Just to update; most recently I read this article which suggests putting a barrier between them in a shared zone to help cool the fighting, which I could easily do to keep Pumpkin safe without breaking the bond. Do you think this is viable?

She’s not eating more hay.  In fact, she doesn’t seem to be eating much of anything.  Also no poop in litter box yet today.

Is she eating more hay than usual? Hay eating typically impacts water drinking, since hay is the rabbit equivalent to saltine crackers essentially! Makes the mouth dry and makes them thirsty.

I’m so sorry for your loss. You did everything you could and, although it was short, it sounds like he had some really wonderful times with you that he wouldn’t have had otherwise. I’m glad the vet is making you a paw print to remember him.

Agree with Wick, sometimes in a trio the loss of one will trigger the remaining two to have some issues. The dynamics of groups are different than pairs, so you likely will just need to do some bonding sessions with the girls to help them…[Read more]

My first thought was syphilis as well. Other possibilities could be ringworm, or sometimes a respiratory infection will lead to fur loss around the nose and mouth due to constant wetness. But without any respiratory symptoms I think ringworm or syphilis are more likely.

Update: Bunson passed away this afternoon in the vet’s office. He had just had enough of fighting, I think. The fever was just too much for him. The vet is making us a paw print, and he will be buried in our back yard with our other loved ones.

He wasn’t with us very long, but he sure stole our hearts.

Rabbits do not really acknowledge family units, so them being sisters does not guarantee they’ll get along, especially after a spay, where a hormonal spike occurs during recovery. Admittedly having a hard time imagining it, but if you’re using Tespo stuff to create barriers/pens, that gets a green-light from me! Tespo has been most reliable as building blocks for the permanent pens and set-ups I’ve made for my rabbits! As long as it’s secure and can handle potential shoving/jumping/chewing from the rabbits, it should be OK!
