Yumi ate virginia creeper leaves approximately half an hour ago(She was being minded by a friend while I was out at the shops). The closest vet wont see her for at least 2 hours and Im medically unfit to drive and there is no buses running today. Ive been ringing taxi companies to no avail-they wont take animals

The leaves came off the neighbours tree and collected in a pocket of the garden I failed to check-we have a non toxic garden due to cats dogs and hens and I never noticed the fallen leaves.

How toxic are the leaves? I know the berries and sap are dangerous

How much did she eat do you know? everything says berries and sap but I can’t find anything on the leaves. I’m hoping that means the leaves aren’t extremely bad. is she eating normally and acting normally right now? the only thing I can think of is lots of water and hay to keep it from being the only thing In her stomach but hopefully i’ll help attract some attention to your post!

            Thanks for the reply!
I couldnt tell you how much she ate, she goes from dainty nibbler to vacum cleaner depending on how she feels about the food she’s found..
I gave her vitamin E and some activated charcoal.
She’s happily eating all around her(fresh greens mostly), there’s no sign of discoloration of her gums or mucous membranes and her breathing appears normal.
Her cage mate is currently grooming her and she’s tooth purring away.

that’s great! and I would have never thought about the vitamin e and charcoal! so you’ve helped me add to my first aid kit! I’ve always heard it wouldn’t take long for you to notice if they were having a problem so it sounds like she’s in the clear! Wouldn’t it be nice if every thing poisonous had a bad taste that would deter them from eating it!

The vitamin E and activated charcoal were brilliant. I am adding those to my first aid kit too.

I’m late seeing this, but very happy Yumi is munching happily and doing fine.

So just an update: it’s been 8 hours since Yumi ate something, and she’s back to destroying her cage and harassing me for her treats, with no visible side effects at all.
                    Hopefully in the clear!

Apparently she’s dealt with this whole thing far better than I did….! (It’s 2 in the morning here and I havent left her cageside)

I’m not too familiar with what’s in virginia creeper, but I know some toxins denature when plant material dries out. Perhaps what she ate was a very, very small dose.
