Yesterday, Louise was being her normal self. She was running and binkying and hopping on my lap for attention. She was sitting by my side, flopped, happy as ever.

But around 8 or 9 pm, she started acting kind of lethargic. At first, since she was just lying next to me anyway, I thought she was just relaxed and sleepy. But she got up to hop over to her litter box, and I noticed she was moving slowly and seemed a little stiff.

So I went over there to check on her. She “melted” into my face pets, as usual. So I picked her up to check her out. That’s when I really got worried. She didn’t seem uncomfortable at all – normally if I picked her up, she would seem nervous or stiff, and she might kick before I stabilized her. This time, she just went limp and her head sank into my arm.

Her belly felt normal. Her poops looked normal. Her nose looked normal. She was breathing fine. She just seemed…really tired.

I set her down and she slowly hopped on over to her bed. I made sure she had fresh hay and food and water within easy reach. I kept on checking on her; she drank a little water and ate a little hay. By then it was pretty late, so I went to bed, thinking “Tomorrow morning I’ll get help if she still seems off.” That was a mistake.

I walked out to check on her this morning at about 8. She looked like she was sleeping in her bed, completely normal. But she wasn’t. She was gone.

I just don’t understand. How could it happen that quickly, and without warning? Everything seemed normal up until last night. Did I do something wrong? Should I have rushed her to a 24 hour vet the minute I picked her up and she seemed so tired? Does anyone know what might have happened to her? She was just so young and happy and hyper just yesterday.

I’m trying to get up the courage now to clean up her things. To pick up her toys and pack away the extra food and hay. I hate to let it all sit, but maybe it will have to wait,

Here’s one of the last photos I got. I opened the balcony door for her often, because she liked to sit in the doorway and look out. This was the first snow of the season, last week, and it was early morning so it was still fresh. She sat there and looked out, as usual. She tried sticking one paw in it and she tried licking it. But I think she decided she preferred to sit on the warm carpet and just enjoy the view.

I’m sorry. I don’t have any ideas as to what happened to Louise. But you loved her and she got to do one of the things she really loved to do before she passed.

Sometimes it is impossible to know what happened to our sweet friends, especially when they hide it all so well. I’m so sorry for your loss. She was clearly a sweet and affectionate girl who loved you very much. I’m sorry I can’t be of more help to you at this difficult time but know she felt your care and affection, especially when giving her the chance to look out over her peaceful, snowy kingdom.

I am so sorry for your loss. As prey animals, bunnies can hide illness very well, and by the time they show any symptoms it’s sometimes too late.
Try not to blame it on yourself. You gave her love, and that’s all a bunny really needs.

I’m so sorry to hear about Louise.

It sounds similar to the death of my Checkered Giant Chester. The timing was different as he went to bed OK but was acting strange when I awoke and passed away on the way to the vet.

I wondered at the time if he had been bitten by a spider on the porch where I let him out the night before. More recently I’ve wondered if he ate something bad in the yard/porch and that made him sick?

There’s no sense in blaming yourself. Just try to have faith that you loved your bun as best as anyone could. Hang in there.
