Hey we have recently brought home an 8 week old lionhead female called Nelly, she is the cutest thing ever ! This is my first time having a lionhead and I was just wondering if there is any tips or tricks to keeping them matt and muck free as there fur is very fluffy.

We have bought her a little brush which we use daily as she is very fluffy and quite long haired so far which looks like its only going to get longer and fluffier, we have also noticed she gets covered in the sawdust as it sticks to her fur like crazy, is there an alternative bedding for these rabbits ?

        Thanks x

you’re doing the best already buy brushing her. you may need to brush her more than once daily when she goes through her shedding phase. as she gets older and more used to the brushing you could try different types of brushes to see if one works better for her. So you’re using sawdust/woodchips for her bedding? do you only use It in her litter box or in multiple areas? you could try a paper bedding- we like it more than anything else we have tried. it would probably be less likely to get into her fur. its also super absorbent. but we only use it in the litter box so I can’t say how it would do as bedding elsewhere. If you are only using it in the litter box you could try a litter screen. that may keep her from being down in the litter.

My girl is very fluffy too, so I keep her on fleece liners and then give her a litter tray with wood pellets in it. This stops anything from sticking to her. Mostly she keeps herself ridiculously clean and unmatted- rabbits groom themselves like cats and are pretty good at keeping themselves in good condition. Do be careful when she’s shedding her coat(Happens about twice a year but it depends on the rabbit) as, unlike cats they cant cough up hairballs, so it can cause blockages. Grooming during shedding is very important (For us too! Everything you own will be covered in fur!)

Yeh we are using sawdust in her cage in her tray and sleeping areas, I shall try the pellets/ paper for her tray.

Can I ask what you mean by fleece liners ?

              Thank you for your help.

I use just fleece blankets, the fleece isnt made of long threads so it doesnt cause tummy problems(Although try to discourage her from eating it)

I use it because I already had loads for hedgehogs and other pets. To me it makes sense because I can wash it when it needs to be washed and reuse it and it works out cheaper than buying wood shavings etc.
                Plus it looks adorable.

And it makes it easy to see if they any unusual bleeding (Although I find that more common in my hedgies than bunnies!)

Just want to ask: what kind of sawdust are you using for her litter? If it’s a softwood, like pine or cedar, you might want to switch to fleece blankies anyways, since the oils in those woods are very toxic to buns.

Its just the basic store bought shavings so I will be switching definatly !

Thank you for your advice x

Woodstove pellets are great for litter, fleece blankets are great for bedding! You definitely need to brush her DAILY as a furball can be fatal for rabbits. Papaya and pineapple are good in small amounts when she is older and can handle eating fruits/veggies. Papaya and pineapple help break down any ingested fur she may have from grooming herself. I bought papaya treats specifically made for small animals but you can use fresh papaya/pineapple, juice, or dried fruit. Just make sure it is small amounts because too much sugar is not good. Other than that good luck and post pictures! I used to have a Lionhead for my first bunny but she passed away in August =(
