So yesterday, Sterling was sitting in the sun and I noticed he is getting some little dark hairs above his nose. At first, I thought it was dirt but it’s little hairs. Like a little mustache but wrong place.

I posted in one of my FB rabbit groups and some people said that Californians or Californian mixes often get darker hairs when it gets colder. It’s definitely getting colder here. So I always assumed he was Flemmie/NZ but now thinking there must be some Californian in there somewhere.

So my perfectly snow white bunny is no longer 100% white. And I have a yellowish/white Bindi…..lol

Haha, or he’s part snowshoe hare!

It’s looks like it’s right where he has a shed line? It is right where you’d expect border of cali nose markings to be. Interesting!

He obviously has some pigmentation because of his brown eyes. Where as with the REWs, the rew gene hides all the other possible colours that could have been expressed. That’s my limited understanding of it anyway. I reckon BB’s Jack had some faint darker markings. I wonder if she noticed any changes in his coat due to the weather.

Many of the other shaded type coats (like siamese sable) darken seasonally also.

Anyway, it’s very cool! You might spot some on top of his tail too!

If he’s part snowshoe hare he’s doing it backwards….lol…..they should be turning from brown to white now.

Yeah, I’m gonna check his tail. I’m curious. He looks really funny to me like this.

              Don’t eat the yellow snow.

That’s really neat. I haven’t heard of darkening for Winter.

He is the whitest bunny I have ever seen– even with his new color. What a handsome Sterling.

I tried to get a good pic today when it was light out but he would’t hold still. It has spread some. Will try to show you soon.
