Unfortunately, there are long waiting times here, even for critical cases. I had an appointment with another vet, who thinks the issues are likely kidney related. Blood results from the first vet showed elevated urea, potassium, and creatinine, and the first vet’s x-ray also indicated kidney problems, but they didn’t recommend further action.
The second vet gave an electrolyte infusion and will give a second one soon to improve hydration. They said the hind leg paralysis is likely due to kidney toxins affecting the central nervous system, although E. C. may have contributed initially. My bunny boy lost 300 g in a month and is mainly skin and bones, especially in the back. He also had a front paw infection that the first vet missed.
He has been lying down most of the time for two weeks now, but can sometimes sit briefly, and one hind leg is weak. He’s really trying though to get up at times. Sometimes his hind legs are twitching. The current goal is to improve hydration and weight. He eats well actually and takes his medicine. However, gaining weight with kidney issues seems tricky I read. I was asked to also give him oats and critical care which he takes. In general, he does not like to eat much hay. Does anyone have suggestions to help him gain weight and perhaps to improve/rebuilt muscles? Any other advice on the issue is also appreciated. I’ve been doing some physio exercises but so far not much result.
