Hi friends,
I don't know where to begin so I'm just going to start. Layla had the op and it went really well. However she developed an upper respiratory tract infection. It didnt seem too bad cos she didnt hav any nasal discharge. She was on anti-biotics and doing well. At the same time we were planning our trip overseas and i was looking for a bunny sitter. After much stress we found the perfect guy. Everything seemed great. layla was on the mend and she had a fabulous guy looking after her. We left for overseas. The bunny sitter called a few days later to tell us that she had been sneezing again but it didn't seem too bad, and he would be in touch with our vet. Then on friday the 26th sept I received a call from our vet. She told me to sit down and I knew it was bad. She said our sitter had come in on friday to fing Layla weak listless and very ill. She had discharge from her nose and was unresponsive. She hadnt pooped during the night or eaten. She was given anti biotics but our vet was worried. She sent her home. When they got home, she was very unresponsive. So she was rushed back but by the time they gotto the vet she had died. all i have echoing in my head is our vet saying, "i'm sorry, she didnt make it".
I am heartbroken, and so far away...ive told everyone to leave her cage and ill clean it when we get back - not sure if thats such a great idea.
I am so sad, i've lost such a special little soul, and i just dont know how to cope. |

Oh, I am so sorry! I know it's terribly hard for you. It will take awhile to get over your grief - just cry as much as you need to, it's okay to do that.

They really are such fragile little creatures. It seems like the sitter and the vet were on top of the situation, and it was just her time to go. Hugs to you. |

oh no...this is heartbreaking... ...I'm so very sorry for your loss!! especially since you were not there. all kind of things go through your head...I think its a good idea to tell them to leave everything so YOU can 'clean up'. it will help you with your grief. this is very hard to cope with...poor layla!! please let me know if there is ANYTHING I can do, OK?! sending lots of hugs your way to help you feeling a bit better...
I don't understand what 'binky free layla' means either...you are not alone...

BTW, "Binky Free Layla" is a farewell saying, hoping that Layla will "binky (jump happily) free (without reservation)" across the Rainbow Bridge... |

I am so sorry for your loss. How heartbreaking. It does sound like the sitter did the best job in making sure Layla received vet care. And it's true, rabbits are just so fragile, sometimes, even when you do everything right, they don't make it. Like someone said, it for some reason, is just their time. I know it hurts though and I am so sorry for that.
What I understand what Binky Free implies - is peace and binkies on the "other side" Free from suffering, free to now binky in the after-life. (A Binky is a jump for joy that rabbits do.) And so when someone says "Binky Free", no matter what religion or spirituality you hold, even if someone is agnostic or atheist, it's just a wish for the best for whatever happens after the body expires.

I saw you asked what binky free means...It means 'binky free' at the rainbow bridge. Here's the poem.
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I know that it's especially painful knowing that you weren't there. That has happened to me....i.e. our class hamster died overnight and our home fishtank died over a vacation (I'm sure that doesn't compare to a rabbit). Anyway, it made me question wether I did the right thing hiring a pet sitter and if I hired the right one etc.
I take comfort that there is always a reason and a plan...I accept that and believe that it was true in your case as well. Again, I'm very sorry. Please let us know if there is anything we can do. If you feel that you want to be the one to clean out the cage, then that's what you should do. Everyone grieves in their own way, so do whatever you feel you need to do to feel connected to Layla. |

I am so sad to hear of this and you are in my thoughts. That you were away must make it extra difficult. The pet sitter does sound very good and took control of things very quickly. I remember you took quite some time finding her a good vet too (you are in Israel?). So despite being away, you did give her the very best care by having these competant people care for her in you absence.
I remember those first pictures you posted of the beautiful girl. I was quite taken by her colouring, she looked like a little live soft toy! Gorgeous! I'm certain she'll hold a special place in your heart. Take comfort that Layla is now happy and healthy and her dear little soul will help to heal your own.

laylaover I am very sorry for the loss and I cannot imagine the pain you must be feeling right now. Like it has already been said, even if you do all the right things, they can still pass because they are such fragile creatures. Being far away does not help but just know that she was well taken care of in her last hours here and understands that you could not be there. Sometimes I find that the cleaning up part helps one cope with the loss, it is part of the healing process.

She was such a beautiful, sweet girl. It sounds like your vet and bunny sitter did everything they could. Very heartbreaking for you,still.

This is just so sad. One of my cats died when I was in Edmonton, she was staying with my mom. It was so weird because I knew my mom was taking her in to the vet because she hadn't been all that well and I called her cell phone to say "don't let them put her down!" but got her voicemail - turned out my call came just as they were giving her the injection. She was in the last stages of liver failure and wouldn't have lasted much longer. I know it's very difficult not to be there, and there's a strange kind of emptiness that you just can't put your finger on but nothing seems really right. But you can take some comfort in knowing that she was obviously receiving excellent care while you were gone, and they did everything for her possible, and she knew that you loved her very very much.

I'm really sorry to hear about your Layla. She had a special place in my heart because my bunny is also a Layla. You loved her so much and she knew that, and had a wonderful life with you. It's so hard when thye pass away and especially hard if your not there. You did all the right things but it was her time to go.
