So I have noticed a bump on Cookies skin a while ago, it was red and looked a little flakey. He was acting completely normal though, so I just waited it out. So today I was grooming him and I noticed two more bumps and the old bump was completely covered in a layer of flakey skin. I don’t really know what it is, but I researched and found a description that matched what I was seeing, it’s called Cheyletiella parasitovorax and its a common rabbit mite problem. The mites are microscopic and are hard to see. I’ve attached some pictures so you guys can see if it could be a mite problem. I keep them inside my house in my room, but recently I’ve taken him out on the grass for a bit. Cream doesn’t seem to have it. I’m planning to take him to the vet but I just wanted your input. Hopefully he will get better!

hmmmm….that looks almost like a scab to me. Similar to when Bindi bit my Sterling. Hard to say from a picture though.

Are your buns bonded? If yes, could they have had a little scuffle?

Actually, I’m doing bonding sessions, so they’re not. I actually thought that could be a possibility. My bunny cream, is always attacking him and last week, he broke out of his cage and they got into a fight when I wasn’t there… but when I came back, there was white fur everywhere.. Which meant Cookie had pulled out more fur?? So I just thought that Cookie was always beating up Cream more. But yes they do fight but not often because they’re separated. It might be, it does look like a scab and it’s just weird that he might have mites because they’re barely outside.

From my knowledge of mites, it’s more like dandruff than something that’s firmly attached to the skin. If you can’t just brush those things off, I suspect they are scabs.

What did you do when your bunnies got scabs? How do you think I should treat it? I’m going to the vet tomorrow, but do you think I should do anything right now?

Nope, just leave them. If they are dry and the skin is not red or inflammed around them just leave them. They will fall off when it’s all healed up.

If they are bites, just monitor the areas until they are completely healed up. Bunny bites have the potential to cause abscesses. My buns were always fine though.
