Hey guys. I live in the very cold state of Minnesota. My little sister we learned is allergic to my little Eddie, so we keep him in this fancy garage room we have. My parents don’t wanna pay for the heat to be on in there, so I was wondering what to do instead. Should we buy a little heater to put in his cage or somethings? Please help us I don’t want my little baby to freeze!

How cold does it get in the garage? If it freezes, you must give your bunny warmed water twice a day, because water freezes.

He should have a hutch that’s elevated off the floor or the garage and a section where he can hide and plenty of straw so he can make a “nest” for himself. Bunnies are good at keeping warm, they grow thick fur, but they need a little extra food when it’s cold. It’s good to have a heater that you can use during cold spells. Your parents wouldn’t be willing to consider letting the bun live inside the house during winter?

Could you possibly get a heat lamp or an electric space heater? The heat lamp might be more cost effective to run continuously.

It is possible to have no heater and just make sure the bunny has an enclosed, insulated house/box that they can stay in (not just an open, wire cage).  Their fur plus the heat they give off will keep them warm enough in an insulated box.

The room is separate from the garage and is a carpeted area that is a little warmer than being outside. His cage is on top of a desk right now and we have a blanket wrapped around it at the moment. Sadly because of my sisters allergies my parents won’t let me keep him inside ( I’m just happy they aren’t making me get rid of him). Would it be okay to put a thin heater pad in there even if there’s woodchips? I suppose we could put the heater on top of a elevated platform in his cage. Would he chew the cord though? Thank you so much for the help!

That seems like it would work, I didn’t know they made anything like it. As long as the cord is actually chew-proof it should be fine. I just always worry about these things malfunctioning and getting too hot and/or starting a fire but it looks like it would work in theory.

Just read that cord is specially made for bunnies so it’s chew resistant^^^

It also looks like it’s designed specifically with bunnies in mind.

Meg- I don’t suppose you can give us an idea of how cold it gets in that room in the dead of winter?

Too bad he can’t just come out here like everyone ELSE in Minnesota does in the winter.

Meghan, I’m sorry your sister is allergic =( I’m allergic to cats so I can sympathize. Not fun at all!

It gets really cold here in Sweden as well in the winter, but as long as the bun have a smallish hide where it can make a nest with straw and/or maybe fleece blankies and it gets warm water twice every day, cold is not a huge problem, if it comes on gradually so the bun has time to grow thicker fur before it becomes really, really cold.

I too am wary of bunny-proof cords etc. A determined bunny can chew through a can of coke, they have good teeth. If you could place a heat source where the bun can’t reach it, I think it’d be best. Like a heat-lamp the type you have for baby chickens. Only you must see to it that the bun can get away from the heat source if he likes. Heat is worse for buns than cold, so the bun must be able to choose how much heat it wants.

Hey guys! I just wanted to give you an update update about my little Eddie (sorry I took so long). We put Eddie out in the garage room when it was fall so he’s had time to grow his winter coat. We got the heat pad and he loves it! I find him sitting on top of it all the time. He actually hasn’t chewed the cord at all from what I’ve noticed. Thanks for all the help!
