Ok, since everyone on here has been so helpful already, why not add one more question?! What do you guys do to get rid of the “Bunny smell” in your houses/apartments? The smell used to be a lot worse in my apartment, so I started cleaning the litter box more often and then the whole cage more often, but what else can i do?

Well I have no bunny smell at all. I clean the litter box daily and clean his room daily. The only thing I can sometimes smell is a faint smell of hay. If you keep your buns room really clean you should not smell anything. It’s just part of my routine now. I am a neatnick!

I’m with Knowlton, I don’t really have a bunny smell other than hay. But, I clean out the litter box every day.

                Hi allen,

buns have not been neutered or spayed often have much stronger smelling urine. In general though, bunnies don’t smell strongly.
I change the litterboxes at my house every 5 days and use aspen supreme, which helps with odor. It also can help to make a spray bottle of vinegar diluted with water (50%) to use for cleaning up pee or other bunny messes.

                  Hey Alan,

I’m with Knowlton and the rest of u guys.  I don’t have a “bunny” smell either.  I also use the “Aspen Supreme Pellets”.  Also I use “fresh results cage cleaning and deodorizing spray”  I just bought it from Wal’mart.  I clean her litter box about once every 2-3 days.  Then I use the cage cleaner to clean the litter box before I put in new litter.  Also I make sure I wash her Soft toys, etc that she keeps in the cage about once a wk.  I hope this helps.

You guys are all very helpful! I’m guessing she pottied somewhere and I haven’t noticed, so next step: find the stain!

I worry about those kinds of pet sprays since bunnies lick and nibble on most everything – so always use vinegar / water to clean up messes. I do use nature’s miracle on carpet stains though…

hope you can find the stain! is she spayed yet? if not – that may be the strong odor.

I also ditto the vinegar and water. I find that really can cut the “amonia smell”   Also, if you have carpet, be sure to test Nature’s Miracle on part of carpet that is hidden as it can cause discoloration on some carpets (I found that out the hard way – it says that on the directions, but I didn’t pay any attention)

There are also ultra violet lights that are meant to help you spot urine stains. These lights are found at many large petstores.

Also, to ditto what gravehearted said bunnies that haven’t been spayed or neutered have stronger urine smell. I can ALWAYS tell which bunny has yet to be spayed/neutered at the shelter. I can go from pen to pen to pen, and then WHEW….I’ll say….”this one isn’t neutered yet eh?”

Your bunny is also reaching sexual maturity and this will make her mark more, which may make this time more smelly.

Nope, she’s not spayed yet. I’m waiting until I know for sure she is oldest enough because the closest vet that specializes in rabbits is 3 hours away! I found the pee spot!!! Haha, I cleaned it up and it came right out so that is good! i also went online and ordered some “Nature’s Miracle” cleaning wipes and deoderizing spray…Thanks for all your help!!! Now I won’t be known as the girl w/ the smelly bunny apartment!

My bunny smells like a mixture of hay and lettuce. I do vacuum a lot though… that cuts the hay smell down a bit.

yeah those hidden bunny piddles can do it. my buns smell like hay I guess. sweet hay. smell.  i have piddle spot on my couch soemwhere and I have to find it tonite to spray b4 bed adn on my squishy beanbag footstool. too.  I put odoban on it and shout stain remover it worked. and this is a spot bun is not allowed anymore. except when he is on top of me. otherwise I clean everyday usually sometimes every other day and no smell.

i have a 50 hole rabbitry. .  the smell can increase very quickly.   the absolute BEST way to get rid of odor is use wood stove wood pellets as bedding in the rabbit tray.  they are hard pellets and expand when liquid hits them.  they virtuall mask all odor – even from several hundred rabbits.  almost all breedeers that i know use these for that reason.  i controls the harmful amonia buildup, keeps perfectly dry pans, and eliminates all odor.  you can get them at any feed an supply store.  murdochs has some for $6 for a 40 lb bag.  you don’t need to get the expensive bedding specific kind.  just get the regular pellets for wood stoves.

also you can use a rabbit disinfectant called vanodine to clean the pans.  this kills odor causing bacteria, breaks down calcite deposits and disinfects while it cleans in one sweep.  you can get it at vanodine.com  it kills bacteria, viruses and fungus and is great for all rabbit and animal enclosures.  you can even use it directly in the drinking water to prevent spread of disease in shared watering systems.

hmm i have never had a smell from my bun the only thing i can think is that you arent cleaning the cage and litter trays properly so try the vinegar and water thing and if your bun smells try giving him a rub down with a wet cloth and a good brushing off. should help
