My 12 year old bunny, Buttons, Has recently passed away… So of course to fill the gap in my heart, So i picked out Butterscotch, Buttons was a lop rabbit so i wanted a regular-eared rabbit (straight back ears) so i picked her and she seemed the healthiest, Im not sure what ear type she is… When i play with her ears (she lets me) i can put them down and they stay down, but i can put them up and they stay up… Shes old enough to tell if shes a lop or not, i just wanna know. I can provide pictures if needed.

          Please do post a picture.

Rabbits with upright ears can put there ears all the way back (usually mine do this when they are nervous, scared, or annoyed).

Pictures would help-but however her ears are when you aren’t playing with them is likely what they are

If you upload them to a site like photobucket, then you can just drag and drop them here.

                            He’s a helicopter. <3

Helicopter ears occur either simply from poor breeding of lops, or from cross breeding lops.  They are super cute, even if helicopter ears are considered a “fault.”

Learned a new thing from Eepster as well!

lol I always thought helicopter ears were just a different word for lops.

Hyena, I concur with Eepster. One of my Holland Lops has the same helicopter ear ‘problem’. If she were a show bunny, it would be a fault, but she’s just my little fluffster, and I think her ears are the most adorable type.

It’s not an official term.  Helicopter is just used by pet bunny people to describe bunnies that are only partially lopping.  It is especially descriptive for the ones whose ears stick straight  out parallel to the ground, such as the bunny in this gif I found.

Since it’s not an official term, there are no strict rules about when to use it.
