Hello friends and uh stuff (lol). So, on Saturday, I’m getting my bunny spayed.. and I am SO scared. My brother and my mom keep on freaking me out by saying that her tiny body can’t handle a drop of anethesia. Thanks, mom. I have a vet recommended by the SDHRS. They told me to bring her food, water, and cage. Which brings me with one question: do they want me to bring her x-pen, or the small commercial one that is suppper tiny? Since she will only be in it for 5 hours, and I most females after their spay don’t wanna move around, shouldn’t I bring her small cage? That is what my mom is saying, at least. I ordered some stuff from here to give to her when she comes back as a little apology for getting her surgery haha. But it is all for the better! Also, my bunny’s littlerbox is like… 2 feet by 1 feet. It was the only way to get her to use a litterbox. Once she is recovered, do you think I can get a smaller one without her losing her good habits?

        THE MAJOR QUESTION(S):

Should I bring her x-pen or small commerical cage? They asked me to bring her cage, but never specified more…

What should I expect when she’s home?

What should I do when I bring her home?

How long does it take for the stiches to dissolve?

How long will it take for her agressive/puberty driven hormones to dissapear?

Can I downgrade her litterbox size (to a regular sized one) without her losing her habits?

Will she do as many flops or binkies? (Not a very important one, but still) She did 5 flops and 1 binky in a 1 hour period yesterday since I gave her a dig box, and I feel terrible for taking her out of the mood and making her get surgery while shes so… happy and floppy and stuff XD

How will her attitude be like after the recovery? Will it be better, and how will it be different, if at all?

Thanks in advance.. sorry for so many questions!

I would take her small cage because as you said, she won’t be in it for very long, and she
won’t probably want to move much anyway.

When you bring her home, you should expect a grumpy, sleepy bunny with no appetite.

When you bring bunny home, put her in a clean cage, and make sure that there are no levels or anything like that to jump on and hurt the stiches. Keep her cage and litterbox very clean, and keep her warm, perhaps give her a bed. Buy your rabbits favorite foods, and make sure that she eats atleast a little. Newly spayed bunnies usually don’t want to eat, but do make sure she atleast eats a few bites. Let her sleep, and don’t bug her unless feeding, cleaning etc… Don’t handle her, and don’t let her out. Also, make sure to get some pain Meds from the vet.

I don’t know how long it takes for the stiches to dissolve, but keep bun confined for 7-10 days after her spay to recover.

It make take up to a month for her hormonal behaviors to subside.

I would think you would be able to downgrade litter boxes, but bunnies do like to lay down in their litterboxes, so take that into consideration.

Once she recovers, she will be the happy bunny she always was…. Flops and binkies!

I don’t really know what you mean about her attitude, but from what I have seen and heard, her personality will stay the same.

Sorry for that ramble, lots of info there…

You made a good decision to get her spayed. Bunnies are really good with surgeries and it really is a very small risk compared to the 80 percent chance of cancer of intact rabbits. She will do fine. (((((Good spay vibes)))))

Small cage, she will mostly be sleeping anyways

What should I expect when she's home?

Most bunnies are sleepy and unwilling to eat for a day or so. Make sure your vet sends her home with pain meds

What should I do when I bring her home?

Leave her be, mostly, to rest in a quiet spot but check on her regularly. You will have to try to entice her to eat and keep an eye on her poops. Check the incision every day for swelling, redness and/or bleeding.

How long does it take for the stiches to dissolve?

            Ask your vet

How long will it take for her agressive/puberty driven hormones to dissapear?

Usually takes about a month. Some bunnies don't lose all their hormone-related behavior.

Can I downgrade her litterbox size (to a regular sized one) without her losing her habits?

Bunnies like a big litter box, the bigger the better. She may disapprove of a smaller one.

Will she do as many flops or binkies? (Not a very important one, but still) She did 5 flops and 1 binky in a 1 hour period yesterday since I gave her a dig box, and I feel terrible for taking her out of the mood and making her get surgery while shes so… happy and floppy and stuff XD

I don't think you have to worry about that. I never noticed a decrease in energy/happiness after spay/neuter. Decrease in binkies/energy is usually more age-related.

How will her attitude be like after the recovery? Will it be better, and how will it be different, if at all?

I also didn't notice much of a decrease in attitude but my girl was spayed after she was 1. A younger bunny spayed will most likely lose some territorial aggression and improve litter habits. Most people expect a big personality change after a spay/neuter but it's really not that drastic.

Good luck and ((((Speedy Recovery)))) to your bun.

I was told it would take a month for my boys stitches to dissolve but if they get itchy to bring him and they would remove them.

Definitely take the smaller cage. She should be prevented from moving around a lot after surgery, and most offices don’t have room for large set ups.

When she get home, she may not eat right away. Just offer hay and some favorite veggies and keep an eye on her. If she’s not eating by the next day, call the vet.

Tough to say if you’ll be able to use a smaller litter box. Most bunnies like larger ones in general.

She’ll be a bit groggy and grumpy immediately after the surgery, but she’ll be back to herself soon. It may take as long as a month for the hormones to clear from her system and the adolescent behaviors to disappear.

                Good luck!

I’ve been home for 10 minutes, and she’s already drank water on her own and ate 1.5 raspberries. It’s awesome that she has been drinking without me having to force-feed! She has been falling asleep, waking up, and then falling asleep again! Since we had to go shopping for food after we picked her up, I got to watch her in peace for about 20 minutes. She hasn’t attempted to pull out the sutures, as they are under-the-skin. We have gotten some pain medication to give her 3 times a day until she is more active and less sore. She is currently stretching out on the carpet, which I think means she isn’t in much pain, since she wouldn’t be lamb-chopping unless she is content. Any suggestions on getting her to eat a bit more? I don’t wanna annoy her..I’m pretty sure is sleeping right now, as her nose has stopped twitching and her eyes are nearly closed haha.

From what I know, she’s doing pretty well!

She hasn’t pooped.. and it’s been 17 hours since the surgery! She has eaten, however, and I put some of pain medication in her pellets. She ate like, one piece.. but now she is asleep from the medication! She’s only been willing to eat treats (2 raspberries and a grape!) and I already gave her LOTS of sugary treats… I need help! How do I get her to eat some more? What should I do about the poopeh troubles? She’s relaxing at the moment.4

I’m going to call the vet into twenty minutes once they open.. I checked her incision and it barely has any oozing at all, which is a good sign. I saw Basil cleaning the wound, which sorta surprised me, since I expected her to pick at it. She just yawned (how adorable), and now she is drowsily grooming herself. I do, however, know that she peed yesterday. I syringe fed her a bit of water since after she got a dose of the meds, she didn’t feel like moving. I have her housed currently in a store-bought cage (one of the small ones). She hasn’t been moving much, so I bet she doesn’t mind the size either.

                          I’m scared as heck now…

                            Did you call the vet?
She does need to get some fiber in her, and ALL of the pain Meds. Could you make some pellet mush for her and flavor it with a bit of baby food or unsweetened applesause? She may be pooping a little, but eating all the poops. (((Vibes))) keep us updated

I am somewhat happy to report I found some poop in her cage. It has been 40 hours since the surgery. The poop is really small and weirdly shaped, but that is to be expected. She’s been eating lots and lots of hay this morning, but she isn’t AS keen on veggies and pellets. She’s drinking plenty of water. I got her to eat some romaine and parsley.

Guys I wrote that seven hours ago and didn’t submit it. She has pooped a ton. They are pretty small but still! She’s mostly eating the same and she’s done 2 flops since I came home from school. Sounds good to me

Hurray for poops! Nothing makes a bunny Mom (or Dad) happier than seeing poops when they’ve been absent.
