I’ve just gone out do do a load of washing to discover mosquitoes everywhere in our laundry – I guess it’s that time of year.  I went a bit over the top with the bug spray trying to kill them all.  It’s an outdoor laundry, not directly connected to the main house, so I can spray out there without it getting to my bun.  But the mozzies will find a way inside, I’m sure…

Is there a safe way to kill mosquitoes inside/deter them that won’t bother Gus? I don’t want to spray bad chemicals near him but I’m terrified of him getting myxo.

I think some common methods that people use indoors include sticky fly papers (not sure if they work on mosquitoes though) in a place out of reach of bunny. You could also have some potted plants out of his reach that deter mosquitoes. Citronella plants, well out of bunny reach. Basil and lavender apparently also deter mosquitoes and are safe for Gus if he happens to get his teeth around them.

You could also use a surface spray or deterrent around the outside of the doorways where he won’t come into contact with it. You’ve obviously sorted out the situation in the laundry, but also just eliminate any breeding areas where water may be sitting. I know where I live it’s going to be a bad year for mosquitoes because of higher than normal rainfall. There’s also been a couple of confirmed myxo cases in my city too.

Yes, empty out all buckets and plant pots etc where rainwater gather, they are perfect breeding-spots for mosquitoes.

Some people use Advantix on their buns, it has permethrin, that’s an insect poison and a deterrent. The use on rabbits is not uncontroversial though. Mosquito-netting is probably the best way to keep the mosquitos out of your house. There is mosquito-netting that’s impregnated with permethrin, according to studies those are more effective for preventing malaria in malaria-ridden places.

            Are you in Australia/NZ?

Yes I’m in Australia. I can’t add any flywire/netting to the house as we rent But I’ll look into some plants that might help and for standing water – that will be tricky though as it’s a old leaky house. Will just have to hope for the best, I guess.
