So after reading another post regarding bunny vaccines I got to thinking. our vet has never said anything about vaccines and a previous vet said they don’t do them on rabbits so we haven’t thought anything else of it since.

how important are they? do we need to run out and have them both vaccinated immediately?? what kinds are there? We know MrBun has never had any, Daisy came from a pet shop (we don’t have rabbit rescues here) at 8 weeks so I don’t think she has had any either but can’t say for sure.

I’m now worried I’m not a good bunny mommy because I didn’t know about this!!!

MrBun&Daisy, the need for (and the availability of) vaccination depends on your location. In the USA and Canada, there are currently no vaccines for routine vaccination. In Europe and Aussie – yes, you should dash off to your vet and get the bunbuns vaccinated against myxomatosis and RVHD or, in Aussie, just RVHD.

But if you were in Europe or Aussie you’d probably know that.

The reason is that the wild rabbits in the USA are not of the same species as domestic rabbits. Cottontails are not very sensitive to the diseases that kill domestic rabbits, so you don’t have a huge reservoir of lethal bunny viruses in nature (from where they can spread directly and with mosquitos and with predators’ feces).

thank you bam!! yes we are in the USA. Before we got MrBun we asked our dog’s vet ( who can clip rabbits nails but is not a rabbit savvy vet) and he said they don’t vaccinate they only watch for illness. Our bun vet never mentioned it so I just had a mini heart attack thinking our vets didn’t know what they’re talking about!! Thanks for reassuring me
