We are looking to adopt a second bun, the adoption place we’re speaking with just got in about 10 new bunnies that will be getting spayed and neutered.  Some of the surgeries are happening today, and some next week.

After surgery for these rabbits, how long should we wait before we bring Gizmo there to introduce her to them and do a speed dating session?  Is 2 weeks enough?  Our current rabbit is spayed, so I don’t worry about the males still being fertile (I have read they can be for a bit after surgery) I’m wondering more on a hormonal level how long we should wait to set up the bunny dates to see which would be a good fit for Gizmo to bring home and try to bond with.

        Thanks!

I’d wait 3-4 weeks, because a newly desexed bunny can become quite hormonally confused for a while after the procedure. Their true personality doesn’t really show itself until after some time has passed.

So to create the most favorable bonding-conditions, it’s wise to wait a bit (even if it’s hard not to feel very impatient).

Should it be 3-4 weeks regardless if the rabbit is male or female?  Thanks.

Yep, I’d follow bam’s advice. For both sexes. It makes the waiting even more exciting !

How can it affect bonding if we’re in that gray area after surgery where we aren’t sure if hormones have settled down or not?

We’ll be driving a full day to do this bunny date based on our location so trying to plan ahead.

Because of the shelter’s spaying/neutering schedule, our availability to make the day trip, and what rabbits they have available, we can meet rabbits that will be at different times after surgery. Some rabbits 6+ weeks after their surgery (I know we can meet with them for sure), some will be 4 weeks after, and some 2 weeks after.

Is it okay to meet the rabbits that are only 2 weeks from surgery when we go to meet them with Gizmo?

We do plan on pre-bonding when we get home, for about 2 weeks, where rabbits are kept in their own cages, in close proximity to each other, not sure if that make a difference, to allow extra healing/hormonal settle-down time.

                Thanks!

As a rule, it takes a good deal longer for a girl rabbit’s hormones to settle than for a boy’s. A boy can be “ready” after 2 weeks, but there are big differences between individuals.

The problem with trying to bond a rabbit with a newly de-sexed rabbit is primarily heightened aggression and territoriality in the newly de-sexed bun. Perhaps also a sense if vulnerability post-surgery. A girl rabbit should not meet other rabbits for a minimum of 2 weeks post spay, because that’s how long her wound needs to heal.
Aggression and territoriality of course means fighting is likely to break out, and two buns who have been in a real fight can be more or less impossible to bond. Rabbits have surprisingly long memories.

Most of the rabbits we’re going to ‘date’ will be males, as Gizmo is female and I’ve heard female+male bonds can be easier.

The males will all be at least 2 weeks post surgery, and of course one of the bunnies we’re really interested in will be one of the 2 weeks post-surgery rabbits.  Although I know Gizmo will have the final say in what rabbit we take home
