On Sunday Penny did not finish all of her greens- but she was out begging for Craisins while we watched a movie, so I did not think much of it. And then Monday she did not eat her morning pellets- but snatched parsely out of the bowl when I fed the bunnies their salads, so I did not think much of it. In the evening I noticed not only did she not eat the pellets that we left in cage- she only ate a little parsley.
So even though she was still active, etc- I picked her up and started to look her over- she had an ouchie on the right side of her lip. I enlisted hubby to hold her and I cleaned the crust off and mixed up some Critical Care. I force fed her some CC last night, cleaned the ouchie off (after feeding CC) and then put her back into her cage- and she immediately used the litterbox to pee. I could tell by tenting skin and from the water bottle level that she was still drinking and not dehydrated so I ripped up some greens and put some of the CC in a bowl for the night. This morning she had not eaten any of the CC, greens or the pellets that are still in the cage- so I took her to work with me. The vet says her teeth are fine and the only abnormal thing is the wound on her lip/chin which appears to be completely topical- not an abscess or deep infection. I am thinking that maybe one of the other rabbits nipped her- since I usually “herd” her up and down the stairs when she is out at night, she sometimes runs up to their pens and tries to cause a little trouble before she runs into her own pen.
Since she was not eating she was started on an antibiotic and Metacam- both of which she loves, thank goodness. And I force fed her again at work with some help to make sure she was getting some food in this a.m. When I got out of work this afternoon and brought her home, I gave her a small bowl of greens which she ate right away and she seems happier. I was not expecting that she would eat the greens so willingly- though she was not refusing treats yesterday- just everything else. So hopefully she will continue to improve. I think that her lip looks like it would hurt- but I would not have thought enough to make her refuse to eat anything other than treats. But she has turned around since 1 dose of the meds. I hope she eats hay and pellets soon- as she is not fond of the CC or being force fed at all- I even mixed some baby food in.
I have been so worried about my cat that just started insulin- yesterday was his first day and I watched him like a hawk. I feel like I almost missed something with Penny and I was just passing it off as being fussy- (She does not always eat all her pellets, and Sunday was grocery day so the veggie variety changed that day). Of course I am not as bad as my husband who is oblivious and thought she was just “not hungry” until I made him hold her and I found her ouchie. Either he has no clue what goes on with the pets, or he does not want me to worry. But I think I worry enough for both of us.
