HI, so I have a 3lb Holland lop and I’m still trying to figure out his diet needs. I have Timothy hay which he has unlimited amounts of. I also have commercial pellets which he gets about a tablespoon and a half of a day now (he’s only 6 months and recently tapered it off).

I’ve seen Timothy hay pellets and I was wondering what the rules were for those. I know it’s recommended to limit regular pellets but do those rules apply to pellets that are 100% Timothy hay? Could I feed him some Timothy pellets along with his regular pellets and his normal Timothy hay?

Also what brands of regular pellets do you guys use? I know pellets are mostly for vitamins and nutrient needs but I’m not entirely sure what to look for in ingredients to know what is good and what isn’t.

Most pellets are timothy hay based, but any pellet that is only 100% timothy hay with nothing else added, is merely just ground and compressed hay and doesn’t really serve much of a purpose except perhaps for concentrated fibre, which he should get plenty of from his hay anyway. If they’re only hay and nothing else, I probably wouldn’t bother. The point of pellets is not only for fibre, but for the other essential nutrients which they may miss out on if they’re not getting the correct amount or variety of leafy greens.

Depending on what country you live in, this chart may or may not do you any good but it shows generally what guaranteed analysis to look for and what ingredients: http://www.therabbithouse.com/diet/rabbit-food-comparison.asp I have personally used both Oxbow Essentials, and Burgess Excel. I switched to Burgess because my previous rabbit didn’t tolerate the oxbow too well.
