The reason I ask is because some days Dorothy’s poop is small, dark and misshapen. Some days her poop is normal size. I wonder if there is one thing that is screwing her digestive system up, or if she is just choosing to eat less hay that day?

Dorothy’s diet is a combination of suggestions from her vet and the shelter where we adopted her from:

-Unlimited western Timothy Hay from Oxbow (and some 1st cut from Small pet select)

-3 total cups of salad (Romaine lettuce, cilantro and parsley). She gets 1 1/2 cups at breakfast and 1 1/2 cups for dinner.

-1 treat (Digestive support vitamin) or some days she gets 1 treat and 1 baby carrot (1 baby carrot every 2 days)

        -Unlimited water

It sounds likely that she isn’t eating quite as much hay as she ought to. You can give her other types of hay as well as Western timothy and the small pet select. You can f ex try orchard, botanical or oat hay (Oxbow carries those types of hay, but you can often buy flakes of hay from local horse-stables). Rabbits like variation, and variation is healthy because all grass hays have some small differences between them nutrition-wise.

Since you don’t feed any pellets, she needs a good variety of fresh greens, and it sounds like she’s getting that.

Oh right, I forgot to mention I give her botanical hay sometimes too. She doesn’t like orchard grass, but I have been planning on trying oat hay for her sometime. I figured it was just her being picky and choosing to not eat as much hay and just waiting for her greens!

My Bam will avoid hay if he thinks there’s a possibilty of getting something yummier. If you have access to apple trees or willow, you can give him twigs, with ir without leaves. Gnawing the bark off is often a very popular activity, good for both the teeth and the tummy.

Do you notice the change in poop associated with any particular day, in terms of the day you give the baby carrot or the treat? Perhaps her stomach doesn’t quite agree with one of the greens you are feeding, and she can mostly tolerate it, but it causes some poop changes. Do you ever feed other types, or just those three?

Has her poop always changed like this or only recently? Perhaps she is shedding. Do you top up her hay every day? Or does she have a big hay rack that lasts several days?

It only recently changed like this, I believe she is shedding more and probably eating some of her fur. I top up her hay every day, but recently my boyfriend and I have been trying to be more on top of giving her enough hay as soon as she’s done with it. We give her first cut as part of her bedding along with the 2nd cut, so we’ve been trying to make sure we are on top of filling the 2nd cut as soon as she’s done with it. It seems to vary day by day no matter what she is being fed, so I believe this is most like a shedding issue..
