        Hi guys

Recently the vet gave me Frontline to give to my bunnies for an ear infection. I have just read online that this can be deadly to rabbits, after giving it to them 20 minutes ago. I have washed with a towel, but I dont know if it is enough.

Needless to say I am never going to this vet again but I am scared for my bunnies’ lives. Any advice appreciated, please help or share your experiences. Thank you

        Theo

Call another.vet. Give the buns a bath with shampooing. Lukewarm water, preferably in a wash basin on the floor, a small amount of human schampoo or mild soap. Try to handle the buns very very gently so they don’t panic when they feel the water. It’s best to try and get as much of the frontline off as soon as possible. Then pat them dry with a towel. Make sure they are kept warm. A good vet will probably ask you to bring them in.

Treatment is to stop exposure (hence the bath) and then supportive treatment. Benzodiazepines might help against seizures. Fipronil can penetrate the blood-brain-barrier in bunnies and cause nerve cells to become severely overactive.

This doesn’t happen to all bunnies, there is some type of difference in sensitivity between breeds, but you can’t wait and see.

Omg that’s so horrible!  I hope your bun is ok. Do you know of anyone in your area with buns? – Maybe they can refer a reputable vet.

What age or size are your rabbits?

Sending out {{{vibes}}} that they will be okay. If you are seeing signs that they are not, do get them to a vet and see if they’ll do some IV or Subcutaneous fluids for them. That should help get toxic substance out of their system faster.

Is there anywhere on the packaging or leaflet that says about it being toxic to rabbits. If you can find that, I would be taking that back in to the original vet. You may be able to find it on a msds otherwise.

It says it right on the box, Jersey.

I hope you were able to give your bunny a bath. The Frontline needed to be washed off ASAP. The more you get off, the less that will enter the bloodstream.

Omg I hope they will be okay =( For how much vets cost you’d think they would know something like this. *rolls eyes*

                      Any updates on this?

That’s criminally negligent of that vet. I hope your buns recover. (((((((((bunbuns)))))))))

How awful, I hope you managed to wash it off. Any news on the poor little guy? I agree with Q8 and would be reporting the vet. Everyone makes mistakes, but that is a life or death mistake and not ok.

Guys sorry for the late reply on this one – They are OK! The treatment went fine and I made a huge mistake with the brand. It was a safe brand and they have had no issues. Moderators can delete this thread is need be. Thanks for all your replies!

I’m so glad to hear they are ok and that it was just a mistake! It’s a good thread though, we want to warn as many bun-owners as possible about Fipronil. We had a case a while back where a vet actually did treat a bun with Fipronil. The bun made it but only just. It was in the Philippines.

Thank you for reporting back to us

Phew… so glad to hear it. All’s well that ends well.
