DanaNM replied to the topic Help! Difficult bonding! in the forum BONDING 6 years, 4 months ago

Even though they seem to be doing OK, please do make sure they can’t access each other through the fence bars. Any nipping will set things back and I’ve seen some bad injuries to noses and lips from bites through the bars, that can happen in a flash.

If you can get a second x-pen you can create the space buffer I described to prevent the nipping.…[Read more]

Wick & Fable replied to the topic Why is my rabbit chewing his food bowl? in the forum BEHAVIOR 6 years, 4 months ago

Rabbits like to chew on things for many reasons. I think in many cases with food and water bowls, a lot of owners report their rabbit tries to toss it out of the way. Does this track with what you’re observing?

You can try to redirect that chewing energy to more safe toys. I don’t recall the safety of ceramic, but I imagine there could be paints…[Read more]

You could also do a few bonding sessions just to see if that re-solidifies things. Sometimes a car ride together can help settle things down.

Have there been any other changes in your household? New pets, roommates, cleaning products, etc? New smells can trigger things like this too.

Wick & Fable replied to the topic Ollie has Ringworm – Advice needed! in the forum HOUSE RABBIT Q & A 6 years, 4 months ago

Thanks for the update! Ringworm, in rabbits or humans, is notoriously difficult to get rid of, so long treatment courses is not uncommon and reoccurrence is also common. I think continuing to use what works is a good tactic.

Any discussion of doing both topical and oral treatment?

DanaNM replied to the topic How will getting a new bunny affect our current bunny's living conditions? in the forum BONDING 6 years, 4 months ago

How big is the current hutch? It sounds big? I routinely have done what you describe, where I basically tuned one giant condo into two smaller ones while bonding, but both were still of acceptable size. Then once they are bonded you can just reconfigure back to the giant size. She might be grumpy at first but she will be fine. 🙂 Expect some…[Read more]

DanaNM replied to the topic Bonding advice please? in the forum BONDING 6 years, 4 months ago

It’s very normal for buns to be annoyed and distrustful during bonding. Don’t worry, he will forgive you when it’s all over!

It is important to be able to pick up your bunny in case of emergency, so I encourage you to keep trying. It can help to confine the space a bit (like with an x-pen) if he is running away from you. It sounds weird, but…[Read more]

DanaNM replied to the topic Bonding Spayed female with new 8 week old male – advice!! in the forum BONDING 6 years, 4 months ago

    Hi there, welcome 🙂

You should wait until he is neutered, recovered, and his hormones have settled down (usually 2-3 weeks post-neuter is good) to start working with them. 🙂

DanaNM replied to the topic rabbit hemorrhagic disease in the forum HOUSE RABBIT Q & A 6 years, 4 months ago

If you are in an outbreak area or near to one, I would stop all outside access until you can get the vaccine. It really seems like access to the outdoors is the biggest single risk factor (80% of confirmed cases in a survey by Dr. Frances Harcourt-Brown were rabbits that spent time outside).  Marzipan will probably adjust quickly and start being…[Read more]

DanaNM replied to the topic UPDATE, please read: Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Outbreak in North America in the forum HOUSE RABBIT Q & A 6 years, 4 months ago

Not sure what state you are in, but the best thing you can do is contact your vet to see about importing the vaccine (there are guidelines on this on the HRS site). If you are in a state that hasn’t had any cases, you won’t be able to get it yet, but states with cases can.

Agree with Hazel, I’m a bit unclear on their set up. When you say they were re-united, where they separated for some reason? And do they live together 24/7?

There is a “bonding template” pinned in the bonding section. It would be super helpful if you could paste the form in your reply to give us some background on what you have done already to…[Read more]

DanaNM replied to the topic Too much hay? in the forum DIET & CARE 6 years, 4 months ago

Eating tons of hay is what we all hope and wish for! It should make up the bulk of their diet and available 24/7. So nope, never limit hay. Tell your bun to keep up the good work! 🙂

DanaNM replied to the topic Need advice on whether or not to keep my bunnies together in the forum BONDING 6 years, 4 months ago

    They are cuties!

The fact that they lay together is a great sign, but you should for sure get Totoro neutered if you want to bond them. He will try to mate with her relentlessly which stresses out the female and prevents true bonding.

Your experience with Nutmeg’s neuter sounds very unusual. How long ago did this take place? You may just need to…[Read more]

Agree with Bam, this sounds like an emergency situation, and most vets are taking emergency visits in the US (not sure where you are though).

Are you in an RHDV outbreak area? Info here: https://rabbit.org/articles/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/hrs_rhdv_v5.pdf

Bunnie2020 started the topic Dwarf lop or mini lop? in the forum HOUSE RABBIT Q & A 6 years, 4 months ago

    Hi

So I’m a bit confused whether my bunny Reggie is a dwarf lop or mini lop, I’ve always said dwarf lop as I presumed they were the same but turns out they are similar just different in weight.

I looked at the paperwork and all it says is Male Lionhead lop.

I have uploaded pictures and videos of him, one of them (with a black border) is from…[Read more]

Hard to tell from the description. If he’s still new he just might not be used to you and needs more time until he feels comfortable.
