Finding food and avoiding danger are the two top instinctual behaviors. Being able to sniff out food, and smell a predator keeps them alive, and being in a constant sniff alert betters their chances. Now even though they may not need to be so alert, those are things that may just be hard wired in.

Plus, since their eyes aren't the best, their nose is a big connection to the world. So they sniff like we see. All the time.

I heard that bunnies use nose twitching as a way of communicating!? My boyfriend "talks" with our boy bunny Edward. He twitches his nose and then Edward does it back (the same amount of times). When I try it though, Edward usually just looks confused. Maybe my boyfriend is a bunny whisperer!

Jellyrose - you are absolutely right, and I actually did that with my bunny about a year ago - the site the Hedi posted suggested doing that.  I can't believe I forgot all about that.    It's such a fun thing to experiment with.
