Hey - Thanks to who ever mentioned giving their buns the cores of the lettuce.

I had always tossed the base of the lettuce after I was done de-nuding it, assuming Coco wouldn't like it.

Tonight, I finished ripping up a big ol head of romaine, looked at the bottom core and thought "Mmmm. Someone mentioned giving this to their buns to chomp on...I'll give it a try"

And Holy Tomoly. You would think I had just given her some exotic treat! She is in her bed Crunching and Munching and just destroying the lettuce core! I have to asume it feels good, a bit firmer than normal lettuce and nice and juicy at the same time.

So, I can't recall which thread, and who - But Thank you - seriously. She is having a great time, and I was just throwing them away all this time....

mine love that part. for a long time i would throw it out when giving their veggies, but now they get the whole thing. it's also nice b/c when Mike and i have romaine salads (our fav lettuce, iceburg=ick!) i give them to the buns as well as a dinnertime treat... virtually no waste... lol! i run mine under the cold water and move the remaining leaves around to flush out any dirt that is in between them...

Hmm... i guess i make salads different from most everyone else. I pull off one leaf at a time to rip up so the core comes with the lettuce over time... no core left..

I know they love it! I usually save them for Lola because I feel bad when the others are eating their pellets and she doesn't get any and she really chows down to some serious nom nom

My Bunny Burrow is full! Pringles & Toby, Daisy & Lola, and my senior citizens Hershey & Simba.

i don't have time for one leaf at a time bunnyliz...lol! i take the whole bunch, rip it into thirds and throw it all in the salad spinner. when you go thru the sheer quantity of greens that we do, it makes more sense that way.

You give them the whole thing? I tasted the core and it was nasty and bitter...

Yeah, Dandelion leaves don't do it for me either, but she acts as if they are the most delightful thing EV-AH!

She ground that baby down to the nub - There was a sliver of the bottom of the core left in her cage.

And I do the same as you Beka - Grab the head of lettuce - twist and rip ( no washing Yet)...then into the "salad container" until I pull the hefty handful out for washing right before feeding...

But from now on, she gets the cores after the head is used up.

And I only have the one rabbit, but she goes through 1 head of romaine, 1 head of read leaf ( or other leafy bunch like dandelion/chicory), 1 bunch of parsley and 1 bunch of herb every 2-3 days depending on her appetite.

I assumed that was normal for her - she is a little bun, just over 4.5 pds, so she doesn't get more than 1/8th cup of pellets, and unlimited tim-hay/blend....and the massive salad.
Now with more cores.

K&K- please tell me you haven't tried hay and pellets!!! I know a bunch of us have admitted to trying papaya tablets (ick! still can't believe how much better they smell than they taste!).... so far I've managed to resist trying the hay and pellets though to see what they taste like

Actually I have tried all of the things that Fern eats...

The pellets are way nasty! All dry and yucky tasting! I do not recommended tasting them...

Hay is not bad tasting but it kind of gets stuck in your throat, I wonder how they eat it so fast without it getting stuck in their throat.

And Fern also eats her litter sometimes,(yesterday's news) so curious me had to see why she ate it, if it tasted similar to the pellets, no, they were dry as well, but had a papery taste and kind of turned into mushy paper after made moist.

Yes, yes I already know I am a weirdo, I am just too curious for my own good. I have even tasted my dog's food... but, I was not silly enough to taste the Fish food, the smell of fish food puts me off, so... Also if someone tells me not to touch something, I have an unbearable urge to touch it, stuff like that.

LOL on the taste testing, My Sister In Law has a dog that she consider's her kid, she will try ALL food and treats before giving to him.

While we are on the subject of lettuce and salad..........does anyone have any good suggestions out there of how to keep it fresh longer?  What is the best way to store it?

I want to order some of the Papaya tablets for the buns but I will definitely be giving them the lettuce core's now.

I always give mine the cores of heads of lettuce. I cut them into quarters, and they love them. They are super crunchy, and I think that is what the bunnies like, particularly Deanna.

this is always the big question...

what has worked for me, is wrapping the veggies WHOLE in paper towels and storing in my veggie drawer in the fridge.  i usually buy 3-4 heads of romaine, 3-4 heads of other lettuce, 3 bunches of greens, and 3 bunches of herb (this is for two buns for 6 days.)  i was getting annoyed with having to pull out several rolls every day tho, so a few weeks ago i tried something different.  i lined up 6 single squares of paper towels on my counter and i divided up the veggies right from the store.  FOR EXAMPLE: on each paper towel goes 1/6th of the collard greens, 1/6th of the parsley, 1/6th of  the romaine, and 1/6th of the escarole.  i then roll up each day's worth of veggies into another paper towel, and i'm set to go.  i don't wash right from the store.  i wash after i tear the veggies up and i use my favorite kitchen item EVER... my salad spinner!

i'm not sure how much LONGER you want to keep it fresh?  6 days is the absolute limit on freshness, at least in my fridge.  i've read that if the veggie is not in a condition that you would eat, you should not feed it to your bun.  esp. with their sensitive digestive system.  i think more frequent trips to the store is preferable over keeping veggies for a long time and they are less than fresh...

I rip the greens and place them ( not yet washed) into these big rectangular Ziploc containers. I find that the salad mix I rip lasts for three days ( maybe 4 , but rarely) - so two giant handfuls morning and evening.

I wash it right before I give it to her. This way it doesn't get soggy in the container.

And I go shopping a couple times a week - maybe 4 on an average.

I find it's better for her AND us - I pick up enough for three days, so everything stays fresher.

Wowee, that is a lot of shopping! My mom dreads going to wegmans once a week.

Also to keep them fresh, or make them fresher, you can put them in cold water if they are looking droopy and they will perk right up! My mom used to do that with our salads.

I used to only shop once a week when we lived in New Hampshire, but I go alot more now that I live in Montreal.

Its a funny thing about cities - everything is RIGHT THERE, so it isn't uncommon to buy things in small quantities.

Thanks for the tip, and also the paper towel idea is a good one also.  I live out in the country and unfortunately especially with gas prices I can't get to the store NEAR as often as I want to, infact I have been considering growins some of the herbs and stuff inside in pots and letting them free graze.
