I’ve had Oswald (my netherland dwarf) since he was almost one year old. I know that bunny nails are constantly growing and that long nails are a health hazard. I tried to trim his nails once (using the press-press-clip method), but it didn’t go well. I only got a few millimeters off each nail for 3 paws (both of us were too shaky to continue), but it seemed like the nail itself was twisting and hurting him whenever I tried to close the clippers. It’s been almost a year since and his nails barely stretch past his fur (if at all). Is this normal? Or am I missing something? There are no vets/stores near me that will do his nails or answer my bunny questions, so it’s all on me.

I only know with dogs and horses, but I’m assuming the same applies to bunnies. The growth rate of nails is influenced by genetics, diet, wear (and with horses, humidity).

That means it varies between individuals and the variance can be considerable.

I think my rabbit, Luke, bites his own nails short! There is never much to trim, and his nails are black and very curved, so I have cut the quick nearly every time I attempt a trim ?. I’m just filing them from now on, unless they look long enough to cut.
