So I finally made it down to the petshop in my area(I havent been since I moved because I brought SO much stuff from home for Yumi and Sampras)
The petshop was swimming with gorgeous baby rabbits. But they also had a ‘special’ adoption section, where an animal shelter displays animals that need homes, which you can buy-they cost half the price of the store ones, and the donation goes to the shelter)

Now I know I cant take any rabbit home while Samp isnt well…but I have fallen head over heels for one particular boy.
He was surrendered with another rabbit, who tormented him-his fur is pulled out, he’s covered in cuts and so so underweight. The shelter separated them immediately as they could see there was something very off with the ‘bond.’ I was tld he’s shy and skittish(but he was happy to pose for a few pics)
I was in the shop for well over an hour and watched as every child, and every grown up skipped past his cage to look at the ‘cute’ buns.
The store foolishly chose to stick him in a cage next to a 16 week old lionhead…(Also surrendered due to things ‘not working out’)

        Absolutely broke my heart.

I’d love to give him a home, but I dunno how my pair would take to having a new cage mate…As far as I have researched trios can often be difficult to get right.

And my brain says “You dont need more heartache…your landlord will throw a hissy fit…you are going to have to take out more loans if something goes wrong and he gets sick..Yumi and Sampras may not accept this new bun”

But then my sappy side thinks…”what if he doesnt get adopted..what if he gets euthanized,  or gets a home that just leave him the garden all alone, wouldn’t it be nice for him to live a life where he’s spoiled and loved to pieces all the time”
One ear up, one ear down !
Here’s a few more pictures of him, plus one of the lionhead he’s next to! http://imgur.com/a/be2Et

HE IS SO CUTE!!! When your bun is feeling better, why not take them in to meet him? If they all get along there, it means they will have a higher/better chance of bonding if you take him home You can also try to advertise him on social media like facebook to help get him some publicity

I know! He’s such a handsome boy. (Don’t tell Sampras I said that)
I’ve checked around, but no-one I know is very interested in having a rabbit.
I’m definitely going to be keeping an eye on him! I mean I will be living in that petshop from now on, what with my paiir eating me out of house and home -I’ll have to drop in and say Hi to the little guy. I think they accept treat and toy donations to the charity…I wonder if I’d be allowed specify that some of them get given directly to him…

That is such a sweet face. God help me

Hmm. Wait till everyone is healthy, and if you have the money, get him! I think you could probably tell them you’re interested but must wait a bit?

What a precious bunny! If you can’t take him, I hope that he will find a wonderful home elsewhere.

He’s precious! We don’t have any shelters for buns in our town but we do go to the pet store almost weekly to just look at the buns. My boyfriend and I will be starting to look for a home in about a year and all we can talk about is how once we have our own home nobody can stop us from bring home more bunnies! The tricky part will be figuring out the bonding since MrBun and Daisy are a bonded pair. So I feel your pain but of course my heart still says bring him home!!!

I’m hoping that the petshop agrees to me maybe buying him a few toys and treats here and there, that they can leave in with him. Seeing him being interactive with his surroundings might help get him adopted(he’s in a rather small enclosure so he doesnt really do much)
I know all my non-bunny friends never really “got” Sampras and Yumi until they saw how hilarious and interactive they were.
Even one of my friends who has a rabbit didnt think they could be anything other than destructive and annoying until she realized how entertaining it was to watch Yumi determinedly moving sticks around so they were EXACTLY as she wanted them.

I know it sounds like a weird plan, but I genuinely think it takes stupid things to make people take a second look at a rabbit, particularly when they are in a room full of baby lionheads, baby lops, baby lionlops etc etc and he’s older and rather ‘plain.’ (My housemate actually went as far as saying he was ugly compared to my two and ‘wouldnt fit in’-I dont like her very much)

I had to buy 50 Christmas présents for kids for several years and I generally tried to coax a friend (any friend!) into coming with me to find semi-decent toys for 10 euros !!
I found that by standing in front of an object and discussing it with said friend “oh what good value, do you think so-and-so would like it, VERY good for 10 euros” that any one in the same aisle looking for a similar present would overhear us, come up take the product off the shelf simply by listening in on our conversation.

                                  SO

I think you should go to the shop, stand by the enclosure and get talking to people walking by who pay a tiny interest in him, engage with them and say how absolutely gorgeous he is….. and what a shaaaame you have a sick bunny at home (sob story!!) and can’t take him until your own bunny is better, but it will be a long road, and what a shame because his geekiness is soooo charming…..

Subconscious brain washing is a powerful tool….

Im sorry to harp on about it, but unfortunately this poor chap is still in the shop.

I plonked myself down in-front of his enclosure and talked to everyone about how gorgeous he was and what great companions rabbits are and THREE people went ahead and told me they wouldnt want a “used” pet.
Two different people came in to buy a rabbit and I tried to convince them to get the older bunnies… but to no avail. *Sigh*
And one woman couldnt figure out what a guinea pig was-she didnt realise they grew up to be larger than the 12 week old babies on display

Before you question it, I know I looked insane. I even felt a bit insane.
I spent 2 hours in the pet shop trying to push adoption on people; I spent so long there I started talking to people about the other pets up for adoption too, telling them about what different pets would suit their lifestyle etc,(Growing up we took in pretty much every type of animal that can come out of a petshop, so Im well acquainted with most small animals-it’s rabbits that are a new concept to me!)
-I was there so long that customers started to think I was an employee and a member of staff came over and told me to stop.

I asked about donating treats, but they told me no(after looking at me like I had a hundred heads and had somehow lost my mind in each of them) – they said that the shelter has them on strict hay and veg diets. I asked why he wasn’t being given any pellets(he’s super thin-I can see his spine through his fur, and not just a little bit, he looks like a hunch back it’s so prominent) they just gave me a shrug.
I remember being told by two separate rabbit vets that I should give increased pellets while Sampras was sick and losing condition, and when I first got Yumi, because she was so scrawny.

I was there so long, the shy guy came over to see if there were any nose rubs on offer.  Alas there was not.

It’s hard to make out but you can kinda see how slim he is here…his fur masks it a lot though!!

Blehhh curse my current unstable situation!

I’m with Vienna, top marks for giving it your best shot. Don’t blame yourself for not being able to take him home, I’m sure there will be someone out there who falls in love with the little guy as much as you have and takes him home. Are there any pet adoption social media pages for your area? Perhaps you could post his photos on one of them?

Haha thanks Vienna! I dunno, there’s three other rabbits for adoption there and oodles of babies, but something about him got to me (he could be a tiny demon for all I know in fairness!) Maybe it’s how pathetic he looks (?)

Odette-I know. The (not so silent) war in my head to just buy him and deal with the aftermath was so strong, if the petshop pushed I would have taken him, but Im moving around a lot at the moment (commuting back and forth from home to college every few days) and I know I cant inflict that on a rabbit in his condition
(Samp and Yumi on the other hand can suck it up) LOL

…maybe my mother would like a gift wrapped bunny… hmmmmm

Do you know what shelter? What if you called them and said you were in the store and, as an experienced owner, are concerned about the weight/health of the sponsored bunnies in the shop, and offered to donate grain/treats through THEM? I don’t know of many rabbits that are on a NO grain diet, maybe it’s a budget/awareness thing. Maybe they’d let you get him a toy or two, and then they’d deal with the shop. If the things you donate never seem to make it to the little guy, now you kinda have a leg to stand on/know what his situation truly is.
