hi guys, today i noticed hershey is making a funny noise. you can bearly hear it..only when there’s no noise in the background and i’m right near her do i hear it…i thought it might be growling but im not sure as it is really soft. sounds like a little grunt or burp.

anyone heard this type of noise from their buns?

also what does rabbit growling sound like? is it loud? i know she wasn’t happy with me for some reason beacuse she thumped at me as well…..

Hi naz – i had a quick look at your profile and see hershey is not spayed. Is this still correct? I think she’s pretty young isn’t she?
Reason I’m asking is she may be hitting teenage hood and becoming territorial. When you go into their space they’ll let you know they’re not happy. Some buns can add a little grunt or tooth noise with a thump. It’s really hard to describe a growl. Whenever I try demo it to people, I can never do it! Usually when they growl they might lunge a bit to or run at you. You’ll know it when you hear it. She might be giving a little grunt to give you the message. She may still be perfecting her growl !!

All I know is when Jersey hit 4months she would find little spots to hang out, under the bed or behind curtains, and didn’t like me trying to get her out one bit. That’s when she started growling. She still uses it to get me to back off!

Think I know what you mean now. It’s been a while since Jersey has been mysteriously freaked by something and done the thump thing. I do remember now thou that there was a noise too. A short noise that she repeats- is that what you heard? Like a noise you can make from down in your throat if that makes sense?!

Hi Jerseygirl – yes that’s exactly the type of sound she makes! from the back of her throat it seems..a little grunt.

so it means that she’s scared? hmm. well i know she was scared because we were mowing the lawn yesterday and she gets scared of that. so maybe that’s what it was. never heard it before so that’s why i was curious.

anyway she is getting spayed this friday!

I have a little bunny that does a little grunt if I get too close, or if I startle her. Is it a short grunt, or a consistent noise you are hearing? If it is more consistent, it sounds like it could be tooth purring or grinding. Tooth purring is a very faint sound that shows pleasure, while tooth grinding is a louder noise that means the bunny is in pain. I myself have not heard the tooth grinding in pain noise, but I have heard from others that it is a very loud and frightening sound, and you can really tell that something is wrong.

Mimzy will grunt at me if I come in to clean his pen too quickly. It’s almost a little, low “whuff!” Tries my patience, because I’ve had him for over a year now and we go through this every day, even though he is neutered.

You’d think he’d know by now that I am coming in to housekeep. ^_^ Silly bun.

But yes, it’s usually his way of letting me know that I haven’t knocked first. ~_~

Yes, i couldn’t say if Hershey was scared or not. You have to look at some of the other body language to know. But if she was not hiding away but sitting close by and thumping, I’d say she was PO’d as you thought. Sorry! I can never tell what set them off sometimes be it scared or sulky.

                    Good luck on Friday!

well i’ve done a bit of googling and found out that she may be “honking”. still don’t understand what it means when they do that though!

Huh! The sound you describe does sound more like a honk because it is a short sound, but I’ve always thought a rabbit honk or oink is the sound they make while happily running around.  First time I heard this was when Jersey was running around the table and it sounded like she had creaky joints or something!  More of a hum I guess. I may have mislabelled this as honking. ???Anyone???

We need someone to do a bunny recording to compare the noises!

A honking hummy like short sound  can mean bun is happy.  If bun is running and binkying it means bun is happy. Some hum/honk like when they are happy to see you or when you are petting  bun.

If it is an unneutered male and bun makes the noise while circling you it is probably the mating ritual that is taking place.

If i bun is growling at you the head would be up and out preparing to bite you and the tail would be out. Unspayed females can be very territorial around their cage. When Cotton grunts his head is up in a warning to stop or I will box and bite. The language of lagomorphs might help. I think it is a website. It shows bunny positions and noises and what not.  That might help you figure it out.

Honking can also be a sign of mating. She may want ta be your girlfriend.

I knooooow that replying to old threads is a big no-no, but I don’t know how else to post this and reference it.

Regarding kokaneeandkahula’s post of bunny sounds above——

I have mentioned that Phenom has been behaving aggressively, and squealing/growling JUST like the bunny in the YouTube video. (second link) (she will be spayed in January – still searching for a vet who intubates during surgery complications) and it’s only limited to when she is in her cage. Her “princess castle,” lol.

When I leave her door open and put her ramp up, she is sweet as pie. She zooms, binkies, nuzzles, bonks, and licks my face while I watch tv at night.

But the second she heads back into her cage if I so much as change her water bowl she produces those heart wrenching SQUEALS.
It is breaking my heart – is she in pain or very frightened? It just doesn’t make sense to me because of how affectionate she is when not in her cage.

ps she zoomed up toward the computer when I played the Simon sound! — I had to Google it tho, I think the Simon link in this thread is broken

Some rabbits are just more vocal than others and they don’t like you messing with their stuff when they are around. I think it’s more anger than anything if she’s growling at you messing with her stuff.

I was assuming anger/frustration too since females get so territorial. But the squealing sounds like a nervous breakdown and that bugs me!

It probably is anxiety. I would try to not mess with her stuff while she’s around.

She’s been improving but still does it. I’ve been sitting down beside her cage and when I reach in for her water bowl, I pet her head with my other hand and gently rub her ears. I don’t do it too long so that she wants more. I strongly feel it’s a territorial thing that is linked to raging hormones because she never did this prior to about a week ago (she is 4 months old). I would like to hope it is not fear – she loves me! She just hates being held – by anyone.

I’m hoping after she gets spayed this will abate….

It could mean a number of things. Hannah grunts a bit when she’s eating or is content. Otto has growled at me a couple times and it was very quiet and not much more than a honk. Their sounds can be so quiet that it can be hard to tell, but body language will usually give you an idea of what they’re thinking.
