So after a whirlwind weekend which started with me putting Tisha to sleep on Friday afternoon, here I am 48 hrs later having purchased an ipad, scrummy perfume and a new bunny !!  (It’s a good job I didn’t pass by a Porsche showroom this weekend!)

Tisha was Zou’s Buddy – not “bonded” but a certain regular animal presence, so when she was no longer with us, it was a no-brainer to ‘just look’ to see what was out there.

I didn’t want to adopt a baby rabbit that had been an impulse buy for some toddler… and there looking out of my computer was ‘Moka’ an 18 month unneutered male from a girl who breeds rabbits but wanted to ‘whittle’ down her buns to just mini-lops which she will show. She was picky about who took her buns and seemed to care for all her buns with great love and affection, so that was a good sign too !

Name : Moka (name to be changed)

        Birthdate 27/3/2015

        Weight today : 3.7kg

        Father – French lop

Mother – Flemmie crossed something else – though I can no flemmie at all except for maybe slightly wider ears

Markings : Injury on left ear after fight with another male a few months back.

His dark orange regal photo made him much grander than he is in real life (he is skinnier and a lighter orange – exactly Kyra’s colour!), although he doesn’t mind being handled or picked up (for too long).

(I think he’s a bit skinny – but he’s next to Zou who is a little on the porky side )

I took Zou with me for a speed date. They were put in a run together and instantly couldn’t care less about the other. A few nose rubs, sniffs and general curiousity – no aggression and shared a willow branch!!

If anybun was asking for anything, Moka was asking to be groomed and Zou was saying “yeah right” and bouncing away. So half an hour later having visited the other (30?) rabbits and 200 pigeons and 30 doves (!) and having said goodbye to the 2 dogs and the goat  (Moxie, I didn’t know you lived in France! ), Moka came home with us in a carrier on the back seat of the car with Zou in another one next to him.

Once home, I left Zou in her carrier whilst Moka checked out the kitchen area, litter box (used straight away, yay!) and nibbled. Zou was watching from the carrier and showed no interest one way or the other.

I (stupdily) wanted to see if they were as cool as they were together, in the kitchen – they calmly bounced around in the same area for about 5-10 mins taking turns at nibbling the willow and using the litterbox, then as I was feeling smug and taking a photo a fight broke out – wow !! Two heavyweights !!  Glad I had the oven gloves at the ready. I don’t know who started, but Moka certainly wanted to finish it – glad I had jeans on !!

So – I have put dog cage in the kitchen area with Moka in it and Zou is in her normal area. I will change this over atleast once a day, to them to get used to each other’s smells and to make Zou understand she now has to share.

A few questions – (oh it is SO much easier to write advise from afar than to do !!)

Moka will be neuteured, that goes without saying. This week I hope.

Should I keep them totally separated until a week after his neuter or can I let them in the same area (now just for 10 mins sessions) with me in there with them, stopping any too close interaction, using my gloves as a barrier.

When I start bonding on neutral ground, and if it’s going well, how will I know when to try in ‘her’ territory again.

Here’s the photo just before they kicked off   (they done several nose nudges before and nothing had come of it)

I’ve just swapped them around so I could weigh Moka (3,7kg), Zou in cage didn’t like that at all, trying to attack him when he approached.

Swapped them back now and Zou’s flopped out next to window, almost sticking her tongue out at him having made it clear to me which way round they should be…..       Think I’ll leave it like that for a while !

Warning – photo spam of speed-dating on neutral territory – for open analysis please. Go.

No scuffles, no nips, no sudden movements – love at first sight (don’t they make a handsome couple)… or so I thought

Also – names so far :

Rocky, Willow and Murphy at the top
Fudge, Jasper, Gibbs, Carter, Casper, Cooper, Marley, Sam

He seems to respond to Moka – so a similar name : 2 syllables and a “ka” at the end could be good….

Rowan. Did you not hear me call his name? It’s Rowan. :p

Oh, what a sweetheart! Zou looks happy.

I like Willow. Rowan works well with his lovely red hair too.

                  Very handsome boy!

Jasper is a good name. Oscar also has the (KA) sound.

                  Other suggestions:
                  Erik (the Viking)
                  Fergus
                  Harry (after Prince Harry)
                  Percy
                  Sebastian

                  I like Rowan too.

So is he home on a trial period or is he yours now?

                  Sorry about the fight.
Maybe the litter box was a trigger? They often can be.

First of all, I’m so sorry about Tisha, I must have overlooked a post about it because I wasn’t aware till just now that you had her pts. It makes more sense now why you started looking for a bond mate for Zou.

Secondly, he’s gorgeous. Love all the pics I think the name Murphy suits him. In regards to bonding and neuter, I would wait until after his neuter before trying anything else, give him time to settle in and give Zou a bit more time to get used to his presence in her space.

                    Congrats!

Darn, you found my secret location. One day I’m gonna come visit you in France (I have a lot of french heritage and I want to sight see!), so beware!

He’s very handsome, and I wish you tons of luck with bonding.

As for names, Willow seems kinda feminine to me… Casper and Rowan are nice…
Here are some more suggestions though:
                        Banner
                        Trojan

And here are some (male) names that end in “Ka”:
                        Anaka (means “without weakness”)
                        Luca/Luka
                        Chaka (means “A great king”)

So let him out for a bit before I let Zou in, then put him back in before I let Zou in, and now Zou’s gone back out, I’ve let him out.
Sounds like a cricket match !

As they’re both still nipping through the bars I shall do this until noballs day.

Barrett’s right – it’s impressive as how their hearts seem to beat so fast (coupled with quick breathing/smelling I suppose) – seems much faster than Zou, but then she’s dark and fat (ter )…

Oh, I forgot he wasn’t neutered. I would wait a month before putting them together at all. It’s more for safety and so it doesn’t hinder bonding later. It took Thor a good month to stop humping my arm, haha. (Well, even now, if I give him a belly rub just right… he tries to mount my arm/ back, so I HOPE he doesn’t have a hidden teste or anything!).

I have seen plenty of times when Patton’s breathing seems ‘normal’ and not especially fast now, but when I first got him home yeah it always seemed really fast. Even when he was stretched out and lounging. Obviously comfortable. I guess getting into a new environment just keeps the heart rate up.

It sounds like Rowan is in the lead now, but may I suggest Lemay? I was considering it for Patton because of its French origins.

Us French Lops gotta stick together!

Also- I saw the pic of you holding him in the October pics thread. He seems to have the same membrane in his eye that I was asking about in the diet/health forum. Do you see it too?

On Patton, I see it in the front half of his eye on both sides. Sometimes it’s barely noticeable, sometimes it covers about %25 of his eyeball. I was wondering if I should be concerned, but maybe this is normal for French Lops? Tell me what you’ve seen and if it sounds the same. Here are the best pics I have of Patton with the membrane visible. (Sometimes it is more noticeable than this)

Buns have a third eyelid. What you’re seeing in Patton is a healthy example of it. It’s more visible in larger buns, obviously.

Pasturella is like a cold, but it doesnt go away as it’s bacterial not viral like ours, and left alone leads to secondary infections and all sorts of other problems.(Paired with a white discharge from his nose and slightly runny nose) best bet is to get him to the vet asap to get it checked, if it is pasturella the sooner treatment starts the better. (It might not be, but vet is always a good place to start!)

Rusty and Pippi both bounced back way quicker than Chelsey, Gina or Jenny. Podge of course never got done, and Mini and Snickers were adopted done.

(red hair obviously inherited from his greatgreatgreatgreatgreatgtgtgtgtgtgt-far-distant-relative Henry the 8th !! – OMG another Henry! It was meant to be !)) – Breeeeeathe !

It’s not unusual (stop singing! ) for this to happen with boys (apparently) and I’m quite happy with him staying overnight if the other option was to bring him home and have an emergency overnight !

Although I knew Diana’s genes would kick in sooner or later He stole my heart when I read that first feature article on his involvement with Sentebale in Lesotho. Been my primary charity every year since. And I have to confess that he also looks damn good in cammo gear playing with tanks and helis and automatic rifles

So I had to go and buy some hay for him !! Then I rushed to the canal to pick some scrummy dandelions, to the willow tree and cut some branches (again) and even sneaked off a raspberry branch from a plant that I know of…..

One is more invasive than the other and pulling the jewels through, if they’re large, would account for the trauma.

The small red dot on the right (his left) is one (empty) sac. It should be the same size on the left !!! So, comparatively it’s huge !

The vet says it should take a couple of weeks to reduce down. Subcutaneal bleeding apparently. Had the tubes not been tied off properly (thus causing the bleeding, I asked her…) he would not have survived. So it’s not that.

It’s the first time this has happened to my vet who’s been operating on buns for 10 years.

I just wish I could do one of those animated things that make the two photos come alive. LOL

Physical dimensions and eating capability are enough to prove that he’s a big boy.

I personally don’t think these pics are too much, because this is sth you read about possibly happening to a neutered boy. I’ve read about a case where there was a hematoma the size of a ping-pong ball (and that bun healed just fine). I remember being nervous about it happening to Bam when he was neutered.

Anitbiotics (Xeden) still for 8 days.

I have come home to a stinky house – HRH Hoover should be renamed as Mister Peepee as he has decided to do it in the 2 corners of his cage which have carpet bits stuck on to the cage tray (so no slippy slippy, thanks Mum !) and of course the litter box is in the other corner (which he uses too!)…. so the carpet is damp and the other areas of the cage are wet too now thanks to his wet & yellow urine stained paws !!

The vets did say last week that ‘my goodness he wees alot !” (I’m guessing that’s because he eats so much too….)

He still eats as if food is going out of fashion (literally jumping on EVERYTHING I give him and eating it so fast and frenetically he makes me dizzy watching him !)

He ate 3 and a half endives yesterday as well as pellets and willow!

I don’t know what it can be called in France. It’s called Axilur here. It can also be called Panacur or SafeGuard. You want the liquid kind. For most worms you give 1-2 doses. It’s broad-spectrum (kills a variety of worms). It’s OTC, so you don’t need a prescription.

All ok. Same size haematoma but not as ‘taught’, so all good. Slowly going down.

An increase of 300g in 10 days…

We (me and vet) are totally putting it down to Henry having insufficient food for most of his life (the breeder where he came from specializes in dwarf lops!) …. Imo he was a skinny bun being able to see and feel his spine and hips. He is filling out nicely now, though…maybe a tad fast…. So we’ll slow down on the pellets….

There is an issue with very clumped fur on his lower back slash bum area. Not dirty. Just clumped.

I’ve tried to comb it out but he’s less than happy and it seems impossible. I asked the vet if she could shave it off and she said that she preferred not to as Henry has exceedingly delicate skin. During the shave for the castration she couldn’t do as much as she wanted as it was damaging his very, very thin skin…. So she suggests to let it grow a bit more then try to get at it then.

But I’m wondering – if it’s like dogs who should be toileted and aren’t – if the fur will just clump even more and more and become painful?

How close is the clump to the actual fur? My neighbour is a groomer and when I got Yumi her fur was a mess, and when I talked to her about it she suggested a round headed scissors(so if there is squirms there is no horrible risk of stabbing) because Yumi had such awful papery skin, which was being damaged by her fur but shaving seemed like a bad idea.

Avoid cutting close to the skin(I know someone who did that-never would I wish to see it done to another rabbit), actually cutting through the clump itself is sometimes enough to make it easy to move -as it’s often a tangle of dead fur anyway.

It doesn’t show much at all…. but touching it feels like dreadlocks probably 5mm-1cm thick… right next to the skin. Not smooth and soft and furry like the rest of him. I wondered if cutting through it would do something… I just don’t want to make it worse…

You could try use a comb to lift the hair from the skin and cut only the edges of the mat on the outside of the comb to loosen the fur(so it’s not a full clump anymore). Then you might be able to detangle what’s left of the mat with a brush or comb, sorry I cant be more helpful on this!

Seems to do the trick.

Less taut hemotoma means less surface pressure as the leaked and clotted blood is slowly being reabsorbed by his body. It can take a very long time. Tell HRH not to lose heart and to please start nibbling on something again… it kills me to see him wasting away like this. Perhaps a leaf of endive?

He has finished both and is now as good as gold…    Henry is NEVER as good as gold.

One time when Effi (dog) was little, she suddenly one evening was so good and just lay there gnawing on a chew-bone and I was thinking what a perfect little angel she really is – until I realized it was NOT a chew-bone she was gnawing on, but a pair of glasses =( So always beware when a notorious mischief-maker suddenly appears harmonious and chill. If he’s not making any mischief right now, it’s because he’s planning to later

Just once Kyra (dog) went MIA at my brothers house. When i went looking she was in the kitchen with the roast chicken (previously cooling on the side) on the floor. Kyra was a rescue dog and when she knew had been ‘naughty’ her ears went back to a position that was physically impossible and cowered, expecting the beating.

Nothing bad has happened. Let me just. Get. This. Away. From your chops!”
