roo of that breed. They are supposed to actually be friendly(ish) as roosters.
MissG— Now about the Roosters once they are full grown… We’ll only separate if we want to hatch out chicks for people we know who want some chicks. So we know they are “purebred” chicks. Other than that they will all just be together. We actually have more chicks coming in a few weeks. We have a huge coop planned that is going to be the size of MY bedroom, with nest boxes and an attached run. So they’ll all have plenty of space.
That makes sense. It didn’t occur to me that you could check their bits this young. You’ll have to post pics of their coop once it’s done, it sounds impressive! They’ll be living in chicken luxury.
MissG— Yeah, the hatchery checks them all the day they hatch and then ship them out. They (the hatchery) have a 90% guarantee to have been right on the gender.
I will post a pic when it’s done, but it won’t be “fancy” just big (and expensive! ). We’ve spent over $200 just for the floor so far. So we are buying the materials in parts, so we’ll have enough money to get it done.
I thought boys had “parts” and girls did not. It is similar to sexing reptiles. If there is something there, then it’s a boy. LOL
OMG!!! Henrietta is going to look amazing!
I hate to admit this, but why not….. lol! I thought all hen’s were girls and Rooster’s were boy’s???
PS – I am good with budgie’s (NO! Not smuggler’s…. ha ha!). Boy’s have blue above their beak and girls have brown. How easy is that!
LOL!!!
All hens ARE girls and all Roosters ARE boys though AH. What makes you think differently now?
Oh, and since Henrietta is the only chicken that will look like that, I’ll always be able to spot her in a hurry/know who she is!
OH!!! So what I thought was right – how cool is that! Now I’ve embarrassed myself (AGAIN, lol!) for no reason – bugga! Ha ha ha……
Good thing you can pick Henrietta out easily – I worry she is gonna be cheeky/a troublemaker……. LOL!
MM I just started reading Divergent! It’s really good–I wish I had more time to read!
I’m so jealous – I love chickens and your babies are adorable – cannot wait to see photos of them full grown.
If I didn’t live in a townhome I would love to have some chickens.
I always feel like chickens should have like, dignified-sounding people names. I guess to emphasize that you’re not going to eat them. I really like the ones RabbitPam suggested.
Here are some random pics of the chicks I took.
<— An adorable sleeping chick. <3
Henrietta guarding the chicks laying down from the “Evil Camera”.
One of our chicks.
That would be Henrietta saying ‘take a picture of ME!’, lol!
OR, is she just trying to be alert so she can get into everything (mischief) first??? Ha ha ha ha!
All of my family thinks that Henrietta and The brown one I’m holding in that picture are in “cahoots”. They are very naughty and will definitely be the “lead hens” when they grow up!
I’m so PROUD!!!
Lol!!! Naughty chooks! Ha ha ha ha…….
Ha ha ha, yeah. The brown one isn’t scared of human contact and will stand there and peck at you. Henrietta is more of the one who will put the other chicks in their place.
Bossy boot’s/chicky!!! Lol!
I picked out 6 names! Here they go:
Luca (pronounced LUKE-UH.)
Cayla
Ash
Mae
Jana (Pronounced YAWN-UH OR YAN-UH)
Em
LOVE them!!! Well done Moxie! BIG smile!
4 of the names were kinda a twist on the name of some singers I like. “Luke” “Calum” “Ashton” and “Michael”. They are TALL Aussie singers. (And they aren’t bad looking either!)
These are the ones 4 of the chickens will be named for.
LOL Moxie – that is so cool! Go AUSSIE!
PS – Sorry for not ‘clicking’! I do know 5sos and their music, but I didn’t know their names…. doh! I do NOW! Ha ha ha ha!
I thought it was cool to I could incorporate a name or two (Like “Mae” was suggested) and have it represent BB helping, and a band I loved.
I still need 2 more names though!
Ha ha ha, from left to right it’s Calum, Luke, Ashton and Michael.
Got it! Lol!!!
Sooooo…… 2 more names? If you get stuck, there’s always ALICE! Ha ha ha ha ha…….
Mae? I know there was Elly May from “The Beverly Hillbillies”….I kind of like that name.
I kind of like the name Floyd Smoot from “Petticoat Junction” too – heck Floyd for a chicken is kind of funny…don’t know why but it is.
I love “The Beverly Hillbillies”. That was a great show. I have never heard of “Petticoat Junction” though, is it an older show?
I believe it was around the same time as Beverly Hillbillies. And Green Acres too.
Just found this video on youtube about Petticoat Junction – it’s fun:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rA6kbSEmNU4
Moxie – we have a fat white kitty named Luca. I dunno where her name came from, she came with it.
Just some random pics and an by LuckyCoupon”> update!
We upgraded their brooder to an aprox. 8′ by 4′ closed in part of our porch. There is an XL dog kennel bottom in there for them to nest and plenty of space to run around.
All their feathers are starting to grow in! Right now they have their wing feathers, tail feathers and a couple on their backs.
Here is my roo (drum roll please) Niall!
Moxie — I love the little roo! In the first pic, he looks like he has a mullet!
Thanks JR.
We just got our 2nd batch of chicks! We picked them up at the post office. They all seem to be doing very good! Now all our babies are home! I’ll post some pics of them as soon as possible!
MORE babies???
EXCITED!!!
Here they are!
Those are chicks who came home today! The breeds are:
Welsummer
Light Brahma
German Spitzhauben
Speckled Sussex
And another one that I can’t remember right now for some reason.
Thats a lot of chicks to name! Adorable!
MORE chicks?! Well, I guess you’re going to have to use the name Averyl then! Hahaha!
Thought I would show you all the size difference between Our older chicks and the ones who came home today.
I do like that name LBJ, I think I’ll use it for 1 of my older chicks.
Young chick:
Older chick:
Wow, that’s a big size difference! They seem to grow pretty quickly.
Yay! I want to see a picture of Averyl!
They grow so quickly! The older ones are already starting to look like mini-adults.
The cuteness!
The cuteness!
They are starting to look like mini adults and they are only just under a month old!
