So in the past week, I noticed Winter drinking much more water than usual. She and Licorice both have veggies, but when I got her she’d never had any before so always drank more than him. But lately she’s been drinking a LOT more. I filled up her bottle last night (she plays in water bowls), and by 7 AM it was gone.

The only change I’ve made to her cage last week was adding a hay woven mat (which definitely isn’t it) and a salt lick. She doesn’t use the salt lick excessively, or even often, but does use it some. Could it be that? I don’t know if rabbits are like humans with salt, but salt makes me thirsty…

Also, are salt licks okay? I looked it up before buying and the answers were rather controversial. But it seemed like most people said they were fine.

        Thanks for any help.

Salt blocks are not needed for rabbits. I would remove it.

I too would remove the salt lick. They don’t need it. In any case, remove it now for a while and see if her drinking goes back to normal. If it doesn’t, you’ll need to investigate things further. Excessive drinking is always an observandum if it goes on for more than a few days.

I would say based on the details you gave, the salt lick is definitely what is causing the excessive thirst. I have also noticed personally that my bunny wants to drink more water after a rough or stressful experience, like a car ride or something. But otherwise, I wouldn’t worry about it too much, animals in general are really good about regulating their own systems, but I definitely suggest removing the salt lick to start and see if that helps any.

Salt lick is out. Now I’m just waiting.

You should also check to make sure that the water bottle is not leaking or dripping. They are notorious for doing that. I haven’t used water bottles in a very long time, but I remember that they leaked or dripped excessively at times. Temperature changes in the room, such as when the heat or air conditioning came on, would cause them to drip more.

It’s not dripping – that was the first thing I checked, and I’ve been monitoring it ever since.

The salt lick has been out for 10 hours… nothing yet, still waiting.
