Calling all nerds – which ipad/tablet to buy pls?

OK so I don’t suffer from “shopping therapy” usually – but I think extreme times call for extreme measures…. 

So I’m treating myself to a ipad “slash” tablet.  I’ve still got my perfectly fine (and bulky) laptop so I don’t need ‘removable’ keyboard…

I think to narrow it down quickly and simply I’m going with an “ipad versus Samsung” (as I already have Samsung G3 and like it)

But there are soooo many ipads (ipad “mini” (sounds like ladies’ protection) ipad “air” (sounds like footwear”) etc) and even quite a few Samsungs…. from 200 euros through to 550 euros !!

I’m not a gamer, but want decent speakers & camera. Will be used primarily for surfing, youtube (and any dodgy films I might want to watch off a USB stick !! Q8 ??!!  lol)

Don’t need the huge ipad pro but don’t want one just one size up from my G3.

So any tips / hints / direct “BUY THIS ONE!” advice, I’m very open to discuss !! 

Budget is flexible as I won’t be needing Kyra’s or Tisha’s trust funds anymore

We have the IPad Mini and the IPad Air2

I love them both. The IPad Air2 is mine, but I use the mini when my battery is low.

I suggest the IPad Air.

Cons: Neither the Mini nor the Air have USB ports. There is a lightning to USB camera adapter available for $29 USD, but I’ve never used one. My major holdback is those items tend to mess with batteries and don’t have a high capacity for data. If you were to go that route, make sure the port won’t zap your battery and will handle the data transfer you need.

Pros: Very good video playback and sound. YouTube looks phenomenal on the IPad. Netflix and movies are smooth and crisp. The camera is perfectly fine for a mobile device. Which is to say not awesome, but not awful either. Handles drops well. Very good battery life.

But, if the USB port is something you need, the Apple products are not ideal.

For Samsung, I would go with the Galaxy Tab S2 9.7″. For Apple, I would go with the Ipad Pro 9.7″.

Summary – Both have good screen resolution. Ipad has better camera. Galaxy has slightly better battery life.

iPad Air 2 is flipping fantastic. Great size/weight for effortless holding, wonderfully equipped and functional, great battery life. Only downside? No USB port. But I can transfer files via bluetooth pretty effortlessly.

I love my Sammy phone, but have no experience with their tablets.

The Chewster is sending sympathy nose nudges and wishes kittehs wouldn’t leave their trust funds.

On a cheering note: you can always come over and nick movies from me.

(Is it my imagination, or is there a virtual epidemic of peeps with diet/feeding/pellet related questions lately? Does no one bother to read the tab above as a starting point anymore? :laugh

Good question !  Answer : I’ve absolutely no idea !!  LOL

I’ve used ipads, I can get by. Hate typing emails on the screen, drives me bananas not having a mouse to position the arrow.

I’ve no experience with Samsung tabs but my mate has got one and says its absolutely fine. But she’s over 60 and not tech minded & not fussy so her’s is prob not the best review to listen to.

No USB? Bum – how do you get photos off and on to ipad if you don’t have another bluetooth device ?

That’s why my Mum (when i’m next to her!) always asks me to send her photos onto her email address….. sneaky !

I think it’s mainly the Windows/Acer/Toshiba etc tablets which have full USB ports – there are very few.

I have an older iPad mini – it must be 3 or 4 years old now. I love it and its great for watching netflix etc when you’re alone but if a couple of you are watching a full size iPad may be better.

I would use the cloud online storage to move pics from my phone/laptop to my iPad but I’m an apple person – mac/iphone/ipad lol

Personally speaking, I think the iPad is a better shout than the Samsung tablets – I have a few friends who have them and I wasn’t overly impressed. However, like I said, I’m probably not the best person to ask

Internet or Store Bought? Hmmm…I like to buy at the store because I’m impatient. But if you can get the same warranty and buy the device at a better price, online is good.

I don’t know if it’s the same with tablets as with phones, an IPhone is self-explanatory and really easy to use whereas some android phones can drive you completely mad when you’re trying to figure out how to work them. (I’ve had 2 Sony Xperia. Sony must have decided to drive their customers crazy, because only crazy people would consider buying more than one of their products.)

Agree with Bam, 100%. I find the apple platform much easier to use than an Android – but again if you’re used to an Android phone an android tablet may seem easier to you.

Have you gone into the likes of the apple store/electrical goods store to have a play on a few different types? That might help in your decision

Mine has 64gb and i don’t use it for films – i hook up my film external hard drives to my Viera and watch that way.

But i do like to use it instead of my laptop for everything else like net, email, skype, photos, music…

Wifi only means you can’t put a sim card in it and give it its own mobile data ability- you must use wifi internet or hotspot off of another device

Just found this link (uk site) which simplifies choosing… D’oh for “Wi-Fi only” ! Just means there’s no 4G for out and about surfing… silly me !
But really? I’ve coped without it up til now and I still have my smartfone. Does anyone (normal users, not Pokemon-zombies) use 4G on their tablets ??

So I’m not going to regret getting a wifi only one…? All hotels, homes and work places have wifi now so you’re basically covered… do airports?….
And quite frankly would I die without it…? I don’t think so…

Airports have wifi. Its not always free, but the airport wifi isn’t expensive.

I like the option to use my data plan, but that’s just me. Since you don’t use it on your phone, you are unlikely to need it for your tablet.

Can you type on it without making very very embarrassing spelling mistakes? Why not get a netbook, like a small laptop and you can plug into a TV? You can do all sorts on a netbook, omg can you imagine what people would think if they brought out an ipad maxi , or maybe the ipad discreet?

Haha, VB will probably wish she read that before she went out shopping. I can imagine her asking a sales assistant if there is an iPad discreet.

How about ipad with wings? An ipad with 2 smaller fold-out screens so you can have 3 screens displaying different things all in your line of vision.

I don’t want to play with it too much yet – I turned down the excessive insurance package they offered against dropping it and haven’t got a protective plastic cover nor case yet….

@bam – I bought Kenzo Flowers – a (2 week long) ex bought it as a gift (the 2 weeks happened over my birthday ) a few years ago and I didn’t get it again cos I thought it a bit weird, but hell! I like it… so tthhhpppppp (tongue sticking out making a raspberry in very adult fashion!!)

That looks like an IPad and those babies are hard to crack. They do make accordion covers that let you stand the pad up. I bought mine for around $20 USD off Amazon. You can also buy a keyboard for the IPad, though you do get used to the IPad keyboard.

OMG!!!! I am going BANANAS !! I have just spent 4 hours (3 washloads ) surfing on amazon…. aarrrrgggghhhhhhhh – and I STILL HAVEN’T DECIDED !!! pleeeease heeeeelp meeeeeeeee

– Hard Case with folding cover (good and protects well, but needs to be opened each time),
– Unbreakable bumper (fab if you drop but won’t slide in and out of a bag easily and screen remains unprotected)
– Apple fake – with a folding corrugated front which folds down into a tiny triangle to support it (classy but offers limited protection if dropped!!)
– 360 case which leaves a circle free to show it is an Apple ! Woo ! (the turny thing in the middle can scratch ipad and the apple remains unprotected if carried in a bag!!)

OH FOR GOODNESS SAKE – I bought the wrong one !!!!!! I’ve surfed a thousand ipad air cases this afternoon and I’ve clicked on an “Ipad 4” one not Air2!!!!!

I saw it in time and phewie have cancelled it and bought another (correct) one. Of course, I don’t get free delivery for the one item (correct case) so I had to buy Celine Dion’s new album on CD too !!!

I know I’m late to this party, but I definitely suggest Apple products. I’ve had other products, but I feel like Apple takes better care of their products, and they last longer. I had an HP Netbook which was good, but the thing only lasted a couple of years. I had to buy a new battery for the cost of what I paid for it. No thanks!

I have had two MacBook Pros, an iPad and two iPods. So yeah I definitely recommend Apple products.

Thanks all – I got my cover through the post today – an Apple-cover look-alike – very pink and very sleek . Will slip into any bag for transport….

However, the outside of the corner bits are literrlly 3mm away from the ipad itself – and I doubt very much it would survive a tumble. Not that I’m expecting one… but I’m still a bit nervous about its whereabouts to avoid it being pushed off a table onto the (tile ) floor.

I can work out the little folds in the back of the cover to make the ‘flat’ support thingy, but pretty usless to watch a film on (too flat)….

I wouldn’t be so disappointed if I hadn’t trawled the internet for hours !!! LOL

I have SO little patience when using the ipad to type with (emails. On BB…) – I am now back on my laptop…. it’s such a pleasure to type on a keyboard.

I SO need a crash course in how to use it (words being highlighted in pink, in blue, replacing words I’m typing perfectly with things it thinks I mean instead…)
(Atleast the Samsung mobile phone lets you types wrong words, but offers you options that you can choose (or not))

And THEN I try to tap on a word to insert the cursor in somewhere to change/delete a letter – it turns the whole word pink and doesn’t let me put in the cursor….. Why can’t the ipad have arrows to direct the cursor up down and left….?? (or does it and I haven’t found it yet?)

Yea, you do, but for like 3 secs, and if it’s in the wrong place you have to do it again, rather than just directing smoothly across with an arrow button…

iPhone will substitute the words you write with stupidities. My guess is iPad does that too. Samsung might have better spelling-options but they seem to have a bit of a spontaneous-combustion-problem instead

You should hold your finger on the word where you want to insert the cursor, as Azerane says.

I think the pink only shows on misspelled words. When you see pink, click the backspace arrow to delete. You will need to retype the word, but the cursor should be in the right place.

The keypad takes time and patience…and time. Wine doesn’t hurt.

I’m not sure where it is on iPad but on phones you can turn off a lot of those feature.
Go to Settings ->General->Keyboard.

You can turn off predictive text, spell check and autocorrect.

You can have multiple keyboards also so you can switch between English (UK) and French. You may have already done that.

As Jersey says you can turn off autocorrect etc in settings. I did that and my writing actually got a lot worse. What bugs me the most is that iPhone won’t let me write the names of medicines without changing them. “No alternatives found”. I never asked for any alternatives, now did I??? (Yes, I talk to phones and laptops etc)
You can’t have different languages without sacrificing all the emoticons. Or at least I couldn’t. A globe-symbol-key replaces the emoticon-key.

Stopped by to read this, and want to add a little tip.
I use an iPad Mini daily, even for many of my BB posts on facebook. There is no USB port going IN, but
you insert the charger cord, removed the USB end from the plug, and you have a USB cord going OUT.

So, if you have some pix you’ve taken with your iPad mini and want to put them into your laptop, save them to a cloud or storage space that’s got more room than the mini, just plug it into the usb port on your computer and open like you would a separate drive or disc. Then move it over (don’t copy unless you want to).
I am not sure, but it may even work both ways once you’ve plugged it in. So I think you can add tunes from your computer to your mini’s app for music by moving it over. That’s if you don’t synch it on all your gizmos to begin with. (I don’t, since I need to keep space on the iPad pretty clear and clean.)

Same goes with docs, etc. Emails are already synched for the most part. Clearing out stuff onto a main computer tends to be better back up and keeps the iPad from getting too overloaded with stuff.

How about holding down a letter on an iPad and you should get the various functions related or letters displayed? Looking for the cents symbol? Hold down the $ on the keyboard. For Mac users, it’s Option + 4.

I’d love to know too if there is a “CTRL Z” function to undo error and CTRK Y…..? there is no ‘undo’ arrow option on the keypad….

Once you type something, click the numeric key in the bottom left that reads .?123 and the undo key will appear on that screen in the lower left on the second row.

It doesn’t show until you type something before clicking the numeric key.

To redo, go through the undo process and click the #+= key, you’ll see redo where undo was previously.

I have a non mac laptop with itunes on to which i have copied all my CDs.
I have transferred all these copied CDs from itunes on to my ipod. Clever me !

How do (Can?!) i get my music which is on itunes on my laptop onto my new ipad ?
Is it as simple as plugging it in?

You may have to sit in a pen with it, try reduce the size of pen if there is aggression. Spray it with a jet water if it plays up, or spray yourself just to cool your temper. Or for general amusement.

So do i, i havent done an update yet….

I’m watching with interest for useful suggestions too.

I would imagine it would be same way you did it for transferring onto iPod.
I find Apple devices are pretty intuitive so plugging in may give a pop up menu with all the actions you need. Nothing to lose by trying it.

Oooooo. I’ve discovered the split keyboard and the 2 fingers “virtual keyboard”…..
I KNEW other people can’t have thought the ipad was easy by the way i was using it….

Ok so spent 10 mins with a friend last night who showed me some things…. (update to 10 is a good start and now my keypad sounds as is ifs underwater…. different popping noise for delete and spacebar…..)

Q8 (cos i know you’ve got the same as me) , when you double tap on a word to change it (mine then highlights blue) and there are options of words in the bar just above the keypad, can you replace a word or does it not react atall?
Mine does not accept my choice when I’m touching the word.

It seems it is just on BB, and as i spend so much time on here it seems like it always does it….but on other sites it works fine….

I need to know if it’s just me or other people too, thanks xx
