        Hi everybun,

I cut down the pellets and veggies so my bunnies would eat more hay. They are now eating more hay than ever! However, both of their poo became darker than before, and one of them is having small and hard droppings that signals GI stasis. How can this be? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi!! Good job cutting down on pellets, as rabbits will only eat the pellets and no hay. How many pellets are you feeding? Hard feces is actually a good sign of digestion. Are they strung together with hair? Are they normal size? Many rabbits feces can range in color, and it sounds like your bun is not on the road to GI stasis.

Hi Lucy, thanks for your reply.

They get very little pellets now. Maybe a table spoon each. The poo is not strung with hair. The size is smaller than what they had before. I think it is on the small spectrum of the normal range. It is dense but I can still tear it apart.

I feed orchard hay due to allergies to timothy, so their poo was dark before. Now, the poo is almost black…

Do they drink enough? When cutting down veggies, the water intake will rise necessarily. Do keep an eye on how much they consume, maybe they’re still not adjusting their water.

It can be the change in poop size is temporary due to the change of diet, so it can happen for a few times.

I am glad you asked. They are now drinking more water than ever. I will definitely give them a bigger bowl to drink from.

Be sure to offer them fresh water everyday and keep an eye on how much they drink So that in the future you’ll know what is their new “normal” amount of needed water

Tiny fecal pellets can be a sign of GI stasis, but look for other signs. Because they are as interested in the hay as you said, they likely are not in stasis. Do they ever seem like they are pressing their bellies against the floor? How warm is it in their room? The size change is likely due to the dramatic change in diet. Be sure they have unlimited hay and water, and the poops should return to normal size.
