I am no "hopping" expert, but I just imagine that since bunnies are prey animal, their powerful back legs push them off the ground so they can get quick bursts of speed, as well as leap in the air, and be able change direction in a blink of an eye. They can basically use their powerful back legs to push off in many directions. A great method to thwart off predators.
