“Show standards” for Netherland dwarfs (which are arguably arbitrarily decided) clocks a nethie at max 2.5lb, though in reality some nethies can be larger due to natural genetics.

Weight aside, he does like look a mix– his snout is longer than what I expect from a nethie and the ears are also longer than expected. It is not unusual for people to…[Read more]

I have a relative that lives in utah, and she rescued a 7 year old female dwarf bunny, but cannot take care of it since she has dogs. She suggested I take her because she is very affectionate and i am also looking for a partner for my 4 year old, male bunny (Harry). I live in the mountains of Colorado, so not far from utah (I  drive there all the…[Read more]

    Hey guys,

I got my bunny 8 weeks old back in November, he’s now almost 4 months old. I noticed over the nearly 2 months that we have had him that he’s gotten pretty big fast; I’m a new bunny owner and just curious of what you guys think!

He was sold to us as a Netherland dwarf, we went for this breed for size as we live in a smaller apartment…[Read more]

You are playing with “fire” by allowing them to interact when they are not bonded — they could get territorial/possessive over the presents and a potentially “cute” event could turn into a fight with injuries. It would be safer to split the presents and present them to each separately.

So, it’s really hard to say whether you should give up or not, because that’s kind of a personal choice.

If one rabbit was injured badly, then I would say you should probably give up. I also went and re-read your other thread, and these cases where bunnies are getting along fine for a while and then suddenly fight are pretty stressful for…[Read more]

I will spend more time with them today, tomorrow, on Christmas Eve, and definitely on Christmas and see how things go. If they get really aggresive and seem like they are fighting more than usual, then I would think of seperating them. But if they don’t fight on those days, I think I would seperate them a day or two after Christmas, just in case.

I can’t really say or predict that. I would hate to say “sure why not”, and then have them fight on Christmas Eve.

oh like I said previously, normally I’d bond them in my mother’s office room but during the overnight session,I bonded them in my room which obviously was a turn off for them since they fought and so I separated them…keep in mind that they fought around 6 a.m today this morning,, then around 5 p.m,I tried to do the usual which is bonding them in…[Read more]

    1) Rabbits will virtually all, regardless of litterbox adherence, mark any new territory, especially if it’s relatively “vast” — it’s in their nature. They spread their scent to feel safe/secure, so the mere presence of poop in a novel territory doesn’t mean your rabbit isn’t litterbox adherent necessarily.

    2) You should have more than 1…[Read more]

Thanks guys! I will schedule an appointment to have him seen to as soon as I get back home. For now I’ll keep him close to his usual pellet amount and will monitor his digestion.

Additional detail on your situation is important — spay/neuter status of both rabbits, time since the spay/neuters, how long they’ve known each other, the history they have with each other, living conditions… many things impact the success of a bond, in addition to actual rabbit personality incompatibility.

Details aside, yes, there are some…[Read more]

I am also leaning towards not actually reducing pellets and considering some veterinary assessment/recommendations for treating potential arthritic pain which prevents him from eating his cecotropes. As @DanaNM mentions, reducing pellets can be a concern for elderly rabbits — in fact, some owners find it most medically needed to switch to a more…[Read more]

Is it okay if I separate them a day or two after Christmas? Because my family ordered them some treats and toys for Christmas presents and I want them to open their presents together.

As long as he eats hay in twelve hours, then I think it’s okay. Maybe you can encourage him to eat more of his hay by sprinking some herbs or pellets in his hay?

Ok thanks! That’s helpful. I think given he wasn’t getting pellets when you noticed the cecals, it’s prob more stress related. Perhaps traveling made him a bit more sore?

But with his size a 1/8 cup of pellets is probably fine. You could monitor his weight to make sure.

Hi! Yes sorry, to clarify: over the last few years he’s had a few uneaten cecals here and there, nothing too majorly noticeable. Only in the past couple of days has it been noticeable. The timeline went:

    • Moved bunny to Boston from NYC, not too stressful, but this kind of thing is always going to be somewhat stressful
    • Did not have pellets so…

My first pair did not like each other at first. They had a good first date, but then after that they would fight immediately in bonding sessions. I eventually did bond them after about 3.5 months, and they were madly in love. LOL

So, yes, most bonds are possible, they just take more time. Not every pairing will work out though, and sometimes it…[Read more]

Ok, so if the fighting was bad enough to cause an injury, then I think taking a break is a good idea.

Are their pens in your room? If so, then doing the bonding session in that room could have definitely been the problem.

Where was the last location that they did well together?
