Our new bunny Jasper drinks A LOT of water. We’ve been refilling his ceramic dish 2-3 times a day. I’m sure this is due to him eating unlimited pellets (he’s only 4 months old) and a prolific wood (an apple branch a day) and hay eater. He also eat some greens, but the amount of water, pellets and wood he consumes is truly impressive for such a little skinny guy. He has free roam of a small bedroom that really doesn’t have any place to hang a water bottle. I’ve been looking at watering systems, but I’m worried they would be chewed or knocked over by a bunny. Anyone had good luck with one? Or should I just get a bigger ceramic bowl? Or come up with a creative way of hanging a water bottle?

        Thanks!

It might be worth mentioning it to a vet if your rabbit is drinking an awful lot of water. I know typically a rabbits water intake should be about 10% of it’s bodyweight or 50-150ml per1 kg of body weight. So if he’s really drinking it all there might be something going on.

Otherwise I’d just provide him with perhaps another water bowl as opposed to a bigger one-so you dont have him jumping into the large bowl and soaking himself

I use one of these cat water dispensers. (https://www.amazon.com/Aspen-Pet-Bistro-Gravity-Waterer/dp/B009NV9FMG/ref=sr_1_17?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1477233906&sr=1-17&keywords=cat+water+dispenser) You can find it or things like it on amazon or any pet store that sells cat or dog stuff. Sorry for the long link, but I didn’t know how to describe it.

Thank you! I think I’ll try one of those cat water dispensers.

I’ve wondered if I should mention it to our vet, but really he seems super healthy. He’s very active, and just eats a ton. It makes sense that if your diet is vast quantities of pellets, hay and wood, and you love to run around in circles you would get pretty thirsty.

Maybe the real question is whether it is normal for a 4 month, slender ~3 pound bunny to eat about 3/4 cup of oxbow young rabbit pellets, a cup of greens, a foot long apple branch, lots of hay and drink probably 1.5 cups of water per day. I have a feeling he’s going to get a lot bigger quickly.

In my experience I have had good luck with bottles. So I think you should find a way to hang a bottle. So try looking on pintrest to find out how. Although if you do pick this you should keep the bowl there and keep the water bottle up at the same time so he can transfer.

He’s a growing boy and needs his food

The water intake sounds fine, I’d either get a bigger bowl, like a ceramic dog bowl, or use the water dispenser as suggested.
