I have been showing rabbits for over a year now, and bought two Netherland Dwarfs. I felt them today, and looked at their food troughs, and they haven’t been eating much. Probably from new feed, but I’ve never had them go a couple weeks without eating this much. I can feel their bones as if they have worms, but I don’t think that’s the case. I don’t know what to do. I don’t usually feed hay, only pellets. Hay if I need to coax them, but they won’t eat that either. Any tips on how to get them to eat?

Why wouldn’t you feed them hay? Hay is a very important part of a bunny’s diet. As for the pellets, what kind are they? Do you know what they were eating before? Can you get what they had before and then mix it with the new pellets?

We’ve just never fed them hay, along with everyone else around here. We just never really have. The pellets are Purina show pellets, and I don’t have access to the feed they were on when I bought them. The feed is hand mixed at a store that many breeders use, but no delivery, and about 8 or 9 hour drive, and way too expensive.

If I’ve learnt anything from this site its that bunnies MUST eat regularly, WHATEVER it takes, in order to survive or bad bacteria in their tummies will kill them.
What would they jump through hoops for? Banana chips? A few raisins? Something…! Good hay, fresh grass (safe from pesticides)… if they don’t jump on fresh grass then surely something is amiss….
Get their old feed again and introduce slowly the new feed mixed in….
Good quality hay or grass should be UNLIMITED with all day & night access to it.
Don’t wait !! – Rabbits are not like cats and dogs where a day of not eating is OK – they will be in danger.
Please check closely and make sure they are eating and keep us updated.

I would encourage you to offer them a nice grass hay. It’s important for their teeth and their digestion. Plus a lot of bunnies will actually prefer the hay. I’m surprised the breeder didn’t send you home with some of the pellets they had been feeding them. It’s always a good idea to mix old food with new food to make the transition smoother.
