My bf bought a toy for lola and turned out it has cat nip in it. It was located in the usual bunny toy

section of For Other Living Things. Now, I read a thread here, and some say that Cat Nip/ Cat Mint can be

toxic, but on binkys list of ok Veggies Catnip/Cat mint is listed as Ok….so I think we’re gonna keep

        the toy now…any other suggestions?

Catnip is in the mint family along with cilantro.  I would not really think it would be dangerous- unless you have cats…LOL.  When I bring in fresh picked catnip from outside my cats get all funny- twitchy and frantic.

I have never offered any to Cotton- because of the cats, and she won’t eat Cilantro or mint anyway.  But I am afraid my cats would be tempted to go in her enclosure or try to steal the catnip from her.  Cotton does not take any guff from the cats- so I avoid any conflicts over territory or food.

I was actually curious about this too.  I almost bought Layla a little ball that had catnip, but decided against it because I wasn’t sure if it would be ok.

KatnipCrzy is right…the biggest “danger” to rabbits with catnip is the cats. I put loose catnip on the floor and my two go rolling around and bopping each other in a drugged frenzy. I don’t let Shadow out when they are under the influence, but he does go and nibble the remains with no problems.

THATS FUNNY  “UNDER THE INFLUENCE”       I AGREE ABOUT NOT GIVEN IT TO THEM AROUND THE CATS CAUSE I KNOW MY CAT WILL ALMOST KILL FOR SOME OF THAT SWEET ADDICTION.

Beka, the cardboard scratching post are fine. But again, I don’t put it out when Shadow is loose. The one time I did, the poop and pee war was apocolyptic and the cats took turns all day laying on it just to make sure the rabbit understood it was theirs. They usually come with the catnip seperate so I have one w/o that Shodow loves to dig and chew on.

By the way catnip tea is very nice for people to drink and it is calming to dogs and people….go figure! But don’t leave you cup unattended with cats around…the tea bags will get removed from your cup.

here’s what our friend Dana Krempels had to say:

Catnip is a mint that is non-toxic to rabbits. However I’ve never known a bunny who didn’t find it totally disgusting. (“UGH! What is that CAT stuff you’re shoving into my face?!?”)

Other mints (except Pennyroyal and its cultivar “Chocolate” mint) and fresh herbs such as cilantro, parsley, kale, tarragon, oregano, marjoram, etc. are great for bunnies.
